Serial port on virtual machine

$

Hi everyone!

I've a PBX that I need to monitor through serial port with a software inside a virtual machine.

The virtual machine is inside a cluster made of 3 ESXi 5 hosts.

When I create the serial port on the virtual machine settings, I choose "Use physical serial port on the host".

Then I physically connect the serial port on the host where the virtual machine runs.

What happens when the virtual machine, due to vMotion or manual host changing, runs on another hosts?

How can I set the VM to connect the serial port on the specified host where I physically connected the serial cable?

Thanks,

Piero

OVA Template Export and Import - Looses IP Settings?

Hi,

Does anybody know when I export a OVF template from the VShphere client as a single file and then bring it back it never seems to remember the TCP/IP and network settings.

It seems that all of this is lost when I bring import the image back in.

The other thing I notice is that I always have to upgrade the Virtual hardware as well after importing.

Thanks,

ESXi & Storage Server 2012 - Slow NFS Writes, but Reads are fine?

$

Hello all,

I have a Virtual Storage Server 2012 joined to a domain inside my ESXi Host. I have 4 x 1TB in RDM Configuration attached to the storage server. Within Storage Server I have created 2 NFS shares - One for ISO's, the other to store my VM Templates. I have added the 2 NFS shares to the ESXi host and it all looks great. That is until I try to write to the shares.

I was able to install a Win7 VM from one of the ISO files within the NFS share at a very good rate. Reading the share seems to be absolutely fine as the VM was built and ready in reasonable time, however when I try to create Templates of VM's to be transferred into the Templates NFS Share, I get about 3MB throughput and around 750mins estimated completion time from ESXi which is obviously not good.

Any ideas what I am doing wrong? Before running Storage Server 2012 I was using FreeNas, and had a similar issue. So something within the ESXi host needs changing maybe?

Any ideas?

TIA.

VMware Player 5.0.1 in ESXi5 VM - Bridged network issue

$

Hi community,

I have the strange situation that I have to run the Player in a VM that is running on ESXi 5.0. Please don't ask why I just have to deal with this situation for now, no alternatives at the moment

The VM is also set up properly so that VMs run fine on the Player, except for one thing: The bridged networking is not working, From the Player VM I can ping the ESXi VM and vice versa, however from the Player VM I can't reach anything else.

I also did a check with vmnetcfg.exe and the correct vNIC on the ESXi VM is selected. There are also no VLANs that could interfere, so I'm a little bit lost what could be the issue here.

General question is, is it even possible to do this properly in my current scenario? I can't use NAT since the Player VMs require their own IP to be visible to the physical network. Is there any way how to fix this?

Thanks a lot in advance

Best regards

Inventory/Tracking

Hello-

I manage about 500 vms spread out between a few different clusters.  For billing purposes we charge customers based on a formula of assigned vRAM, vCPU and storage= monthly fee for your vm.  Every year I end up having to export my vm list into an excel spread sheet and assign the correct monthly charge to each vm based on the above formula.  I then send this list up to finance.  Manual process is driving me crazy.  I have looked at vm chargeback but don't like the complexity of the product for what I am trying to achieve.  Basically just want a single repository of my vms that I can add personal info to like what department owns it, chargeback codes to use for billing and monthly costs.  From this single repository I want to be able to export the data and send it to finance.  Looking to get away from spreadsheets on a network share.  Any thoughts?  I was hoping there would be an easy to use appliance I could download, but haven't found it.

Thanks,

Erik

Permission Denied during firmware upgrade

Hello,

I have a HP DL360p Gen8 server with a Smart Array P420i controller.

I'm getting a warning message in ESXi 5.0 under the hardware status of the array controller.

I'd like to upgrade the firmware of the controller and the instructions say to do the following steps.

  1. Log into ESXi 5.0
  2. Enable ESXi Shell
  3. Enable  SSH
  4. Restart the management agaents
  5. Copy the firmware file (CP030321.scexe) to a temp direct
  6. So i copied the file to the ESXi 5.0 host /tmp
  7. Logged into the ESXi 5.0 host as root
  8. cd /tmp
  9. and typed ./Cp030321.scexe to run the file
  10. But i get "Permission Denied"

Does anyone now why i would get permissioned denied message when i'm logged in as root?

Or maybe you know another way i can upgrade the firmware for the array controller.

Thanks

Extending a Datastore without using Extents. is it possible?..

We have setup multiple datastores, once they are near full, we extend the size of the LUN on the SAN, however VMware doesn't see the expanded size, is this NOT supported?

Our Setup is like this:

OS_1 Datastore  1.5 TB on SAN

OS_2 Datastore  1.5 TB on SAN

APP1 Datastore  2.0 TB on SAN

APP2 Datastore  2.0 TB on SAN

DB1 Datastore 2.0 TB on SAN

DBBAK Datastore 2.0 TB on iscsi

with this setup, I want to expand the OS and APP datastores when they get near full rather then make more datastores, confusing some of the other admins.

     Hi all,

vmware ESXi 5.1

I have mistakenly deleted files for a guest OS and only kept what I thought was required.

this where snapshots but where consolidated (im 95% sure) before this happened.

The only files I have left are , the mvdk descriptor, the vmx and the xxx-000003-delta.vmdk which is 18Gb.

How can I extract the contents of the delta file?

Thanks

Change vsphere health warnings?

I have an IBM 3690 server. It has a powersupply module that can take 4 canisters, however we only have 2 installed(and we only plan to keep 2 installed). Is there a way for vpshere to turn off the warning about PSU 3 & 4?

