Lost access to SAN storage

Hi,

I'm facing with lost access on our storages, just on some storages that they are assigned from Clariion family.

I'm sure our hardware hasn't problem. It restored after 1 second but we'll face with high latencies.

It's happening after high workload, is there any tools for monitoring that on ESXi?

Hostname does not resolve

Hi folks. I'm getting back to VMware installations after a few years and am having a hard time getting my ESX5i install on VMware Fusion to work properly (testing/re-learning). After installation, i try to configure the network settings and am able to successfully setup the ip/gateway up but when i enter a new host name I am not able to get it to resolve properly on my web browser. I setup the static ip address as 192.168.1.19 and the default gateway and dns server as 192.168.1.1. But after setting the hostname as 'esx5i' (no quotes ofcourse) I am not able to resolve to the welcome screen on my Firefox browser to the ESX 5.1 Welcome screen. I can however enter 192.168.1.19 on the web browser and it brings me to the welcome page successfully. Also when i attempt a 'Test management network' the test only passes the ip addresses but NOT the resolving hostname (esx5i) - Failed. What am i doing wrong? Please help. Thank you!

P.S. My vm network is setup as 'Bridged' in case that was an issue.

ERROR: Failed to execute createHOMObj for the Setup : Unsupported driver type:

We are trying to certify iSCSI Independent driver.

I get the following error for all of the test cases :

ERROR: Failed to execute processSetup for the Setup : Failed to execute createHOMObj for the Setup : Unsupported driver type: <driver name>

Has anyone encountered this ?

Thanks,

ESXi 5.1.0 do not TAG VLAN frames

$

Hello,

in my scenario I am using more virtual switches. One of them has no physical network adapter. Traffic between TRUNK port group and VLAN xxx portgroup inside vSwitch2 is NOT tagged!

VM1 - virtual Linux firewall with 2 NICs and more internal TAP network adapters for VPNs:

NIC1 - vSwitch1, VLAN to WAN connection

NIC2 - TRUNK to vSwitch2 (VLAN 4095)

(NIC2 is bridged to one of TAP adapters to my custommers)

VM2 - virtual Linux server with 1 NIC

NIC1 - vSwitch2, VLAN correspondent to VLAN at my custommer.

Switch Name      Num Ports   Used Ports  Configured Ports  MTU     Uplinks

vSwitch2         128         3           32                9000

PortGroup Name        VLAN ID  Used Ports  Uplinks

  111 vlan111       111      0

  116 vlan116       116      0

  113 vlan113       113      0

  112 vlan112       112      0

  120 vlan120       120      1

  Trunk               4095     1

The problem is:

Ethernet frame from VM2 goes through port group vlan120 AND SHUT BE TAGGED. But it is not, because ON VM1 (which goes through port group Trunk) is all traffic untagged.

Important ifno:

Promiscuous mode on virtual switches is enabled.

I am using same VLAN numbers (corresponding to different VLAN netvorks) on other virtual switches.

Thanks for your help or info.

Best regards

Vspere Web Client external "connection timed out"

Hi all

Im receiving  connection timed out error message from the vsphere Web Client, when trying to access the console of a virtual machine,

On the internal network it works fine but if I access the webclient page externally i can do all things except open a console.

Im wondering if anyone could help me to troubleshoot this issue.

I have tried various things on the firewall to allow ports  902903 9090 8333 8222 and still no fix.

Currently the only firewall port that is open is 9443 so I know that works as its all part of the same rull i just add ports to it.

thanks

ESXi and Intel Flexpriority (Disabled by default in newest 5.1 update)

VMware released a update 22.05.2013 (ESXi510-201305001) which by the looks of it will lower performance by default.

My question is by how much...?

What kind of Virtual Machine workload usually benefits from Intel VT Flexpriority?

Since we as of yet have not been affected by a PSOD as mentioned in the KB:VMware KB:    VMware ESXi 5.1, Patch ESXi510-201305401-BG: Updates esx-base

We are considering installing the update, but re-enabling flexpriority.

I can't find much documentation about where and when flexpriority is usefull for virtual machines except it seems to only affect 32 bit VM's?

Has anyone actually been affected by this bug? If you have, could you share your hardware information?

W2K8 VM freezes if a mounted ISO is not removed properly

Hello

I'm running into some issues about mounting a ISO file to a Win 2008 R2 SP1 VM.

If a client is mounting the ISO with the vSphere Client and is loosing it's network connction while the file is mounted.

Then the VM is freezing for 60 seconds - no IOs, no network, nothing....

I already have a call open for this, but i'm unsure if this is happening only in my environment.

Would somone please be so kind to do a quick test of this issue?

All you need to do, is to mount a ISO file with the vSphere Client to a W2K8 VM and remove the network cable.

Then check from an other pc if the VM is still responding.

On the ESXi Host side we are on the newest build level, vCenter is still on 5.0.

Best regards

Andy

Moving VM from one local datastore to the other...

What is the easiest way of moving existing VM from one local datastore to the other one?

I thought about backing up VM (i.e. with ghettoVCB), deleting VM, restoring VM on new datastore and creating new VM with existing files, but maybe there is some easier way...

Deploy OVF - Cannot choose disk size?

Hey, when I'm deploying an OVF file in ESXI, it doesn't allow me to choose how much of my datastore disk I want to use up. If I allow it to just install on the whole disk, then that'll lock up the disk for me to deploy other OVFs yeah. How do I deploy an OVF file and limit the disk size to say 20 GB? Thanks

VMWare ESXi or Linux+Workstation for home server ?

$

Hello !

I'm planning to upgrade my home server (Samba, XBMC, FTP, VPN, torrents) because I need a test farm of VMs and current config doesn't allows to do it.

I'm thinking about ASUS Z9PE-D8 WS, Intel Xeon E5-2620 Sandy Bridge-EP, 32GB, 4x2TB 7200rpm, 1x500GB SSD as HW part.

I see 2 configurations of SW:

1. VMWare ESXi on usb-stick, SSD for VMs, one VM - OpenIndiana (for ZFS and as a fileserver for other VMs and local network), other VMs - Linux (XBMC), ??? (SAP), several VMs for testing

2. Linux (Gentoo + ZFS) as a main OS, VMWare Workstation over it with all OSes I told above.

#2 is clear for me - I have such config right now, everything works ok. Except for ZFS. My Gentoo w/o ZFS now.

#1 questions:

1. XBMC media player. Will it work ok in VM over ESXi ? Speed, 3D, audio, video - maybe someone tried it ?

2. HDD DRM for ZFS. As I understand i'll lost such things like realtime snapshotting. It's really no good. Maybe it's better to use ESXi storage mechanism or buy external raid... But I'd like to use ZFS.

3. SAP + DBs + other VMs (Windows too) - speed ?

4. VPNs/Routing between VMs. As I understand, ESXi allows it, Workstation - doesn't.

Where I'm wrong or maybe someone tried something of it ?

Thanks.
