"virtual machine disk consolidation is needed" - what to do ?

$

Hi,

I came to the company where was installed ESXi host 5.1 , and five VM inside. Using also VM Sphere client 5.1.0.

Trying to figure what's the best, and send some question about backup/replication. Tnx for the answers.

Now, i'm facing this situation. Two virtual machines, in Summary tab in Sphere client shows  "virtual machine disk consolidation is needed".

At this moment everything working good, but i did the backup today from one virtual machine. Power off one virtual machines, export OVF template from Sphere, folder of files on my external hdd. After that power on this virtual machine, everything OK.

As i can assume, size of the file is close what is populated on C parition. Partition E is almost free, second partition.

A)  Is it safe to do consolidation from sphere? VM power off or on?

B) When i check HDD from sphere, Edit Settings, it's 250Gb HDD, and it's file is 00004.vmdk.   // visible on picture i sent

C) Summary tab in Sphere, shows provisioned storage, and used storage // visible on picture i sent

D) Snaphot manager from Sphere - // visible on picture i sent

E) Picture, where we can see backup which i made today, , and on the right panel content of this VM.

Is this a valid backup file from the actual state just before the backup, because i can't relate this backup file from the content of this VM ?

What to do to prevent something bad, and run out of freee space?

Tnx for help and aswers.

not_implemented bootmodule.c:122 PSOD not after fresh install of ESXi 5.5

We have a production server that's been up and running for a month, and after a power off/on the machine now drops to a PSOD screen with the bootmodule.c:122 error as described in the KB article #2063837.  Nothing changed on the hardware or software side, and the server is remote so doing a reinstall of ESXi is troublesome.  I'm looking to see if there are any other causes for this error besides a "bad install" (which worked fine for a month including multiple reboots while bringing the machine into production) - I'm also concerned about this randomly happening again down the road.  Does anyone have experience with this error with a production server, and not directly after an install?

Thank you.

Hi,

does anyone have an insight into both of these certifications? I will be sitting an one of the exams in Feb to obtain one of the certs but i'm not sure which one to take.... My roles with clients involve both design and administration and so the dilema, is there any reason to take one over the other, are either eaiser..

Thanks

DirectPath I/O support for Haswell Lynx Point SATA AHCI controller

Hi,

Im building a new ESXi 5.5 system on Asus H87i-itx board with Intel i5 Haswell 4670T chip. Mainboard and CPU both support VT-d / DirectPath I/O so far as I can tell, but I have a problem.

In ESXi I can see most devices available for DirectPath I/O passthrough such as Video, Audio, NIC and USB controller, everything is available for DirectPath I/O passthrough except for Lynx Point SATA AHCI controller.

Can anybody help diagnose why the SATA controller is missing, and steps for more detailed debugging ?

Previous Cougar Point AHCI SATA controller is supported in ESXi so why not Lynx Point.

Also, Lynx Point SATA AHCI controller is listed on VMware HCL page here:

VMware Compatibility Guide: I/O Device Search   Intel "Lynx Point" Series Chipset 6-Port SATA AHCI  8086:8c02

Strange thing is my ESXi can see the Lynx Point SATA AHCI controller in Storage Adaptors correctly, showing 6 x VMHBA listed, so why does it not appear in passthrough, and not even greyed out ?

DirectPath3.png

Is there any extra diagnostic I can do please tell me ?

Would like to avoid doing physical raw mapping (rdm) if possible, DirectPath I/O Passthrough would be much nicer method. :-)

Network Health Monitor Status Unknown

While using the new vSphere 5.1 Web Client, I have got a vCenter 5.1 with Distributed Network Switches. I have enabled "VLAN and MTU health check" and "Teaming and failover health check". However, when looking at the "Status" columns, nearly all show a status of "Unknown" for all the Hosts. All my Hosts are vSphere 5.1.

I'd appreciate any advice.

Strange Readings From esxtop DAVG KAVG

I have been scratching my head over this and show has Dell and vmware Support. When I execute esxtop u I get - 18446744073709552.00 it fluctuates between that and another number and through multiple LUNS.  I have updated all drivers/firmware including SAN\Server\Vmware..... Has anyone ever seen anything like this? I am running ESXI 5.5.  I am not noticing any latency to my storage unit " according to Dell Headquarters  ". However I am noticing some vcenter latency loading up vcenter via web browser and the Client.

The vmware tech stated that it was a storage unit issue so I contacted dell and they went through the logs with a fine tooth comb. We had my SAN switches inspected my PS6100E and my HP2920 Network Switches everything checks out to be working fine.

I am thinking it is a bug in the vmware OS.

Has anyone seen this before or had this same issue? I just want to confirm this isnt a issue that will cause a big problem down there road!

