how to download/install Plug-in for VMware-Workbench-3.0.0.0-1202816 for esxi 5.5

Hi,

We are doing VMware hardware certification with ESXi 5.5. We installed VMware-Workbench-3.0.0.0-1202816, however it asks to install plug-in before we move further. We search in ESXi documents but could not find the relevant information to install plug-in for VMware-Workbench-3.0.0.0-1202816.

Could we get the procedure to install the plug-in for VMware-Workbench-3.0.0.0-1202816 (ESXi 5.5)?

Thanks,

Raghav

ESXi 5.1 Installer Hangs at "loading /sata_sat.v01"

When using the latest Cisco customized install ISO for ESXi 5.1 Update 1 on my B200 M3 blades, if I boot from a USB drive that has had the ISO transferred to it the installer boot hangs at  "loading /sata_sat.v01" This happens if mounted through the KVM or using a dongle plugged directly into the blade.

If I mount the ISO using the KVM, it boots fine.

If I use the non-Cisco ISO, it works fine no matter what.

I can remove the module in question from the BOOT.CFG file on the USB stick, but then the installer for ESXi fails at 59% with an error relating to accessing the USB drive (no surprise there).

I've tried various USB Legacy Support modes in the BIOS of the blade as follows:

Enabled: Results in the condition described above

Disabled: Unable to boot from KVM-mounted USB. Not available in boot menu.

Auto: Results in the condition described above.

Any ideas?

Hi together,

we just installed ESXi Server Version 5.

As Guest System we installed Centos 6 64Bit + VMWare tools.

After installation we tried to use VNC to access the Centos GNOME Desktop.

Without success. We got a Black Screen or if we use twm we got a windowxs with a terminal windows, but we were unable to use the keyboard. The mouse moves works finde, but MouseCliecks are also not provieded.

When uninstalling VMWare Tools everything works fine.

Installing VMWareTools again and it doesnt work again.

We tried to reproduce the problem with a new Installation. With success.

- Install Centos 6 64Bit. "Base Server" + "Gnome Desktop"

- Start vncserver. Set a password.

- Connect via VNC

Every Thing works fine.

- Install VMWare tools

- Reboot System

- Start vncserver

- Connect via VNC

VNC does not work correctly (Black Screen or Terminal windoe, but no keyboard or mouse inputs possible)

The VNC Logfile includes the follwoing line:

Xlib: extension "VMWARE_CTRL" missing on Display ":2:0"

Can somebody help us ?

Is this issue known?

Willl there be a VMWare Tools Patch ?

We already tried the newest VMWareTools from VMWareTools Repository without success.

Thank you

Alex

Hi Guys,

We're trying to test Windows Server 2012 R2 Preview on out vSphere enrionment (Latest 5.1 U1 with updates).
Although it is not supported, we're trying to get it to work.

So:

1. Windows Server 2012 R2 (Hardware version 9) succesfully installed.

2. In order to sysprep, a problematic schedule task is disabled

According to Microsoft :

Release Notes: Important Issues in Windows Server 2012 R2 Preview

3. Converting to template.

4. Tryhing to deploy from template using a basic custom spec (Evaluation product key inside).

What happens?

* The server is powered on and the console shows Windows' request to change the Administrator's password.

* Sysprep Generalize phaze failed with the following error:

08 21:03:31, Error [0x0f0073] SYSPRP RunExternalDlls:Not running DLLs; either the machine is in an invalid state or we couldn't

ESXi 5.1 Update 1 crashing randomly with purple screen #PF Exception 14

Hi,

We are having occasional crashes on our VMware ESXi 5.1 Update 1 hosts.

The host will crash and then all vm's are powered up on the surviving hosts

The purple screen of death displays the following:

#PF Exception 14 in world 8199:idle7 (See attached image for more detail)

vmcluster21.JPG

I've exported the logs and had a look through the vmkernel logs but cannot seem to see anything that really pops out, any ideas ?

I've read around on the internet and forums with others having this issue and it appears that on previous esxi version it was an issue and vmware released a patch. However with the latest version I don't seem to find too much information

E1000 virtual nic on Win 2003 R2 causing PSOD on ESXi 5.1 (PF Exception 14)

$

Hello,

we migrated a VM running 2003 R2 64 bit from Hyper-V to ESXi 5.1 (build 1117900) using VMware Converter for V2V migration, which configured an Intel E1000 as NIC card (with Microsoft driver inside the VM)

The migration went smooth and machine run fine for more than a month, but will little stress conditions.

As soon as the machine started being stressed a bit, with some network transfers, we started getting PSOD as follows on the ESX node:

psod.png

After some reading in forums where this issue seemed more related to vmxnet3 than to e1000 (in fact many suggesting to go for e1000 ...), we did the following as per some findings around:

1) Upgraded ESXi 5.1 to latest build (1157734, this was done without any specific indication this could sort the issue out)

2) Installed Intel drivers instead of Microsoft ones (Intel Pro Set)

3) Disabled TCP offloading in Intel Drivers.

I will let you know if node will run more stable, but in the mean time I am asking for suggestions, if any.

Unfortunately no ESX kernel dump was there so it is useless to open a call to VMware at present..

Any ideas of how to correct this issue?

RSA Authentication Appliance virtual hardware requirements

I am about to deploy two RSA appliacnes. the vendor suggests 8GB of RAM 2 CPU and 100GB of disk. this seems like a bit of overkill to me. I was wondering if others have had success deploying these appliances with less hardware assigned to them.

thanks

How do you decide to go to the next version (5.5)?

Hi

Current version: 4.1

Production environment, can't afford issues and only very little downtime.

When would you feel confident with ESXi 5.5 ?

I can't find a lot of issues mentioned here in the community. Even though vCenter Server has released the first minor update, there is still none for ESXi 5.5.

Is there a way to remove the 2 serial and 1 parallel port(s) that automaticly get put on VMs?

With Version Bios VMs you could go into the Bios and disable them and the floppy controler, but on EFI VM's there isn't such an option.

Moving protected VMs to another placeholder datastore ?

Hi,

How do you move protected VMs  to another placeholder datastore ?

Within 'Site Recovery' I created a new placeholder datastore, and now I want to move the protected VMs to this new placeholder datastore, meaning the Placeholder VM File.

Normally removing the protection and the reconfiguring the protection went fine on one protection group but on another protection group they stay on the old placeholder datastore.

Anyone any ideas ?

Cluster Configuration Best Practices Question

$

0

I'm not sure if this is the proper board to post this question but I could not find a more suitable one.

Obviously when building out an HA cluster you want the hardware specs (memory, cpu, etc) to be the same, or at least very similar. I have a cluster that consists of HP servers and I want to add more memory in each of the hosts. 3 of the hosts are Gen 7 servers the others are Gen 8. The Gen 7' hardware (memory, cpu) specs are all the same. The Gen 8 specs are all the same and VERY close to the same as the Gen 7 hosts - the only differences is the speed of the memory. 1333 MHz in the Gen 7 and 1666 MHz in the Gen 8s. The Gen 7's have about 20GB less memory than the Gen 8's and the  processors are 2.6 and 2.5 GHz. But, they cluster is balanced and have no issues there.

Here is my question, and this is based on pricing, I can upgrade the memory in my Gen 7 hosts for dirt cheap but they are 1066 MHz vs the 1333 that are in there now (all DIMMS will be replaced). The memory in the Gen 8's will just be in addition to what is already there and they will remain 1666 MHz. Is the big difference in speed (from 1333 to 1066 MHz) a possible issue? Could that cause a unbalanced cluster? Or would it really just be an issue if the CPU and Memory capacity is vastly different?
