Access Service Console Remotely
Is there a way to access the VMware host service console remotely?
An error occurred while consolidating disks: 5 (Input/output error).
Hi,
I'm having this error when trying to consolidate a VM. Any idea what the problem is?
Thank you
Empty datastore after reboot
Hi everyone
After a power failure I had to reboot my ESXi 5.10 server, and after that the virtual maching hosted by the ESXi server appeared in Unknown state, when I opened the datastore browser I realized that the datastore is empty, so no vmk file or the virtual machine flat files in it... all gone!!!
After searching a lot I couldn't find a solution yet, the files are there althought the datastore is empty because I tried DiskInternals VFMS Recovery and it brings a lot of files inside the virtual machine but without their real name.
When I access the ESXi through SSH all the ESXi file structre is there and it works well, but when I go to the datastore it's empty as well as its shown in vSphere Client
I suspect that something in the ESXi partition table or in the MTF it's wrong, but I cannot figure out how to make the disappeared files appear again in the datastore to run again the virtual machine.
Any help will be appreciated

SSD = true in 'Drive Type'
Does anyone know how to set this flag to true within ESXi? I know there is a way to do this in vSphere 6 through the web client, and there is also a way to do this via the CLI when using NMP devices. The issue we have is that we are using PowerPath and can't seem to find a way to do this in 5.5. Any thoughts?
Disk size in Windows show 50GB but vCenter shows 120GB
This is a server that has been running fine for years. I am starting to get disk space warnings I checked vCenter and it shows the c: drive to be 120GB but when I remote into the server I can only account for about 55GB. Windows disk manager also shows the disk size as 120GB but checking the properties of each folder and running WinDirStat only shows around 55GB of stuff. Where is the rest of the space?

vSphere 5.5 kickstart to configure static IP
Hello folks,
I've spent some time trying to an unintended install to work correctly and adding functionality as I go.
Right now I am trying to run a command after initial install and reboot to configure a static ip address for the host.
I can tell that the configuration file is applying but is not setting the IP. Still set to DHCP when finished.
Anyone can tell from my ks.cfg file what I may be doing wrong?
Thanks, romatlo

Linux VM with swapping and not balloning
Hi,
We have some linus VMs (RHEL 6) and today we noticed that they worked really slow.
When I checked the "Resource Allocation" tab on 1 of those VMs I noticed that it was using a lot of Swap (almost 1/3 of all its' memory) and 0 Balloning.
I know that it could happen if the VMware Tools is not up to date on the VM, so I checked it and it was fine.
These VMs are running on ESXi 5.5 U2.
Now, I have 2 questions:
1. How is it possible that the VM is using only the Swap and not the ballon if the VMware tools is installed and running (also check with esxtop command and the ballon driver is installed)
2. Is it possible that the information I see under the "Resource Allocation" tab is old? or is it a fresh info from now? (I can also see the swap in the performance tab under memory).
Thanks!

Storage Scan Failure ESXi 5.5
Hey everyone, I'm kinda stumped here. I'm getting an issue when scanning my iSCSI software adapter on any of my hosts. I have 3 in a cluster config, any ideas? I've rebooted two of my hosts in hope to alleviate the issue, they still persist. Hope I'm posting in the right place, thanks!

Options to migrate VM's from old hardware to new hardware, different vCenter
I have about 225 VM's that I need to migrate from older hardware/SAN managed by a 5.1 vCenter, to new hardware/SAN managed by a version 6 vCenter. The two environments are in the same physical location and have basic network connectivity between them, but otherwise are totally separate. I have looked into different options to move the VM's, but I can't seem to come up with a good method for moving that many VM's relatively efficiently.
What are my options here?
We own Veeam Backup and Replication - could that be utilized?
Thanks.
SMBIOS Configuration Parameters Character Limit
Dear Experts,
Can someone please let me know the limit of the characters that can be entered in the SMBIOS Configuration Parameters for a VM? I have been told we can enter a maximum of 1024 characters but I am unable to enter more than 60. Please see below. The machine.id parameters can't possible exceed 1024 characters. Can someone please clarify? Appreciate your assistance!
Note - I am accessing my VMs using vSphere Windows Client. Server is installed with VMware ESXi 5.5.
Thanks

