Mouse not fuctioning in guest OS with via vSphere on 4k monitor and firepro v7900

Using vSphere Client and ESXi 5.5. I have been searching for anything like this and have not seen anyone else with this problem.

When I open a vSphere console for any OS win7, win8, server8 or 12 I can not use the mouse to click on or select anything.  As I move the mouse within guest OS it changes from a hand pointer to an arrow pointer back to a hand pointer rapidly.  VMware tools is installed in all OS's.  Some times as I move the mouse the numlock light on the keyboard will flash on and off rapidly.

Tried ESXi 5.5 on a Dell Poweredge 2850 III and a Dell T3500 with the same issue.

The mouse does work in full screen and on any other computer that I access guest OS from.

The only big difference between this computer a dell t5500 and any other workstation I use to access esxi is that it has a 4k Seiki Monitor and firepro v7900.  Resolution is set at 3840x2160 30hz.  Even though I knew it would not help I have tried a different mouse and keyboard.  No hub or kvm. When I moved resolution down to 1920x1080 I get the same results with mouse reacting to movement but no clicking on anything within guest OS.  Just uninstalled and reinstalled vSphere with same results. I'm not sure what to try next and am hoping someone has an idea of what is going on here.

Thanks

Same pattern of CPU utilization on all the VMs

Hi,

We are managing few VMs on our ESXi server.

Problem we are facing is that CPU utilization of all the VMs follow the same pattern. If the CPU utilization of one server goes high, others too follow the same.

This behavior is very much alarming when the CPU utilization reaches 100%.

Attached image clearly show this.

Can some body help me to understand this behavior?

ESXi swap file issue

Hello all,

I seem to have created a circular loop with some settings on my esxi host.

To assist with offsite replication of some datastores I've changed my esxi host swap location to another (non replicated) datastore.

I've just realised I've created a problem as this datastore is not available as is was provided by a guest (iSCSI target).

And yes .... cant start the guest because no default swap available, no swap available with no guest.

Changing via vSphere client is not possible because the value (datastore) never becomes available and it doesn't seem to timeout.

So... does someone know where to change this value back to defaults via cli?

Thanks

ESXi 5.x on an Intel J1900 board (Q1900-ITX Asrock) issue

Hello everyone!

I have been trying to install ESXi 5.1u1 & 5.1u2 & 5.5u1 on the following configuration to no success so far:

Asrock Q1900-ITX mobo (Intel J1900 Baytrail SoC, BIOS 1.20 with VT-x support)

8GB RAM Kingston

120GB OCZ Vector 150 (tried to connect on both SATA2.0 and SATA3.0)

Intel CT1000 NIC

Bootable 4GB FAT32 USB stick with an extracted installation (using Unetbootin) (tried to connect on both USB2.0 and USB3.0)

ESXi 5.1uX results in/stops at a black window/screen after the "Relocating modules and starting the kernel" message.

ESXi 5.5u1 starts loading the modules and stops/freezes right after the "Relocating modules and starting the kernel" message.

I have tried in the bios:

- Boot USB legacy

- Boot USB UEFI

- Disabled PXE (both NICs)

- Video memory to a minimum (64MB)

- Disabled onboard audio & NIC

- I have tried (unofficial?) inserting drivers into the installation ISO (NIC/microcode/xahci) from v-front.de.

I know that most/all of my hardware is not on the HCL, which doesn't mean it can't work, of course (like my old system).

All to no luck so far. However I successfully installed Proxmox hypervisor on this system. Others successfully installed NAS4Free (FreeBSD) or Ubuntu/Debian.

But I want ESXi 5.x for my home server, like I have on my old Intel D525 with a max of 4GB and OCZ Vertex 2 SSD (ESXi 5.1u2).

Maybe someone has some tips or advice to install ESXi 5.x on my new system?

Client-connected usb devices over RDP

Hi ,

One of our customers has an structure with three ESXi 5.0 where are running several virtualized servers. One of them is a Windows 2003 Server which provides terminal server services. They are installing thin clients, axel ax3000, connecting to this server trough RDP. At the moment we are not able to see USB devices plugged into the axel clients, however these devices are correctly redirected to the terminal sesion when the same thin client connects to a non virtualized server in the same domain.

I have been checking documentation and I have found the way to passthrough usb devices connected to the host, wich is not the case, or how to use a usb device connected to the client via vsphere client, which is neither.

The question is, is there any way to redirect a usb device client-connected to a terminal server session using only the RDP client?

Thanks and regards.

Efficient / Best way to P2V then V2V ...

Hi,

I tried the below....

(1) Install the Standalone VMWare Convertor on a site office Windows 2012 server and perform a P2V (takes around an hour), I then bring in back the .vmdk to office and using the Standalone VMWare Convertor to convert it/direct import it back to our ESXi server, it takes 2 to 3 days.... (the vmdk size is around 37.4GB)

(2) Install the Standalone VMWare Convertor on a site office Windows 7 professional wks and perform a P2V (takes around 45 minutes), I then bring in back the .vmdk to office and COPY the .vmdk direct to the ESXi datastore and add it to the inventory. It failed when first start it up "Module DevicePowerOn power on failed. Unable to create virtual SCSI device for scsi0:0,'/vmfs/volumes/6465465-464654-464654-464654/abcde.vmdk' Failed to open disk scsi0:0: unsupported or invalid disk type 7. Ensure that the disk has been imported" then I make it zeroedthick via SSH (takes around 20 minutes) but ended up, cannot hock up the VM....

