'VssSyncStart' operation failed: IDispatch error #8449 (0x80042301)

Hi guys,

I've been attempting to perform an online backup of our VM however continue to receive the above error. After looking this up in the knowledgebase, it states that the issue is either related to excesive I/O or 0 VM space.

Backups did work fine for us until a few weeks ago where VM space may have been an issue. Since then there's now sufficient VM space and the VM resides on a disk with double the I/O capabilities, showing no signs of maxing out, however I'm still unable to take a snapshot whilst the the VM is running.

I've tried the two major solutions of a reboot and a VM Tools reinstall and am out of ideas.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Cheers

VMware Tools Performance Issues

Hello,

We have a VMware Cluster with 11 ESXi 5.1 nodes. In our infrastructure, we have vCenter with Update Manager plugin installed. Two weeks ago we migrated 90 VMs from VMware Cluster 4.1 to the new one (5.1). We import the VMs, upgrade virtual Hardware and Tools with Update Manager. Everything worked fine.

These VMs have Windows Server 2003 SP2 and Citrix.

After users started to log on, they told us that performance of these machines was terrible. When these VMs were in VMware Cluster 4.1 performance was correct. We reviewed them and we found a very high level use of CPU (90 % all the time). We decided to reinstall the VMware Tools, but with interactive installation way. After this one finished, CPU usage decrease to 60 % or even less. We decided to reinstall tools in the rest of the machines, and their performance was correct.

We tried to reinstall VMware tools from Powercli command Update-Tools -VM and from Update Manager again but CPU Usage was high. Only interactive installation fixed the performance issues.

Does anybody have found this issue?

It seems VMware Tools installation process from Update Manager or Powercli missing something.

Thanks in advance.

Best regards.

Using EqualLogic and MD3200i on same iSCSI network

We have an existing MD3200i configured with two Dell Powerconnect 5424 switches. Each switch is isolated on its own subnet. We are putting in an EqualLogic, and Dell recommends configuring both switches on a single subnet (stacked or LAG/trunk between the switches).

The EqualLogic will be our primary storage, so we will configure the switches the EqualLogic way, and then add the MD3200i back.

We only have 3 ESXi hosts. What's the best approach to allow both storage arrays to be accessible to our ESXi hosts?

NFS Thin Provisioning becomes thick after creation

Hi,

We use a Windows Server 2012 Storage Server as our SAN and NAS system. Works perfectly, even with NFS on Windows.

Our NFS-LUN is a LUN we keep our templates on for VMs.

When we create VMs on the NFS-LUN, the wizard only let's you choose for Thin Provisioning, which is normal and good since we only use the datastore for templates.

However: the second after they are created we look at the settings of the VM and it says Eager Zeroed Thick Provisioned.

This is confirmed when we look at the NAS-side, the NFS export only shows vmdk-files of their full size ...

Can anyone shed a light please?

Extra (has nothing to do with the question above): is there a VAAI plugin for Windows Server as a SAN?

Thanks in advance

Re: Auto Deploy vSphere ESXi 5.1

Chances are the host is using info cached on the Auto Deploy server.  You need to update the cache.

To check if the current host setup matches the cache run the following:

PowerCLI C:\> Test-DeployRuleSetCompliance<name of host>

If the host shows non-compliant you can run:

PowerCLI C:\> Apply-ESXImageProfile "Test" "<name of host>"

This should update the cache and allow the host to boot.

Compact virtual disk while running

Hello all,

I use ESXi 5.1 with an external storage array (HP P2000 G3). One of the guests has grown very much. It was created with an 1TB thin-provisioned disk. At the moment the actual data is about 300GB, but the data occupied (according to the Backup software exceed 700gb). As expected, this results in slower full backup time. I was wondering if I can compact the disk without shutting down the guest. Any help would be great.

Thank you

Problems with disappearing hosts in a cluster.

I have what appears to be a networking issue, but our network guys and VMware haven't been any help. Maybe somebody here has seen this.