Write I/O for SCSI0:0 is out of range
Hello,
I have this warning on my VMware log:
[FFEACA90 warning 'Statssvc'] Calculated write I/O size 524544 for scsi0:0 is out of range -- 524544,prevBytes = 32941955584 curBytes = 32943004672 prevCommands = 1466441curCommands = 1466443
How to find SCSI0:0 relates to what device? And what does this warning means, something to worry about?
Thanks.
quiesced snapshot; event 50, 57, 137, 140, 157, or 12289
Hi Community,
we are working on an error during guest replication from one ESX 5.1 U3 Host to another one (same Release and same patchlevel), where the Windows Source guest (Windows Server 2008 R2; Windows 2012 R2; Windows 7 SP1) generates some of the errors listet in the subject, during the generation of the quiesced snapshot. Last year we found a VMWare knowledge base article, where a patch was offered but now we found the same kb article without the patch but the note that there is currently no solution available[1].
We guess that this is a problem for many users and we want to ask how these users handle this problem. Can we ignore this issue or maybe is a undocumented solution available?
Please note that we currently cannot upgrade to version 6 because of hardware incompatibility issues.
Thx in advance and bye Tom
Unable to mount the existing LUN
Hi All,
We are facing a critical problem, we have 2 EXSi 5.5 U3b which manage by V-Center
Unfortunately V-Center is one of the VM in 2 EXSi
Problem = We have 2*2 TB=4 TB of LUN mapped to 2 EXSi, Yesterday 3 VMs went inactive state rest of the VMs are active if we browse the LUN it show empty nothing available
I do the SSH of 2 EXSi and try to mount
/vmfs/volumes # cd xxxxxxxxxxxx
EXSi reply : -sh: cd: can't cd to xxxxxxxxxxx
I try to force mount # esxcfg-volume -m xxxxxxxx
Reply : no matching volume xxxxxxxx found!
We are able to see the active FC adapters the links are up, we try to do "ADD STORAGE" in VSphere but it as for format so we canceled.
At last we decided to reboot the 2 EXSi so we have shutdown down all the running VMs and reboot once EXSi active but no luck we done "RESCAN" still in same problem state.
PLEASE ADVICE ME THE BEST SOLUTION TO HAVE MY EXISTING LUN WITHOUT ANY ISSUE.
Thanks
Venkat

Using ESXi host web client -- all works except the remote console
Hi everyone,
I am Using ESXi web client -- all works except the remote console. I do have the vmrc installed but clicking on the "launch remote console" does exactly nothing. Not an attempt to do anything at all. As if I have NOT clicked anywhere?
I'm using Chrome Version 51.0.2704.106 m and the host is 5.0.0 Update 3 (Build 3086167) using the latest VIB
Any suggestion will be appreciate! Thanks

Loss of access to the volume
Hi,

Datastore showing inactive, yet accessible
Check out the attachment. I have two hosts connected to an IBM v3700 storage unit. In the past, the two hosts were connected to the storage device using two connections. Each host connected to node 1 and each host connected to node two on the storage device.
We brought in a second storage device and a second server. So, I removed on of the redundant connections from the old hosts to the IBM storage so I could get all three servers "seeing" both storage devices.
Now, when I log into vcenter, I see what you see in the attachment. Datastore1 shows inactive, yet I can browse it, I can see the VM running on it and the VM is up and working as expected.
I'm thinking that this is some sort of ghost or that the inactive is showing since I broke the second connection, but I need to understand what's going on before I move forward with my new storage and new servers.
Can anyone shed some light on this please?
Thanks