How can I setup PCI passthrough for my HighPoint 1144A USB 3.0 card under ESXi 5.1?

I have an Apple Mac Pro (MacPro5,1) running VMware ESXi 5.1.0 (799733) with a HighPoint RocketU 1144A USB 3.0 PCI-express card installed. Given that VMware ESXi 5.1 doesn't support USB 3.0 for host-attached devices, I am trying to attach the USB 3.0 PCIe card to a virtual machine using DirectPath I/O PCI passthrough.

It took me a number of different configurations, but I finally managed to configure the HighPoint RocketU 1144A USB 3.0 PCI Express card for DitectPath passthrough:

DirectPath Configuration Screenshot

DirectPath Status Screenshot

The first few times I tried, after rebooting I still received the "The host needs to be rebooted to apply configuration changes" warning, even after rebooting the host. Finally I found that by moving the USB 3.0 card to the 3rd PCIe slot, I was able to get the passthrough configuration to stick.

I also note that the device shows up as a "ASMedia Technology Inc. ASM1042 SuperSpeed USB Host Controller" when it actually should have 4xASM1042 chips on it. I also had to pass-through the PLX Technology, Inc PEX 8609 8-lane, 8-Port PCI Express Gen 2 Switch to make the configuration changes stick.

Now, however, I am stuck trying to attach the ASMedia Technology ASM1042 device to a FreeBSD (FreeNAS) virtual machine. When I add the device as a PCI passthrough device to the virtual machine, I am unable to power on the virtual machine:

VM Power On Error Screencapture

VMware ESX unrecoverable error: (vcpu-0) PCIPassthruChangeIntrSettings: 09:00.1 failed to register interrupt (error code 195887105)

I tried passing through only the ASMedia ASM1042, only the PLX PEX 8609, and both the two devices. None of these three configurations worked.

Googling for that error code led me to this forum post in German which by using Google Translate I was able to extract the following information:

You have to disable MSI and forcing the card to get a INTx interrupt access, we go. Can you read here on page 5. http: / / www.vmware.com/pdf/vsp_4_vmdirectpath_host.pdf you following parameters have to manually add to your VM config: pciPassthru0.msiEnabled = "FALSE" I had to run the whole thing also virtualisert to ESXi and then I walked the closed system of ESXi but with the time on your nerves because you problems but not actually really engage. can I have now migrated to KVM (Proxmox VE) where the rich and Cine S2 V5.5 also successful at the next VM (with MSI). The whole runs super stable.

Following those instructions I added

pciPassthru0.msiEnabled = "FALSE" pciPassthru1.msiEnabled = "FALSE"

to my .vmx file, and this did enable me to boot the FreeBSD 8.3 (FreeNAS 8.3.1) VM... however the virtual machine hung at boot here:

FreeBSD Hang Screencapture

I expect that I need to make some other change. The VMware PDF document they linked to describes "linked devices", and I expect there's some sort of linking going on whereby the 4xASM1042 chips (because the 4 ports on the USB 3.0 card each have their own channel) need to be linked through the switch... or something... but I am unsure of technically what is going on or how to proceed.

How can I resolve these problems and get passthru working for the HighPoint 1144A USB 3.0 card under EXSi 5.1?

ESXi 5.5 Cannot connect to Management Network

Hello Everybody,

I am brand new to VMWare - just installed ESXi 5.5 on two blade servers and trying to configure them and connect them to VSphere client however I am experiencing issues with the network connectivity. Doesn't matter what configuration I set up for management network I am not able to ping the servers or ping any of the other machines on my network. My network is in the 192.168.1.x range and there is DHCP server running. If I configure ESXi to use DHCP I see error that it couldn't connect to the DHCP server. If I configure it to use static IP I am still not able to ping any other machines.

I also tried using 10.1.0.x network by configuring VM with dual adapter but this one didn't work either.

Machines are working fine because if I install Windows or Linux on them they are able to connect to the network. Are there any specifics for configuring the management network on ESXi hosts?

Both machines are experiencing the same issue. Logs do not yield any useful information.

Best,

Toddy

Anyone use SNMP monitoring specifically with ESXi?

I'm looking at all options of monitoring within VMware. We have vCops and vCenter. Just trying to understand all options and get a better feel. vCops is a monster to learn and becoming more clear the more I use it. We currently use HP hardware and a custom ISO to build servers. I dread using 3rd party add-ons to hardware and wonder what built-in SNMP monitoring offers. I always like to ask people in the community their feedback on something like this. It's interesting to here from others. Secondly, at home I run a couple stand-alone desktops with the free VMware hypervisor. It rocks! I setup openNMS and wanted to monitor my home machines. I like to tinker discovering obscure features like SNMP. Monitoring is a passion of mine :) I've never used openNMS, I discovered I could import the VMware mibs. I hope to blog my experiences later on.

