Dear All,
Can anyone please advise the hardware (Motherboard, Processor, RAM, NIC etc. ) that is best suited for building a vSphere ESXi home lab ? My budget is under $1000 and would require 32GB RAM or if possible max 64GB RAM.
Cheers,
KK

My current ESXi version is 5.5 and 6 has incompatibility issues with the Host hardware, or it just doesn't work. I am not an expert, so please bear with me if I miss something.
So what happened was my VMs were running fine - two of them running CentOS 6 on ESXi 5.5. Couple of days back, all services were down from the VMs. When I logged into the Web Console, VMs were powered down and cannot be powered on no matter what. When I checked, I found there were updates that ran thereby updating/upgrading ESXi to version 6.
So now, I reinstalled it and mapped the vmdk file to the new ESXi 5.5 and the VM works fine now. Phew!! However, I need to protect my VMs from future updates or upgrades. I don't know how the update ran on its own. Is there an auto update option or anything that can trigger? How can I turn this off so that I don't run into this problem again?
Hello Gurus,
Offlate i noticed an event log entry in vSphere client twice in short span of less than a day related to local storage as follows:
Lost access to volume
4f4c8bc0-4d13eab8-c8fc-5cf3fc09c3fa (vms-1)
due to connectivity issues. Recovery attempt is in
progress and outcome will be reported shortly.
info

and immediately
Successfully restored access to volume 4f4c8bc0-

connectivity issues.
info

The event details itself recommends "Ask VMware" link leads to VMware KB: Host Connectivity Degraded
and
this VMware KB: Host Connectivity Restored
As per the KB VMware is referring to SAN LUN, but in our case its the local storage, kindly shed some info as to why the local storage would lost its connectivity.
Note: all the local disk are on RAID-10.
thanks
I have 2 ESXI 5.1 Data center and both have spikes in CPU utilization Jumping for High everyday, I have Voice Cisco Call Manager which is impact Voice Application by unregistered all Cisco Phone for 3 Min and Register again.
Please let me know what is the best Practice to avoid this issue.

Hi Guys
I have an issue at a customer running latest version ESXi 5.5.
The setup is 2 DELL servers connected to a DELL MD3400. Only one of the hosts are currently conected.
The problem is that the host Looses access to the storage after reboot. A rescan does not reconnect, but a reboot of the MD3400 does.
After the storage box is restarted the host can see the datastore Again.
Connection to the host is over a dedicated SAS Card running 12 Gbs and when the connection is there the VM's are running perfect.
MD3400 is updated with latest firmware.
Logs does not give any clues to why the connection is broken.
Any ideas?

Hi,
I am using VMware Vsphere client 5.5, and already installed 4 virtual server on HP server.
all servers connected to 2 NIC (0 &1) and management on NIC 0, installation done locally ( direct connection to server ), then NIC 0 connected to customer corporate and assigned IP 10.110.41.21
I am trying to connect to server over corporate using Vsphere client with IP address 10.110.77.124, I am trying to open any virtual system console but in vain with following error message :
unable to connect to the MKS: Login ( Username/Password ) incorrect
I checked port 902 status and it's ok , please your kind support
I've got a v5.5 environment, running Veeam 9 as our backup. When I use SureBackup, all VMs come back up in the test environment without a NIC attached.
Its a mix of 2012R2 and 2008R2 servers, and all adapters are VMXNET3 adapters.
Some have up-to-date tools, others don't.
I've tried adding a spare NIC to the config, and in those instances neither NIC is present when I do a restore.
I've also disabled hot-plug which appears to have no effect.
I've opened a ticket but haven't gotten a response.
Its not critical as its just a lab, but I want to make sure that I can verify my backups are working correctly.
Any ideas?
Can anyone help on the below error.
VMware ESX internal monitor error - Please see the attachment for error details.
Hello,
I've 4 ESXi 6 hosts in a HA cluster.
What will happen if the ESXi host crashes and vCSA was running on that host?
Will the vCSA still automatically start on a other host? (I think: This should be a vCSA action, but when it is down nothing will happen.)
Is there a way to avoid this? I know I can build 2 Windows vCS in a cluster but I don't really want that.

