Backing up VM's using VDP or VDR in Vsphere Web Client 5.5

$

Hi -

A few questions.

Is VDR supported in the vsphere web client 5.5?

Reading the VDP documentation, it says that independent disks are not supported.  Being that our VM's in the web client are independent disks it sounds like VDP will not work, unless we set the first disk (system disk) to dependent and leave the larger disks set to independent for snapshot purposes.

Thanks.

Log files not showing New user creation

I am using ESXi 5.1 and vSphere.

I have been asked to ensure that log files showing user password changes and new user creation events are logged and available.

I have found the password change details that are logged to (auth.log located in /var/log/)

But I cannot find any details being logged when a new user is created. I have logging set to trivial. The event is shown in the lower GUI window when the user is created so I would be surprised if it is not logged.

Can anyone please point me in the correct direction?

Thank you

Hi all,

I have a problem using ReadyNAS as an iSCSI storage for my host. I can connect it, I can browse datastore - but when I'm trying to perform read/write operations on the device - some problems occurs.

What I have:

/var/log # vmware -v

VMware ESXi 5.5.0 build-2302651

/var/log # tail -f vmkernel.log

Is there anything I can do to resolve it?

Where should I store an old VM where it can easily be accessed if needed?

I have a old VM server I want to take out of our production environment that's around 1.4 TB. This server housed our old document management system and it contains millions of files. We've migrated all the files over to the new document management system but I need to hold onto the old data just in case something was missed. I figured I would just backup the old VM to an external hard drive to get it off the SAN. However, if I do need to spin up this old VM to look for data, I don't think I can mount the external drive as storage for the host correct?

Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to handle this?

Unable to add a second iSCSI Target to ESXi hosts

For some reason I am not able to add a second iSCSI target to any of my ESXi hosts. I was able to add the first one which is on the same subnet as the second one with no issues. But when I try to add the IP address of the second iSCSI target in the dynamic discovery tab and do the rescan, the iSCSI target doesn't show up in the datastores section. Does the ESXi has one iSCSI target limitation?. I have vSphere Enterprise License, so I don't think it's a license issue. Please advise on the matter. Thank you.

pxe installation successfully but reboot get operating system not found

Hello,

I used xCAT to automatically install redhat6/suse11/windows on esxi5.1 which I create following virtual machines: 20g disk datastore1=scsi, memory 2048, 2 vcpu.

I have got successfully result before, which I can install os and boot them successfully with xCAT PXE solution(xnba, which used ipxe instead of legacy pxe rom).

I dont think there has different behavior when I create virtual machines. However, I will get 'operating system not found ' issue again and again.

Once more, when I enable "failed boot recovery" at VM Setting, after 10s retry, it can boot into redhat system(I believe for other systems).

So I wanna to know the root cause. How can I fix it? I don't want to set that workaround.

I will attach my log and vmx to refer.

I have two vms, both used lsi sas controller, however, I also used lsi scsi(parallel).

Thanks,

Eugene

Identify the raw hard drive on the Virtual machine and expand the size of raw device mapping drive

I've recently given a task to expand the a drive of the virtual machine that is raw device mapped. The drive is a DAG mailbox of exchange server. Both the exchange mailbox server have 7 raw mapped lun and all are in virtual compatibility mode.

I've read that for virtual compatibility mode needs to power down the virtual machines and remove the LUN. After expand the LUN size on the storage part, add the LUN back to the virtual machines and refresh the host, finally power on the virtual machines.

How I'm able to identify which raw device LUN is the LUN that need to be expanded? Can the LUN be expanded without powering down the virtual machines and remove and re-add the raw device LUN?

The real question is: How can Iinstallsql serveron a VMthat Ihavethe bestperformace!!!

Hi guys,

I have a mission critical VM. However users keep on complaining that this vm response slowly even though the performance of this vm doesn't show any issue. The usage of the CPU, memory and network are less than 50%(max).

My boss ask me to check the IOPS. May I know how can I do that?

Best Practice Question on ip address for ESXi host

I am trying to find a document that outlines a best practice for how to ip a ESXi host.  The practice I have always used is to put the host ip address in a separate vlan from everything else.

Is anyone aware of a document that helps me with this ?

Remote Syslog configuration

I have been asked to send all ESXi Host logs to an internal syslog server at my company. After a little research it appears that this command will do it.

esxcli system syslog config set --loghost='udp://10.11.12.13:514'

Is there a way to send specific logs? I don't want to send all of the logs in /var/log if possible.

