Hi,

I manually copied a vmdk file from local system to datastore, then edited *.vmx file of existing VM and changed name vmdk file to my coped file.

But, after that I could not start the VM and getting following errors

ESXi5 losing internet connectivity

Hi all,

I have a ESXi5 box (Dell PE 2950) running Win2008 as a DC and DNS server as well as a ClearOS Pro 5.0 appliances running.  They have been running fine for the the last year with no problems and now both appliances lose internet connectivity within a couple minutes of starting.  From within the consoles of each appliance I can ping around our local network with no problem and resolve host names internally but  they can not reach anything outside the network for some reason nor resolve names. Every time I reboot,  internet connectivity is there for a couple of minutes then disappears.  Workstations, if set to use our isp's DNS servers connect just fine to the internet, if I set them to use the Win2008 DNS, they can connect for the first few minutes but once the DNS server loses connectivity, workstation connections are lost.

What is up with this.

This is driving me nuts....

Thanks

Jeff

unable to connect to the MKS: internal error

Hi - can anyone help with this please

I've been using Vsphere 4 for a couple of years at my last company - no problems, bullet proof reliaility

Recently changed jobs and my current company is now starting to virtualise so I'm trying to convince them that VMware is the path to take. As a test to demo that there are no problems I have the free version of ESXi5 up and running - patched to build 768111. One guest VM running Windows Web Server 2008 R2.

All ran OK for about a week, then suddenly started getting

unable to connect to the MKS: internal error

when connecting to the console. The VSphere client and ESXi box are on the same subnet - no firewalls involved. Can telnet to the ESXi IP address on port 902 without issue. It all worked fine for a week, then just stopped.

I did the following

- Restarted the management network on ESXi

- Rebooted the guest

No effect

Shutdown the guest via a Terminal Server Session, then tried to power it on via the console. Got another error - A general system error occurred: Unknown error

Finally gave up and rebooted the ESXi box - all then worked OK

The ESXi box is an AD domain member and is resolvable in DNS. It is time synched from the local DC on the same subnet.

This is not a good start when trying to sell VMware on the basis of reliability.

Thanks

Nexus 1000v and Dell m1000e, m610 blades, 2 cisco switch blades in A1 and A2

Hello,

This is probably a question for cisco, but I find lots of answers to these types of questions here so I thought I'd start here first.  I have recently installed the nexus 1000v in a lab, in a dell m1000e chassis with four m610 blades running vsphere 5.1.  After the pain of installing it and seeing everything working well enough, I went to search for best practices.  Each blade has just the 2 LAN on motherboard ports.  They are all members of the nexus 1000v (so 8 vmnics) port profile for uplinks.  In the Nexus 1000v their port profile sets them for channel-group auto mode on mac-pinning.  I'm reading it is better to use LACP.  Here is my question that has me a little confused: would I put all the internal ports on the switch blades (G1/0/1, G2/0/1, G1/0/2, G2/0/2, etc for all 8) in to the same channel group?  Or would each pair of ports (G1/0/1 and G2/0/1) for each blade be in their own group?  To my understanding, LACP can have a max of 8?  So if the chassis were fully populated, that'd be 32 ports, so it seems it wouldn't work?  Looks to me like the Nexus 1000v tucked the pairs of vmnics (vmnic0 and vmnic1) in to their own channel groups, so that seems to make more sense that I'd have 4 port channels on the physical switch blades, for each host.  I might have made this a confusing question, so feel free to ask for clarification.  Configs are on a classified system, but I can do my best to post them without naughty info.

Hello,

I'm trying to install ESXi 5.0 on my HP DL360p Gen8 server. The problem is it can't see the local hard drives that are mirrored on the server. It only recognizes the internal SD storage.

Has anyone come across this issue before?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thankyou,

Hi,

I have a problem with ping response on the ESXi 5.1 hosts, in last febrary VMware published a a following KB : VMware KB Article Unavailable

But it's not authorize now

In this KB it was a workaround with command line to fix the pb, I have just keep the link of kb in my favorite not the command and now VMware publish this KB : VMware KB: Change to ICMP ping response behavior in ESXi 5.1

But they don't fix the problem.

If someone have the good command to fix my problem I'm open.

Disk performance issue in the VM cluster node 1 in ESXi5

cluster node 1 is having disk performance issue in the SQL DB when cluster node 1 becomes the Active node.

while in cluster node 2 there is no disk performance issue when it becomes the Active node.

DB team claims that when they try to create a DB file normaly it takes only 75 seconds because of the disk performance issue it has been delayed to 700 seconds.

The storage used is EMC Symmetric VMAX, the storage team claims that there is no issue from their end, as the the same LUN is used by node 2 which works fine

but in node 1 its not. so they says that its not from storage side. Any idea...?

