Hi friends

I want to access around 20GB of a directory from RHEL5 Guest. If i upload the data to the datastore there is no such way like share data from a datastore to VM.

so how can i share such files or folders?

Adding a ParaVirutal SCSI controller

$

Hi All,

I recently went on a VMWare training course and found out about changing my SCSI controllers over to ParaVirtual. The way I was taught to do this would be to add a second ParaVirtual SCSI controller to ID 1:0 to get the driver added to the operating system then shut the system down and switch the main controller (ID 0:0) from LSI Logic SAS to ParaVirtual and then remove the second controller that you added for the driver. I have done this on a couple of servers but most are coming up with the following error when trying to add the ParaVirtual controller:

An error was received from the ESX host while powering on VM %name%.

Failed to start the virtual machine.

Module DevicePowerOn power on failed.

Unable to open the SCSI device '/dev/genscsi/t10.DP______BACKPLANE000000' (scsi1:0): Failed to lock the file.

Does anyone know why this might be? I'm using version 5.1.0

Thanks

vMotion Fails At 14%

Hi Everyone,

Having a bit of a strange issue with vMotion today.  It's been working in my lab for months, and was still working fine after I upgraded to 5.1 last week.

Now, today, for whatever reason, it just refuses to progress beyond 14%, failing with timeout.  Here's the log snippet:

I've tried restarting vCenter itself, no help.  Tried multiple different VMs.  Tried various combinations of my 4 hosts, and none of them work.

I just dont know where else to go - Ideas?

Edit:  Other things I've confirmed:  Time sync is good.  Disk free space is good.  FWD and REV name resolution is good.

UCS 220 M3 RAID Issue

Hi

We recently ordered the Cisco UCS 220 M3 - and configured it with an Embedded Software RAID - UCSC-RAID-ROM15. ESXi is not detecting the RAID, and it appears to be un-supported? Is there any workaround ? OR are we doing something wrong ?

I tried searching in the support matrix but I could not find any info on this RAID. I did find some posts indicating Software RAID is not supported but they are all for different models and also on ESXi 3 , so I wanted to check if any support has been added, or if there is any solution for this.

Thanks

ESXi network config on server with 4 GbE ports, link aggregation/bonding/trunking/teaming

Hi everyone

I've only ever experimented with ESXi on servers with single NICs so this has never been a problem or question before but I'd like to know what the best way is when setting up an ESXi server that has 4 GbE ports. We have 2 switches and these are not stackable switches.

I'd like to have 2 of the GbE ports going in to one switch as a link aggregated group and the other 2 going into the other switch. So each pair of ports being an aggregated link using 802.3ad dynamic link aggregation with LACP, with a theoretical bandwidth capacity of 2Gbps. The management traffic and VM traffic should share the same vswitch. Basically I need to configure 2 pairs of vmnics with link aggregation to the different switches, then failover between those pairs.

To what extent is this possible with ESXi?

Does ESXi support LACP?

Any comments/suggestions with this setup?

Cheers, B

Does anyone store their persistent logs on SD card?

$

When I boot my ESXi hosts that have no hard drives, and only an SD card installed, the vSphere client always complains about not having Persistent Storage set.  I guess ESXi won't allow, by default, the log files to be stored on SD Card.  So in the past I have always setup my logs to be stored on a SAN LUN.

I don't care for doing that so much, as in the event we lose the LUN, we lose the logs.   Has anyone actually set the logs to be stored ON the actual SD card?  I think it CAN be done, but Vmware doesn't do it because SD Cards have some kind of limited-write limitation which can be dicey for log files?  Yet, I can't find information that clearly states how many writes an SD card can have and how many the ESXi logs might generate over time...

Anyone doing this?

Thanks

Unable to clone or create virtual machine from cluster when HA is on.

Using 2 ESXi servers 1 5.0 and the other 5.1 with vCenter 5.1, if I go to the cluster and add a new virtual machine, I get to the specific host screen and I can choose any host, they have a yellow exclamation mark and nothing write in Compatibility. Same happens when I try to clone a machine. If I disable HA this works.... Whats going on here ?