Also we are using VMwrae's  vCenter log Insight tool as well. This appears to be working properly. The ESXi host are 5.1 and 5.5

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi guys,

I am trying to upgrade my Vsphere here in my organization where i joined recently. they have a complex system here and most of the VM systems are running for production. ESXI 5.0 is presently installed on the vsphere and needs to be upgrade to 5.5 in order to bring in Networker backup software.

since its a production system i thought it would be better to test on test system before i do in the production system. i took a machine and installed win 2008 server and when i wanted to install 5.0 its not getting installed on the test machine. i have spent a lot of time doing this. now i am in a dielama what should i do. should i do dierectly on the production system or should i test it before i do it in production system.

need precious advice on this friends, i am not much well versed with the Vmware i just used to do the basic maintaince in my previous organization.

Please advice.

Thanks & Reagrds

VMotion Issues

Hello All. I recently added a new host into my cluster and I am having issues with vmotion. Currently I have a Dell PE R620 with an Intel Xeon E5-2640 and added a Dell PE R730 with an Intel Xeon E5-2643 v3. The error occurs during the compatibility check and I receive:

vmware.jpg

Does this mean that I need to use EVC in the cluster? Are the instructions sets between the two processors above causing the issue? I know this is probably straight forward but I wanted to ask in case there was a bios setting or something else that need to be changed to fix this.

The old host is 5.5.0 1746018 and the new host is 5.5.0 2068190 if that makes a difference and vCenter is 5.5.0 1945287. I also have a yellow exclamation mark on the new host but no alarms. Any ideas?

thanks!

VM Tools Memory Driver - Windows 2012R2 Driver lock

$

Im running a Windows 2012R2 VM on ESXi 5.5.0 1331820.

The VM is using hardware version 10 (ESXi 5.5 and later)

RAM in the VM is configured at 6GB

Im running into an issue where after a while Windows uses up all the RAM (showing 95%) but upon using a RAMMAP is see that 4GB is in driver locked.

I have already reviewed the documents related to this issue here

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1003470

However the option to changed the memory to unlimited always refers to hardware version 9 and below which can be accessed via the vcenter client.  With hardware level 10 we need to use Vcenter web app to manage the client machine and the option seems to be hidden somewhere.

In Vcenter web app / VM / Manage / Settings / VM Hardware / Memory

Settings are:

6144MB Memory

Shares High

Reservation 0MB

Limit Unlimted

Host Overhead 70MB

However I still run into the driver locked issue.  As a temporary work around, if i remove the memory driver from the vmware tools install i see that the driver locked issue goes away.

I also checked the Host's limits and they are all set to unlimited.

Any way to resolve this while keeping the memory driver installed?

ESXI 5.0 with Cluster Microsoft Windows 2003 Lost RDM after reboot host

Whenever I need to do maintenance on a ESXi host that has a cluster microsoft 2003 after the host is restarted all RDM disks Cluster Microsoft loses access to RDM disks and displayed with size 0 KB. Only it is possible to restore the cluster off the second Microsoft cluster node and removing and adding the RDM disks. Anyone ever had this problem?

RDM wil not show up in (Windows) Disk Mgmt

$

Hi all-

Wondering if anyone has seen anything flaky like this before with attaching an RDM to a Windows vm. Appreciate your thoughts.

Trying to attach a 500gb lun to a Windows virtual machine in physical mode, but it will not show up. I've tried a few different times, and I've seen it show up momentarily once in disk mgmt before disappearing never to be seen again.

My environment:

vCenter and every host is at ESXi 5.1.

VM was a p2v many moons ago, has existing virtual mode RDM attached

VM is 2003 SP2 Enterprise Server

What I've tried:

Created and attached RDM from EMC VNX. Everything works as planned until I try to rescan/view in os, never appears

Created and attached RDM from second EMC VNX as a test, same result.

Successfully attached original lun to different server, to narrow down issue to original vm

Refreshing storage of host where vm resides, multiple times throughout process

Rescan disk management, via gui and diskpart

Tried adding RDM to different scsi virtual device node

Refresh storage through manage paths

Checked event viewer to find error that "all paths to xxxxxxxxxx are dead", but this can't be right (in manage paths all are active, and the other lun is on the same storage array)

Rebooted server

Any idea what else I can try?