Do you have any advise on how to do this... please ...

ESXi 5.5: VM Performance on RAID 10 Datastore - How many spindles??

$

I/we have a lab/development box that is running on a hodge-podge of random combination of drives ranging from 2.5" SSD's to 3.5" 2TB HDD's. The time has come to streamline the hardware as we are adding a second (identical) development/lab host.

I found that a striped datastore with two spindles (4x 320GB 7200RPM HDD's in RAID-10) performed reasonably well however the VMs placed on that array were all fairly passive (active directory & management servers, vCenter appliance, etc.).

I know there is MUCH discussion online about this topic but I have not found anything definitive other than "it all depends" or "your mileage may vary". Is there a decent rule of thumb for number of spindles needed to get a reasonably performing RAID 10 array? Is it reasonable to think that I could put 25-30 VMs on a single RAID 10 array of HDD's or is that crazy no matter how many spindles are in the array? What we run into is the pros and cons of the performance advantages of giving a VM a dedicated HDD or SSD vs. the leftover/empty dead/wasted space at the end of the datastore that sits empty.

I'm going between two choices, a single larger RAID 10 array with 12x 320gb, 7200rpm, 64mb cache HDD's (six spindles in the stripe) with one or two hot-spares and one or two SSDs for LSI's CacheCade caching system on an LSI 9260-16i raid controller...

or

Two RAID 10 arrays, basically break the above in half and split it between either the same RAID card OR two 8-port RAID cards.

Would I be better with one larger RAID 10 array or two smaller ones? Also, is it reasonable to think that I could put 25-30 VMs on a single array such as this? Out of the 25-30 VMs only 3-4 will get fairly active or heavy use. All the VMs have small OS HDD's about 32-64GB in size. They have much larger multi TB HDD's on remote NAS or other datastores and any "heavy use" is usually done by writing to a VM guest created 24GB RAMDRIVE at the guest OS level so overall fairly low writes to the guest OS or primary HDD.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts or feedback.

How to relocate a vm from datastore1 to datastore2

Hello everybody.

I try / want to move a vm on my ESXi 5.5 <datastore1> to <datasore2>.

I found some articles about vmkfstools but there was no nothing written about relocating a vm with all corresponding snapshots...

So my question is:

How can I move a vm from one datastore to another including all my snapshots under ESXi 5.5?

Thank you very much for your replies.

Hi Everyone,

I really need some input from you!

My company recently bought and VNX5200 SAN from EMC and...

Host Setup:

3 x HP DL360p Gen8 E2650

1 x HP 2-port 561T per host

4 x 1gbe broadcom (built in)

Switch:

1 x HP 5406zl

2 x 8 Port 10gbe Modules

2 x 24 1gbe modules

SAN:

1 x VNX5200 block iSCSI with Block iSCSI

a storage pool configured as 2 x (4+4) Raid1/0 (as per best practice)

Operating system

VMWARE Esxi 5.5 U1 Enterprise Plus (updated with all the latest patches) build 1746018

Other:

* All nic and switches are configure with jumbo frames.

     - Have been tested and confirmed working from all hosts using vmkping -s - d 8972 <ip-adress>

* Delayed Ack has been disabled on all iSCSI targets

* Drivers have all been updated to the latest available from VMware.

The issue(s):

* The sequential write performance when copying files within Harddrive A to Harddrive B within the guest operating system is around 60mb/s, I'm expecting at least 900 mb/s

     - Tested a 15 gb file on a windows server 2008 r2

* The storage vmotion performance when from SAN to a 6 disk raid 10 storage on the host-01 server is about 75 mb/s.

So what is going on?!!?!?!

Any input is much appreciated!

USB HASP keys on vSphere with High Availability

$

Hi

Please, help me to understand how to effectively use USB HASP keys on vSphere with High Availability?

For example, i have 2 servers, and i need 10 weak virtual machines to start with HASP protection.

I make cluster of two ESXi, and connect 10 USB HASP Keys to one of them.

I create 10 VM, passthrough 10 Keys to them(Main hypervisor). Suppose all works fine.

Once, Main hypervisor is dead, second starts, but it has no keys, it is fail.

Possibilities:

1. Connect Keys to vClient and passthrough them to VMs.

2. Buy small server, create third hypervisor, connect Keys to it and passthrough them to VMs on Main hypervisor.

3. Buy small server, create vCenter, connect Keys to it and passthrough them to VMs on Main hypervisor.

Is all of this scenarios possible? Is any of this scenarios normal? Is any of this scenarios reliable?

I do not see our domain on the list

Hi,

ESXI 5.5 , added to the domain via Configuration tab > Authentication Services > Properites > Join Domain, this was successful and I can see the computer account in AD.

when I try to add a permission I can only choose users from the local server, I do not see our domain on the list (when I right click on the esxi in vsphere > Add Permission > Add.. > "domain" drop down list > only (server) appears.

Any ideas ?

Thanks.

what you guys use for production vm storage?

i mean explicitly not labs / homes but something you roll in the office you don't own yourself

would you put into production some free solution with allowed commercial use (no eula violation! ) but with community only / limited vendor support?

what would be a game changer for you? say going freenas (free) -> truenas (paid) upgrade?

tnx!!

snapshot script

Hi All,

I just want to know if there is a way to write a script to take snapshot of all VM on an esxi host.

the script will be stored on the ESSXi host.

The goal is, after the snapshot, to copy the base VMDK to another Esxi host(to act like a backup).

Thank you
