vSphere 5.5 VM console access errors / MKS connection terminated by server & MKS malformed repsonse from server

$

I have just rolled out vCloud 5.5 and vSphere 5.5 and have struck an issue that re-occurs every 13 days after a physical host reboot.

When trying to connect to a VM console using either [vCD/Web Client/c# Client] I get the following errors:

1. Blank Screen

2. Occasionally MKS malformed response from server

3. Unable to connect to the MKS: Connection terminated by server

I have tried Migrating the VM to another host made no difference, restarting the management agents on the host made no difference, Rebooting the host

and migrating the VM back to host fixed the issue. Suspect a bug in vSphere 5.5 as all [3] host had identical problems. So far I have struck this issue twice and

my servers have been up for 7 days and expect the 3rd occurrence to occur 13/11/2013 ;(

Issue started 16/10 08:30am [first noticed]

Server uptime all [3] hosts 13 days

ESXi build 5.5.0 1331820

Issue re-occurred 29/10 15:00 [second time]

Server uptime all [3] hosts 13 days

ESXi build 5.5.0 1331820

Below is Syslog Server Capture when attempting a VM console connection.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have also logged the call with HP as we have software support with them and they mentioned that a number of sites have similar issues and a call has been place with VMware for further investigation

ESXi 5.5, Passthrough Video Card, Haswell Build

I am currently having difficulties with ESXi 5.5, in passing a video card on to a Windows 7 install.

Components of Note:

Motherboard - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157409

Processor - Xeon e3-1245v3 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116909

RAM - 4x8GB for 32Gb total

Intel 520 180GB SSD for Datastore

ATI Radeon 6450 Graphics Card

I have installed Windows 7 64 bit, passed on a USB controller, where I have a working mouse/keyboard setup. Installed all windows updates, then rebooted and enabled the Radeon 6450 passthrough. It seems to pass through okay, I install drivers, but the system does not recognize any monitor plugged in to the graphics card. It appears to continue to only use the virtualized display adapter.

Also, I can not get the system to boot with any more than 2 gigs of RAM when the video card is passed through.

I have also tried passing through the integrated video chip on the Haswell processor/board, but I get the same results.

If I install VMware tools with the video card passed through, I get a BSOD.

Any ideas? Below is a pic of my passthrough options from this hardware combo.

Hello,

I have ESXi 5.5. I have VM with Ubuntu server 14.04.2 LTS.

In this VM I have installed open-vm-tools (apt-get install open-vm-tools).

Now I need to remove open-vm-tools and install original vmware tools.

I try to remove and purge open-vm-tools, but on vspher web client I see this:

vmware tools: Not running, version:2147483647 (Guest Managed)

And if I try to install original vmware tools, the installation completed succesfully, but I see same message in vspher web client: Not running, version:2147483647 (Guest Managed)

Can you help me ?

Tnx

Trying to set up ignoreheadless to TRUE(from this resolution of same problem - Dell CS24 ESXi 5.5 Install Stuck "Relocating modules and starting up the kernel..." | RobWillis.info) but it doesnt have same effect for me Maybe anyone know resolution of this issue ? Thanks a lot.

Lock protecting vmdk has been lost error

Hi All,

I have a server with amd fx 8350 processor, 16 gb ram and 1 TB hard disk. I have installed esxi 5 eval edition on it and created 3 vms on it. Everything works fine but all of a sudden I cant access vsphere client. When I see it, a pop up comes up saying lock protecting the vmdk has been lost and I have only option to click ok. When I click ok, vm powers off. After power on, it might start or might not start. Again it gives weird errors if it is not starting. Please have look at the error and suggest me how to get rid of it.

When I checked on internet about this, vmware kb article says something about storage. But I have internal Hard disk of 1 TB storage.

Dear Friends,

I came across a scenario regarding thick Eager zeroed disk space occupation.

When we provision 10 GB of thick eager zeroed disk to an VM from Empty Datastore. the space consumption at storage end still says 0

When we provision 10 GB of thick eager zeroed disk to an VM from Empty Datastore. the space consumption at storage end still says 10 GB.

I have downloaded 10 GB of Lazy zeroed disk to my local machine, size of the file is 10 GB. How come a file size at vSphere level stayed 10 GB but the storage consumption 0.

By the way we are using EMC symetrix storage box

ESXi 6.0 iSCSI Challenges with Equallogic PS 6100

$

Hi All,

I just upgraded my vCenter 5.5 Windows server to vCenter 6.0. Along with that, I wiped one of my 3 Dell R710s (3 years old) to get a fresh install, since it has been upgraded since ESXi 5.0. I first started with the Dell ESXi 6 disk. Install was smooth. After setting up the host to match the configurations of my other two ESXi 5.5 hosts, I could not get my Equallogic LUNs to be displayed. Other iSCSI LUNs (Drobo for backup, Openfiler for testing) had no issues. Only Equallogic and Nexenta. Both SANs complain about "Access Denied" when the ESXi 6.0 server tries to discover the SANs.