Adaptec 7805 PCI Passthrough Issue w/ ESXi 5.1 and Ubuntu 12.04 + Windows 2008 R2 guests

$

Hello,

I am pretty new to VMware/ESXi but I am taking ESXi 5.1 for a spin (free trial license) to see if it will become the hypervisor of choice for my home server.  So far so good, until I wanted to get around the 2TB VMFS limit by passing my Adaptec 7805 card through directly to an operating system.

I cannot, for the life of me, get it to work right.  I made sure I am using the compatible 1.2.1-29900 drivers on both the host, and the guest operating systems, but I am having some strange issues when actually trying to do the pass-through.  I don't know if I am encountering a bug or just doing something wrong or unsupported with my license?

As expected, after enabling IOMMU on the host's BIOS, the Adaptec card (as well as my NICs) showed-up under Advanced Configuration as being eligible for pass-through/DirectPath.  So, I of course enabled it on the PCIe Adaptec 7805.

I am able to get the device to be passed-through in the VM settings; and when I install the operating system Ubuntu shows the PCI card under "lspci":

inferno@amahi:~$ lspci | grep Adaptec

0b:00.0 RAID bus controller: Adaptec Device 028c (rev 01)

...and, if I try a Windows 2008 R2 VM, it will up as a "RAID Controller" with the yellow exclamation mark, as expected.

[...]

The headaches begin when I attempt to install drivers, on either type VM.  NOTE, I am not attempting to use both VMs at the same time, I've tried these one at a time with the opposite VM completely deleted.

In Ubuntu 12.04, using the stock/default (v1.1.x) aacraid drivers does not cause me any problems, but it never sees my RAID10 array that's built in the BIOS of the controller card.  I was assuming this might be because they don't match the version of drivers running on the host, so I've tried a myriad of things and I get pretty much the same results as soon as I tinker with the aacraid drivers.  Here is what I've attempted:

- installing the 1.2.1-29900 Ubuntu 12.04 binary drivers from Adaptec

- compiling the 1.2.1-29900 dkms drivers myself and installing them

- installing the 1.2.1-33000 Ubuntu 12.04 binary drivers from Adaptec

- upgrading the host drivers to b33000 (as well as Ubuntu), however these are not listed as compatible on the VMWare site.

What happens after I install the aacraid drivers is pretty strange (and this happens with any of the four scenarios mentioned)... after an extended period of time after the first reboot following aacraid driver installation, I just get a black screen on the console.  The GUI never will load, but eventually I get a text-based Ubuntu login prompt.  This only lasts 5-10 minutes, then the console (but not the VM!) completely dies.  Completely black screen, no mouse cursor, typing doesn't do anything yet the play button icon is depressed.  The VM is not completely hung -- just the console, as I am able to log into the VM through SSH and poke around, but if I run "arcconf" (Adaptec controller mgmt utility for CLI), it will not detect a controller.  dmesg / fdisk / udev all do not see the RAID array as /dev/sdb (or any other device name, for that matter).

In Windows 2008 R2, it also will not work.  If I manually try to update the yellow exclamation mark "RAID Controller" driver to the appropriate drivers from Adaptec (same version running on the host), the entire VM instantly crashes (play button pops out, stop button depresses, and I get an error notification in the host's Event log that states:

"VMware ESX unrecoverable error: (vcpu-0) PCIPassthru: 01:00.0 tried to modify MSI-X vectors number 32-32, but maximum supported vector number is 31"

I actually have no idea what that means, and doing some preliminary Google searches on it have led me astray.  Any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated; my goal is to get PassThrough working to the Ubuntu VM so it can become my file server with full access to the RAID10 array without having to worry about the 2TB VMFS limitation and for increased performance...

Here are my system specs for reference:

- ESXi 5.1 w/Update 1

- AMD Opteron 6300 16-core CPU

- 64GB ECC RAM (<-- I have read the free ESXi will only support 32GB RAM, but is that the case with the trial version as well?  are my issues related?)

- SuperMicro H8SGL-F Motherboard

- Adaptec 7805 SAS RAID Controller Card

- 128GB SSD (attached to on-board SATA controller, for datastore/VMs)

Any help, tips, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

ESXi Host has how many luns presented to it

$

Hi,

I have close to 24 hosts in a cluster. On some of them all luns are presented and on some of them only few of them are presented.

I have vms with RDMs and it becomes hard for me to track how many hosts have that RDM/LUN assigned to them.