S
Hi All,
Just wanted to understand the basics of CPU assigned to a VM. For example I have a ESXi Host with 2 physical CPU's and each CPU having 4 cores. Total cores 8.
Now I have two VM's A & B each with each 6 vCPU's. As I understand each vCPU will be aligned to a different core. Now if VM A for example is using all the CPU in the OS i.e. using all 6 cores.
If VM B has to do some CPU related job (same time) -- it will not be able to do this because as I understand till the time VM B is not getting free 6 physical cores for its 6 vCPU's it will not be able to process any CPU request. Though it has two physical cores free.
Is this right ?
Thanks

Hello Community!
I need help in this mystery.
I have three different VMS, all of them with e1000 (also I tried all VMs with vmxnet3) and the last vmware tools.
Two of this VMs, are in the same Physical Host (ESXi 5.5.0 2068190). Let's name for example: VM-1A & VM-2A
Another VM, is in other Physical Host (ESXi 5.5.0 2068190). Let's name VM-1B
Both ESXi Hosts are connected with two 10Gbit NICs with load Balancing:"Route based on IP hash", and detection:"Link status only".
Traffic Shaping is disable in all Ports.
The environment is very clean, and we don't have more VMs that can disturb the test (or inappreciable).
VM-1A: 10.12.50.201 - Physical Host ESX-A
VM-2A: 10.12.50.202 - Physical Host ESX-A
VM-1B: 10.12.50.200 - Physical Host ESX-B
Why I am seeing better network speed benchmark, when two VMs are sending something from two different Physical Host than when the both VMs are in the same Physical Host?????
It is not a "iperf" issue, I used other test with scp and I got the same speed.
Thank you very much!!!!
PS: The Physical hosts are: Dell PowerEdge R620 - 16 Xeon Cores - 384GB RAM
We have 2 customers with 5.5U3 + Express patch 10 (Build 35686722) with a lot of issues since the update/upgrade to this version.
1. Performance issues: CPU related issues like high 100% CPU peaks on the Host
- DRS is not migrating any VMs
- the total used CPU power of the VMs is approximately20 - 30% (100% CPU load on the host makes no sense, no other tasks are in progress)
2. Power on a VM takes 2 to 15 Minutes till the task is 100% completed (and the VM can boot)
At the moment, we have 2 support cases open. Does someone else have the same problems?
About the environments
- All ESX-Hosts in the cluster have the same build
- NFS Datastores
- DRS is fully automated
- no other task are in progress (example: no backups or snapshot creating)
Additional Information
- Customer 1: Upgrade from 5.1 to 5.5U3 + Express patch10
- Customer 2: Update from 5.5U1 to 5.5U3 + Express patch10
Here the link to the build numbers (ESXi)
Hi Forum
This is my first post here, actually there was a power outage which resulted in corruption of one of the datastore on my server which resides on local harddisk of the server
now i need to repair it or extract data out of it which is critical for me. the server version is 5.5.
I can see the device in devices but not in datastore, it keeps asking me to add that storage and create new datastore which i am reluctent to do as it will format.
your response will be greatly appricated.

Hi,
We are trying to implement AD authentication for some of our ESXi hosts.
Our aim is to have primary authentication of ESXI hosts via C# client/api/SDK done with SSO.
Also we want to implement SSO authentication for SSH/SCP.
Is AD SSO authentication supported on an ESXi host via SSH/SCP?
Is there any documentation which can outline how this can be done?
Our hosts are domain joined via the vSphere authentication proxy.
We have tested C# client SSO authentication and it works without problems.
For ESXi authentication I have not found anything, except adding this line to the sshd_config and restarting SSH
Our sshd_config is the default sshd_config file to which we added following:
GSSAPIAuthentication yes
However we can't connect to the ESXi hosts via SSH.
We're probably missing something, anyone care to point us in the right direction?
Thank you

We are seeing an issue where when we update VMware Tools the A-record on our DNS server is removed for that VM. The only way to resolve the issue is to "ipconfig /registerdns" which I feel is find for a band-aid, but not a good solution.
It seems as though others have had this same issue in the past without any real VMware resolution.