Can I share the same iSCSI target with multiple hosts?

$

I have an iSCSI target LUN that shows up when I view the storage for one ESXi host, but when I view the storage for the other host it does not display. I have added the appropriate networking and iSCSI software adapter to the second host, performed a dynamic scan and it sees the same iSCSI target, however when I go to "add storage" there are no LUNs displayed.

I am obviously missing something, I just can't figure out what it is.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Auto Deploy vSphere ESXi 5.1

Dear all,

When I create an image profile and assign it to Auto Deploy. I add a network based software depot instead for adding "offline depot" from Vmware.

I use cmdlet: Add-EsxSoftwareDepot https://hostupdate.vmware.com/software/VUM/PRODUCTION/main/vmw-depot-index.xml

I built a base image : New-DeployRule –Name “Test” –Item “ESXi-5.0.0-799733-standard” –Pattern “model=VMware Virtual Platform”

Then active the depot rule: Add-DeployRule -DeployRule Test

But when I boot ESXi host, the host display "there are no ESXi image associated with this host

I don't know this problem. Please give me some suggestion to resolve that.

Many thanks.

The file table of the ramdisk 'root' is full on ESXi 5.1

Good Afternoon,

Since upgrading to ESXi 5.1 last fall, we have been experiencing a problem with the ramdisk filling up on our hosts.  I have not yet been able to determine the cause, but when the ramdisk hits the wall, it is almost impossible to troubleshoot.  It usualy appears after 20 or so days of continuous uptime.  Once the ramdisk becomes full, it is not obvious that there is a problem untill you do something like a vmotion.  Then it fails with the following message:

A gereral system error occured

If you look at the host events, there are many of the following types of entries:

The file table of the ramdisk 'root' is full.  As a result, the file
/var/lib/vmware/hostd/journal/1358360282.17 could not be created by
the application 'hostd-worker'.

So I attempt to start SSH on the host to see if I can find what is taking up all of the space.  I go to Configuration -> security profile -> services properties, and enable SSH.  It appears that ssh has started, but in fact it has not.  It looks like ssh will not start due to the fact that the ramdisk is full.  The same thing happens with enabling the local console access.  So now I am stuck.  I have about 30 production vm's that are stuck on this host with a condition that only a reboot seems to fix.  Has anyone else seen this issue?
Thanks,

Failed to start the virtual machine after restore

All Hosts including Test Host: ESXi 5.1.0.1065491

Problem vm: 32 Bit Server 2003

I use Veeam Backup & Restore 6.5 to backup my vm's.  I always do a test restore to make sure my backups are good.  I am having a problem with one restore.  The 32 Bit Server 2003 vm powers up just fine on the main host it runs on.  All of the vm's are 64 Bit except one which is a 32 Bit Server 2003 vm.  All of the vm's restore and power up on a test host except the 32 Bit Server 2003 vm.  After restoring and trying to power up I get the following error:

Failed to start the virtual machine.

Module VPMC power on failed.

Virtualized performance counters require architectural performance monitoring version 3 or greater.

Does anyone know if there is a fix for this problem?

TIA,

Remote Guest Audio

While this isn't specifically an ESXi question I feel it fits here.

With HW v8 vm guests access to HD Audio. Using the Vsphere client to access guests, i do not get audio for obvious reasons. Using windows built in RDP, i get remote audio on windows guest machines.

How can I achieve this same functionality in linux? I have enable the HD Audio profile but since it does not natively support remote audio, im at a lost. Is there another VMware server or piece of software i need to run to enable remote access or remote (KVM) to the guests?

I looked into VMware View but I dont want to purchase something that doesn't suit my need for remote audio.

Any help is appreciated.

ESXI 5.1: Host stops unexpectedly

$

Hi everyone,

I recently built a system to run ESXi and host a bunch of virtual servers.