Upon further searching, two things have changed in ESXi 6 at face value: 1., My Broadcom NetXtreme II BCM5709 iSCSi cards are now registered as QLogic. 2. My VMware Software iSCSI Adapter now has a new Initiator name.

My Equallogic SAN is running 7.x firmware. To see if the drivers made any difference, I wiped the ESXi host again and installed VMware's version instead of Dells. My iSCSI Nics are now a bit different....listed as QLogic NetXtreme II. Again, no luck on the SAN and the "access denied/unauthorized access" errors on the SANs persist.

I have made sure I am not using CHAP or and ACLs. While the Static tab for the Nexenta works (meaning it discovers all of the IQNs) the LUNs never show up. With the Equallogic, no IQNs are discovered.

I wanted to post this to see if we can get this figured out and maybe post some good info if we get a resolution. However, I do not have weeks to experiment, as I will need to roll back to vCenter 5.5 and get the ESXi host back. Any help and suggestions would be appreciated!

NIC TEAMING, LACP for Hosts

Hello,

I have a general question regarding NIC Teaming or LACP in vmware environment.

I have 3 hosts and all of them have 2 physical NICS.

I have done NIC Teaming in Windows Server 2012 R2 Machine (4 Physical NICs) and Cisco 3560G using LACP and I got 4gbps connection.

I need NIC Teaming/LACP on my ESXI 5.5 hosts to have 2gbps connection if it is possible? and if it is could you please provide the manual or site? this hosts are connected to

Cisco 3560G switch. I know how to configure from Cisco side, I just need help on ESXI. I do not need load balancing, I just need connection speed to be high.

thanks in advance! Your help would be highly appreciated!

Two ESXi not communicating

Hello,

I have two ESXi hosts running and both connected to my cable modem. I've checked firewall, network configs, etc. I attempt to ping both hosts and notice that while one is returning the ping, the other is timing out. When I attempt to ping the host from inside one of my VM's, it just times out indefinitely. If I unplug one of the hosts completely, the other is constant with replies. I'm completely lost. One host is 6.0 and the other is 5.5 if that matters any.

Can anyone assist?

Broadcom NIC and PSOD

I have a Dell Poweredge T110 that I recently acquired as a hands on learning tool for server administration and virtualization. Ive gotten it up and running with ESXi 5.5 U2 and it works just fine. But I think ot might have an issue overloading the internal NIC with multiple guests, so I installed a Broadcom 5609 dual 10/100/1000 NIC. Now ESXi wont finish loading. I installed the drivers from the VMWare site, but when it gets to "Loading bnx2 module" on the console it hangs for a second and then goes to a PSOD. With the card removed and the drivers still in place it loads fne. So Im guessing its a deiver issue. Does anyone know how to correct this, or where I can find the correct driver?

ressource pool cpu reservation

$

hi,

i am confused about the following scenario

how this works? if the VM0 having 2 vpcu is scheduled to run it will take 2 cpu core which means 4.4 GHZ, as the resource pool limit is 5GHZ so we have left 0.6GHZ for VM1 but VM1 needs 2.2 GHZ as it has 1 vcpu so in this case what happen? the 0.6 GHz is wasted?

to be more clear i will give another example

if i have a server with just 1 cpu core of 2.2 GHZ, hyper-threading is not enable, and i have 2 VMs each one of 1.1GHZ of reservation. so the 2 VMs are scheduled on the same time?

as i know the frequency is the cpu speed so i am not getting to make the relation between the virtual machine frequency (reservation) and the physical cpu speed.

Host Randomly Shuts Down With PSOD

Greetings everyone.

I am having a problem with one of my host is running VMware ESXi, 5.5.0, 2068190 image profile HP-ESXi-5.5.0-Update2-iso-5.77.3

The server is a ProLiant DL360e Gen8 That being said I am new to VMware. I have one other host that is not having this issue and that host is a HP ProLiant DL360e Gen8

VMware ESXi, 5.1.0, 1065491 Image Profile HP-ESXi-5.1.0-standard-iso

Both hosts have three VM's on it.

The issue used to happen one a week. It is now happening every two weeks. I grabbed the system logs, and I also browsed to http://<hostname or ip address>/host to see what I can find.

To be honest I am not sure which file to look at. I did look in the vpxa.log, syslog.log, sysboot.log, vmkwarning.log, vmkeventd.log as well.

Any help would be appreciated.

I did contact VMware support, however, they told me at the time (which was about a month ago) that the data was "inconclusive".

Thanks again.