Background:

We have 4 ESX 5i clusters totaling about 30 hosts. We moved one of the clusters to a new building and within a day, the hosts started getting disconnected from vCenter. Rebooting fixed the problem for a while and then it started to come back. The hosts drop out one at a time and we lose the ability to communicate with them from vCenter. vCenter can talk to everything else on that subnet and everything on that subnet can talk to vCenter. After looking at the routing, we found that the traceroute changes over time.

The first route looks like

10.5.5.1     (Default router)

10.5.5.251 (MPLS gateway)

192.1.1.1   (Remote firewall)

192.1.1.5   (Destination)

and works fine. After a short time, it changes:

10.5.5.251 (MPLS gateway)

192.1.1.1   (Remote firewall)

192.1.1.5   (Destination)

It still works, but not it's no longer hitting the default router. Then, at some point days or weeks later, it changes again:

10.5.5.254 (Firewall)

10.5.5.251 (MPLS gateway)

192.1.1.1   (Remote firewall)

192.1.1.5   (Destination)

At that point, we lose connectivity. I can ping and hit any port on vCenter from the ESX host, but not vice versa. Rebooting fixes it.

Has anybody ever seen anything like this? Cisco points to VMware as the problem and VMware points to Cisco. Maybe the community can be of more help.

Thanks

VT-d support on desktop motherboard

$

Hey. Just wondering if the Intel DQ77MKmotherboard has Directed I/O support with ESXi5.x?

The ESXI hardware compatibility list just mentions server boards and not desktop boards - for obvious reasons.

My intention is to passthrough a PCIe NIC expansion card and two on-board NICs

I have absolutely no experience with virtualization but I have read up a lot over the past week so feel free to hit me with anything you feel I should know. This is just a personal project - not a production server.

Although the first page does not say that the board supports VT-d but the following states that the Q77 chipset, and that board in particular, does.

Compatibility list: Desktop Boards Compatibility with Intel Virtualization Technology (Intel VT)

I just thought I'd stop by here and run this by you guys to see what you think. The CPU I intend to use is either the i5-3470T or the i5-3570T.

Also - are there any special requirements for the PCI devices themselves?

Thanks!

vicfg-hostops clarification

I need further explanation on what exactly vicfg-hostops --operation shutdown --force does.  All I've been able to gather is what I've read in the documentation "if the host is not in maintenance mode, use --force to shut down the host and all running virtual machines".

I'm trying to put together a few commands that can be triggered by a UPS loss of power event to shutdown the host gracefully and when powered back up still have the normal automatic startup of my VMs.  Assuming all my VMs have been gracefully shutdown, what are the negatives to running vicfg-hostops shutdown --force as far as the host itself goes?

Automatic Shutdown of virutal host

$

Hi all,

after we had successfully converted a Win2003 server onto a ESXi 5.1.0 Server, the host automatically restarts after the OS was loaded.

You can see the Windows Logon Screen for about 20 seconds, and then the machine restarts.

I have tried to read the logs, but to be honest - I couldn´t find anything obvious

The guest System is a HP DL 380 Gen8 Server. There is a manual installed Win2008 Server installation, which works fine.

Many thanks in advance

How can I passthrough PCI devices that are not listed?

Hi all,

I want to passthrough my on-board sound card to a VM, but the sound card does not show up in the list of PCI devices.

Is it possible to add devices to the list?

I also would like to passthrough on USB controller that is also not showing up.

My hardware is Gigabyte MB 990FXA-UD3 with a FX-8120.

I succefully passed through 2 AMD Radeon video cards to 2 diferent VMs.

Thanks

unable to start or delete VMs

$

Some of the VMs on several of my ESXi 5.1 server are starting to fail. They give errors about not being able to use the file system when I try and start them. Worse, I can't even delete these VMs and get a "general system" error when I attempt to remove them (see error message details below).

Does anyone have any suggestions about what I can do to resolve these issues? I find it hard to believe that this is from disks going bad since this is happening on more than one ESXi host which are using different storage devices.