The ESXi host seems to run very well, but about once every 24 hours it appears as if it loses its ability to use the locally attached disks. When the problem occurs, I am still able to ping the host, and to SSH into it, but the moment I do anything that requires disk IO, my SSH session hangs.

I have spent a lot of time trying to make sure it's not a heat or power issue. I have a multimeter with a temperature probe connected to the cooling fins of the RAID controller's main processor and the raid chip's surface never gets above 39 degrees celcius. Everything else in the host is nice and cool and never above 35 degrees celcius surface temperatures, measured using an infrared thermometer while the system is running.

The "hang" seems to happen regardless of the load I put on the host.

A bit of system info:

CPU: Intel i7-3930K

64 GB RAM

Adaptec 6405 RAID controller

4x Western Digital 1 TB drives in a RAID5 array with 2 volumes: 1 for booting ESXi, 1 to host my VM's.

750 watts power supply

Yesterday, I had the system running for a few hours booted from a CD with the Memtest86 tool, I wanted to try and see if I had flaky RAM. The tests ran just fine, and given the symptom (suddenly can't access the RAID controller) i doubt it's a RAM issue.

I grabbed vmkernel.log (file is attached) and I see sporadic messages along the lines of:

2013-03-25T11:48:56.666Z cpu8:34375)ScsiDeviceIO: 2316: Cmd(0x4124007addc0) 0x85, CmdSN 0xe0 from world 5150 to dev "mpx.vmhba3:C0:T1:L0" failed H:0x0 D:0x2 P:0x0 Valid sense data: 0x5 0x20 0x0.

vmhba3 is my adaptec RAID controller.

I have no idea what this means, or if it's even important, but I thought I'd throw it out there since it seems somehow related to the RAID controller.

My ESXi is using what I believe to be the most recent Adaptec driver.

I have run ESXi for a few yars and it's always been rock solid so I don't know much about how to troubleshoot these types of issues I'm afraid. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi guys anyone configured APC with HA and storage appliance?

I found the "PowerChute Network Shutdown in an HA Cluster, see Clean Shutdown of Virtual Machines using PowerChute Network Shutdown in a HA Cluster Environment." but does this work with the storage appliance HA configuration?

Also what is the proper way of shutting down the Cluster with VSA?

Thank you

Is NVidia Tesla M2075 compatible with ESXi 5.1?

Hi,

We have troubles with a NVidia Tesla M2075 graphic card. In ESXi 5.0 U2 the hardware no recognise the graphic card and show me as unknow devices.

We are try using passtrough utility but nothing has gone right (unknow device)

After surfing in different forums and blogs, we have seen the posibility to upgrade hypervisor to ESXi 5.1 and use VSGA (virtual shared graphics acceleration).

Our question is to know if our Graphic Card installed in the ESXi is going to use the GPU for all the virtual machines.

Additional information:

http://blogs.nvidia.com/2012/08/nvidia-and-vmware-enhance-the-virtual-desktop-experience/

Thank you for your help.

ESXi installation operation failed

Hi Guys,

For a fresh installation of ESXi 5.1, The storage team has given a Boot LUN of 10GB from our EMC symmetrix Storage box. When i try installing the ESXi by selecting the 10GB LUN i get this below error.

This program has encountered an error:

(Use the arrows keys to schoo)

Error (see log for more info)

vmkfstools failed with message: create fs deviceName:'/vmfs/devices

/disks/naa.XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX:8', fsShortName:'vfat',

/vmfs/devices/disks/naa.XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Usage: vmkfstools -C [vmfs3|vmfs5] /vmfs/devices/disks/vml... or,

          vmkfstools -C [vmfs3|vmfs5]'

/vmfs/devices/disks/mpx.vmhbaA:T:L:P

Error: no such file or directory

One doubt is that the storage team has given the LUN ID as 1. I've heard the Boot LUN has to be either 0. Will that be a problem? And They have already configured multiple paths to the Storage array. Will that cause a problem?