I use PRTG to monitor the servers for warning/failures, and having the server always yellow is becoming a little backwards. PRTG only reports what vsphere gives out, so I have to change the alert level on the host.

Any ideas?

iSCSI Problems in ESXi 5.1

$

I'm trying to get iSCSI working with my home lab setup.

I'm running FreeNAS 8.3.0-Release with iSCSI running on top of ZFS.  My datastore consists of two 1TB SATA drives in a striped zdev.  I have created 6 vdevs on this and am sharing one for each vm that I plan to host on the ESXi host.  I've had this setup once successfully, but in testing it was torn down and rebuilt several times.  I now cannot get the iSCSI link to work reliably.

The network consists of one cisco 3750G switch.  It's configured for L2 only and the vlan setup for iSCSI is only configured on two ports (one for ESXi and the other for FreeNAS).  The two servers are both running intel e1000 nics that are dedicated for iSCSI traffic, and FreeNAS, ESXi and the switch are configured for jumbo frames.

Currently, my switch interface is dropping out serveral times a minute on the ESXi interface.  Because of this, it's throwing "istgt_iscsi.c:5239:worker: ***ERROR*** iscsi_read_pdu() failed" errors on the FreeNAS box.  It has done the same thing before moving iSCSI traffic to it's own NICs, as well as before setting up jumbo frames and upgrading the ESXi box to 5.1.

If I've left any important info out, please let me know.  If anyone has ideas of what to check, I'd love to hear them.

Thanks

I can not clone my VM

Hi,

I am very new to the world of VMware. I setup a host, installed ESxi 5.1, and then from a second PC connected to my host using VM client.

Then installed server2008 and now I want to clone this VM so that I can create a virtual network in order to practice for my Microsoft exam. The help files suggest that I can right click on the VM and select clone. The problem is, I do NOT have this option when I right click, so what am I supposed to do? any idea anyone please.

Many thanks for your help in advance.

Enhanced SpeedStep and BIOS support

I would like to implement some CPU frequency scaling on a prospective server that I intend to build.

My question is this: For the power management features in ESXi5 - is it necessary for BIOS support for frequency scaling? I know the CPU obviously must support it but ESS boards have a separate feature for selecting a power saving profile within the BIOS - is it necessary to have this support in the BIOS too?

I only intend to use the power management features within ESXi.

Thanks.

MAC Address Variation

Hi Team,

I am quite new to the technology of VMware. I would appreciate any feedback.

I came across a situation where i found that the Vsphere was showing a different MAC address for the NICs from whats physically found. I guess thats the reason why it says VNics.

The Above screenshot shows CIMC (of a Cisco UCS server) on the right the VMware Client of the same host.

Q1) why is there a variation?

Q2) How can i find the real MAC address on the Vshpere Client using GUI or CLI?

PPPoE suddenly stops working in guest OS

I'm running pfSense on ESXi. My modem is bridged with the vSwitch that pfSense is on. Most of the time everything works fine but if I reboot the ESXi host then my PPPoE no longer connects. It will refuse to connect for several hours. No amount of rebooting can get it working again. The log shows the following:

May 30 11:27:24    ppp: [wan_link0] Link: reconnection attempt 97

May 30 11:27:24    ppp: [wan_link0] PPPoE: Connecting to ''

May 30 11:27:33    ppp: [wan_link0] PPPoE connection timeout after 9 seconds

May 30 11:27:33    ppp: [wan_link0] Link: DOWN event

May 30 11:27:33    ppp: [wan_link0] LCP: Down event

May 30 11:27:33    ppp: [wan_link0] Link: reconnection attempt 98 in 2 seconds

May 30 11:27:35    ppp: [wan_link0] Link: reconnection attempt 98

May 30 11:27:35    ppp: [wan_link0] PPPoE: Connecting to ''

May 30 11:27:44    ppp: [wan_link0] PPPoE connection timeout after 9 seconds

May 30 11:27:44    ppp: [wan_link0] Link: DOWN event

May 30 11:27:44    ppp: [wan_link0] LCP: Down event

May 30 11:27:44    ppp: [wan_link0] Link: reconnection attempt 99 in 4 seconds

During this time I am able to successfully connect from my desktop PC by creating a PPPoE connection in Windows, so it's not a problem with the ISP/modem. I am also unable to connect from other Windows VMs running on the same ESXi host (they just say Eror 651) so it looks like some kind of problem with ESXi not passing through PPPoE properly.

Has anyone experienced this and found a solution?

EDIT:

I used Wireshark with a PPPoED filter to comare the packets from ESXi and my (working) desktop PC. The PADI packets from ESXi (both pfSense and Windows VMs dialing PPPoE) have incorrect payload lengths. There are 20 extra bytes padded at the end of the frame.

can't access iSCSI target from second ESX box

$

I have successfully connected to an iSCSI target running on Windows Server 2012 from one ESX 5.1 box and created a datastore. Unfortnately, I can't get a second ESX 5.1 box to connect to the same iSCSI target. I have added the IP address of both ESX boxes as acceptable initiators for the Server 2012 target.

I have also successfully configured the iSCSI software adapter on the second ESX box to point to the target. It even found the IP address with a dynamic discovery.

Unfortunately, even after I set all this up I can't "Add Storage" under the "Storage" option in the Configuration tab for the ESX box. When I choose "Add Storage" no targets show up to choose from.

Is this simply a limit of ESX boxes, which only permits one ESX initiator per iSCSI target?

For what it's worth, I am using vCenter to manage my ESX boxes.