Is there a way to delete these VMs? I have tried placing the ESXi host into maintenance mode but that doesn't help. I still get errors trying to delete files from the datastore.

Here is the error I get when trying to start a failed VM:

Here is the error I see when trying to delete a failed VM:

Plan for creating new VM with 3 TB data drive

$

We have an old server we're needing to virtualize, and one thing we need is a lot more storage. We have around 3.25 TB available for this machine (250 GB for OS and 3 TB for Data drives), but I'm going around in circles trying to figure out the best approach for this server. It's not feasible to split the data between multiple drives because of the way the files are indexed. I've created one VM with 2 TB drive space (for the OS and Data drives) and added 1.25 TB drive space that I'd like to add to the Data drive, but it doesn't seem possible to add the 1.25 TB without destroying the data on the first 2 TB drive. What is the best approach? Create a single drive for my VM that's 250 GB, and then add in two separate 1.5 TB drives for storage and combine them within Windows?

Thanks for your suggestions.

Problem with Promise vTrak e610f (NMP errors)

I've been running an ESXi 4 server connected to a Promise vTrak E610f SANS connected via fiber channel and was running fine

After the upgrade to ESXi 5 I've been having problems with my logs filling up with this:

I've been experimenting with it the last few days and this is the only storage server I'm having a problem with (tried it with two Sun x4500 servers that are serving drives over FC with COMSTAR). However, no other computer is having a problem with the vTrak, only VMWare.

I only get the above errors when writing to the datastore, not reading.

If I pass the disk through to a virtual machine as a raw disk I can read and write to it without any errors and nothing in my vmkernel.log file.

I've tried combinations of different controllers and cards and pathing options. I've changed several settings on the vTrak with no effect. I've updated the firmware in my FC cards with no change.

I've read posts from others with similar error messages, but haven't been able to resolve it.

The vTrak is running the latest firmware available, too.

Any thoughts?

Mac OS 10.8 guest VM on ESXi 5.1 - hangs after installation

On ESXi 5.1, I created a new VM and choose Apple 7.1 x64, then connected DVD to Mac OS 10.8 installation package, then followed KB (VMware Documentation for OS X 10.8) to install it. The installation process completed, then it should reboot to a configure administrator/password page, but it hangs there with a grey apple screen. The phenomenon is quite the same with (Mac OS X 8 (Mountain Lion) guest on Mac Mini ESXi - stuck at gray boot screen.), but I didn't understand the resolution, please indicate me how should I do. Thanks!

Silly...adding guest OS versions

Pretty new to VMware here, and I've got a silly one...

I need to add a few additional guest OS types, I currently only have the Windows flavors available. How does one accomplish this?

Thanks in advance!

a 2-node cluster

Hi.

I vaguely recall seeing somewhere the limitation list for clustering vsphere hosts, which basically came down to vmotion limitations.

By that I mean that it was a document describing how two hosts have to match and differences they can afford to have.

I'd greatly appreciate it if someone point me towards that info.

Also, am I right to assume that a cluster configuration is quite workable without a shared datastore?

How much of a performance hit is involved in refraining from it (MS SQL usage scenario)?

Wouldn't shared storage mean a single point of failure, kind of defeating the idea of clustering?

Thank you so much for your answers.

Alex.

40GBE Mellanox Adapters

$

I added a 40GBE Mellanox connect-x3 Adapter  to each of my esxi hosts (5.1 u1). The adapters were not immediately available. I searched vmware and mellanox's site and found driver 1.61. The driver installed fine and i can now use the cards but they are only listed as 10gbe and seem to only be linking up at 10gbe. The site specifically lists them as 10gbe so I am wondering is there a newer driver somewhere, and were they supposed to be supported by esxi 5.1u1 right out of the box and maybe adding them after the fact is my issue? Mellanox does not list a 40gbe vmware driver on their site, yet they seem to advertise 40gbe in vmware all over the place so I am confused.