Hi Friends,

I have created to (Test Environment)  Two ESXi named mu-esxi-host1 and mu-esxi-host2 both esxi are 5.1. Inside VM are created. my Domain is mycompany.com. ADDS Server running in mu-esxi-host1. In this Test Environment I have implemented vCenter Server too. vCenter Server is Windows Base.  I am getting below error. If I directly Console to mu-esxi-host1 and host2 and access to VM, I don't face any issue but if I accessing VM's from vCenter Server using vSphere Client, I am getting below error but strange is that if I accessing VM's using vCenter Web Client I have to just refresh that page and error goes off.

my DNS and AD is working fine, my host name is resolving properly.

I am getting said Error frequently MKS Error.jpg

vFRM, add capacity fails with Device or Resource busy

$

Hi All,

First posting here. I am trying to configure a vFlash resource through the webclient. The process of adding capacity ends with a green checkmark next to the Task, But selecting the task shows:

Task Details:
Name:configureVFlashResourceEx
Startzeit:Jan 5, 2015 10:49:57 AM
Zeit der Fertigstellung:Jan 5, 2015 10:50:07 AM

Aufgaben-ID:Task
Abbrechbar:false
Abgebrochen:false
Beschreibungs-ID:host.VFlashManager.configureVFlashResourceEx

And obviously nothing is created

But the kernel log shows (amongst other lines) :

2015-01-05T10:50:02.100Z [39880B70 error 'Hostsvc.VFlashManager' user=vpxuser] GetVffsInVFlashResource: VFFS volume [54185628-11226866-18e8-40f2e983dbe0] does not exist.

Also the hostd.log shows: (from a nother attempt , hance the timestamp difference)

2015-01-05T11:37:32.054Z [37FC2B70 verbose 'Hostsvc.FSVolumeProvider' user=vpxuser] LookupVffs: Cannot find VFFS volume with Uuid 54185628-11226866-18e8-40f2e983dbe0

These errors keep beeing added to the hostd.log even when not attemting to create a vFlash Resource !!

I get the feeling that an initial attempt failed ( not sure) and the UUID/Volume is somewhere left in the configuration.

I have 4 more esxi hosts with exactly the same hardware versions etc., where this issue does not occur and a vFlash resource has easily been created through the webclient.

Should I clean something and if yes , where ?

Problem with Time Protocol in ESXi 5.1.0 1065491

I am having issues with the time on my ESXi 5.1 (1065491) VMware farm. The farm consists of three separate physical servers (2 - Dell PowerEdge 1950, 1 - Dell PowerEdge 2950). The Virtual Center Server is a VM on the farm housed on ESXi2, it displays the correct time as well as the SQL Server which is also a VM housed on ESXi3. There are no VMs on ESXi1 currently.

The time keeps jumping 4 days and 3 hours into the past no matter what I do. I am using NTP but still the time skews. I change it manually with the following commands:

hwclock -d 01/05/2015 -t 14:06:00

esxcli system time set -y 2015 -M 01 -d 05 -H 14 -m 06 -s 00

esxcli hardware clock set -y 2015 -M 01 -d 05 -H 14 -m 06 -s 00

It then shows the correct time in vSphere Client then between 30 secs to 1 min it reverts back to the past. Time when it reverts displays 01/01/2015 06:05 on all three servers. It shows that NTP Client is running and the correct NTP servers are listed.

The /etc/ntp.conf looks like this:

restrict default kod nomodify notrap nopeer

restrict 127.0.0.1

server ##.##.##.##

server ##.##.##.##

driftfile /etc/ntp.drift

Where ##.##.##.## is the internal IP addresses of our NTP servers. The /etc/ntp.drift looks like this:

~ # cat /etc/ntp.drift

44.046

In Configuration => Software => Security Profile => Firewall Properties, SSH Server, SSH Client, and NTP Client are enabled.

In Configuration => Software => Security Profile => Services Properties, NTP Daemon and SSH are running.

I am at a loss...

High Disk I/O on the local host datastore

$

Hi,

We seem to be having issues with our VM's suddenly running slower than normal. As far as I am aware this has only been an issue since we upgraded to VMware 5.5 Update 2 a couple of weeks ago from 5.5 Update 1. I can see using VCOPS that some of the hosts have very high I/O on the local datastores. The thing is that no VM's are on these datastores as they all live on the SAN. I have increased how many IOPS each disk has access to on a couple of the important servers which seems to have improved the situation. When I was troubleshooting I also moved a VM from a host that had high I/O to a host with lower I/O but there was no change. Has anyone come across this before?

Each host is running on a HP BL460 G7 on a HP C7000.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Graham