I would like to know is there a way to find out esxi host has how many luns presented to them. If they have been converted to Datastores - RDMs or still unallocated. but a detailed report for all the luns

thanks in advance

Reporting on NIC Driver stats

$

0

We have HP DL380 G7/G8 servers with the Emulex NC552SFP NIC.  The driver puts all sorts of interesting stats like number of drops, fragments, pause frames, errors, etc. in text files stored in /proc/net/be-vmnicNNN (where NNN is a unique number identifying the NIC).  These are neat since they show things that you can't get from esxtop or the vSwitch so I'm trying to find a clever way to pull those stats off of the host so we can report and trend them.

The best we've got so far is enabling SSH on the hosts and having a central server run a script to login to each host and pull the files and once they're copied over we parse the files to pull out the things we care about and drop them into a reporting system. This is pretty clunky and I'd rather not need to use SSH so I wanted to see if this group had a better idea or if someone has already solved this problem.  Someone asked if we could use SNMP to pull just the info we want but the combination of my unfamiliarity with SNMP and my inability to find documentation on MIBs for the Emulex NICs (and not knowing what to do with them if I got them) has left me stuck on that front.  This is an intriguing idea, just not sure if we should go down that path or how to start.

Any ideas or nudges in the right direction would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Jeremy

Login to VC 5 without AD authentication

Hi All,

I have ESXi5.1 hosts and 5.1b VC. If my DC is down then I am not longer able to login to VC via VI Client.

I have installed SSO - Inventory Service and then VC.

What changes do I need to make so that even if my DC is down the Users who are registered in SSO can login to VC via VI Client or via Web Client.

Is there a document that I can follow.

Thanks

Hello,

We have a customer currently deploying a (800 users) Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R2 environment.

We want to run this on a vsphere 5.1 U1 environment but the customer is told by Microsoft and Dynamic partners that vmware + dynamics is a bad combination.
They are told that hyperv is much better.

I`m looking for ppl who have deployed AX 2012 (r2) on vmware and iscsi storage.

Could you please share which tweaks you have in place?

We want to run the ax servers and the sql servers on the same physical hw. We already have the fasted intel proc available.
We have 10GB network in place (force10, S4820T) and have 10gb san's (equallogic 2x PS6110XV in raid10).

All tips are welcome but if you could explain the "why" that would help me alot.

We also want to put the AX temp directory and the SQL temp directory on a FusionIO card or SSD drivers..

Thanks alot

Unable to vMotion from 1 host in a cluster - erroring at 63%

$

0

Hi all,

I was wondering whether anyone had come across a odd issue we currently have. We have a 10 host cluster but currently we're unable to vmotion any running machines off one particular host to other hosts within the cluster. vmotion works ok between all the other hosts, plus we're able to vmotion a vm to the host experiencing issues, but are then unable to vmotion that same vm back to the host that we have just vmotioned it from.

Networking configuration looks the same, storage configuration looks the same, other hosts have plenty of capacity to accept the vm's (on the host are a variety of different size configurations, ranging from 1gb to 16gb of configured memory and 1 cpu to 4 cpu configured.

Message returned is:

failed to receive migration. Insufficient video ram. The maximum resolution of the virtual machine will be limited to 1672x1254. To use the configured maximum resolution of 2560x1600, increase the amount of video ram allocated to this virtual machine by setting svga.vramSize="16384000" in the virtual machine's configuration file. So this message leads me to this posts like the following:

http://blog.vmpros.nl/2011/01/16/vmware-insufficient-video-ram-the-maximum-resolution-of-the-virtual-machine-will-be-limited-to-1672x1254/

However the VM's don't have any issue powering on, can be migrated between all other hosts without issue, can be migrated onto the host experiencing the problem but then can't be migrated back off without producing the above error. The VM's can be migrated off the host experiencing the issue if they are powered off or in a suspended state, they just can't be migrated off that same host if in a powered on state.

Checking the hostd log just after the vmotion has failed, the messages contained in there are vmotionsrc, resolvecb failed with fault: (vmodl.fault.systemerror), faultCause = (vmodl.MethodFault) null, reason = "Source detected that destination failed to resume".

VMkpings from the host experiencing the issue out to the other hosts, plus vmpkings from other hosts into the host experiencing the issue return successfully. We've also tried amended the migrate.enabled parameter to 0 and back to 1 again to see if that helps but with no joy.

The last resort is to power down all the VM's on the host, give the host a reboot and see how it the issue still persists after that, however there are a few VM's on the host where we'll have to get the downtime arranged before we can do that, so it'd be good to work out how to get these VMs off that host whilst they are still powered on, just in case we have this issue again.

Does anyone have any ideas / different logs to check to track down the issue?

Thanks

Administration role has been assigned to the users group which does not contain any users. Root (the only login on our system) is now read only. This renders the system pretty much useless. How can I reset the roles without wiping out the virtual servers?
