ESXi 5.1 host shut downs unexpectedly

Hi all,

I'm running a ESXi 5.1 host, with only one windows server 2012 VM in trial mode and other WHS2008

I was doing some initial configs on the 2012 server VM when the host shut down! The host was running fine for some days, since the last time (first) it shut down.

The host is a recently installed ESXi 5.1 on a USB stick.

Hardware:

Asus server RS500

1x intel 5504

12GB corsair

Adaptec 6805e with adaptec drivers

(I also noticed that I don't have the temp and fans sensors reading on the ESX health check)

I was looking on the logs, but don't understand some of the log information, but I found this at the time it shutdown:

(please tell me what data in which log files do you need)

Any help will be apreciated

Thanks

Proxy.xml not found in ESXi 5.1

Hello,

I'm trying to change the ports for HTTP and HTTPS connectivity for the vSphere client, but proxy.xml is nowhere to be found on my ESXi host.

Any ideeas?

Regards,

ESXi Upgrade to 5.5 with CLI - is this the correct command?

I am planning an upgrade from ESXi 5.1 to ESXi 5.5 after updating vCenter to 5.5.

I am looking at using CLI so I can remote ssh to the ESXi and run the update.

Once I copy the depot zip file to the ESXi Datastore, is the following command the correct format?

esxcli software profile update--depot= /vmfs/volumes/datastore/VMware-ESXi-5.5.0-1331820-depot.zip  --profile= ESXi-5.5.0-1331820-standard

[ESXi 5.5] AD Authentication stops working after upgrading Domain Controller to 2012 R2

As the title suggests..

I had this working perfectly when my DC was running 2012 RTM,

It showed the DC as being trusted and I could see all my AD groups, and SSO was working correctly

Today, I upgraded said DC to 2012 R2, shortly after I got kicked out of vSphere and it refused to let me back in using my AD account

When I rechecked my Authentication settings, I noticed that the Trusted Domain Controllers setting was "--"

I disjoined from the domain and added it back again to no avail. The trusted DC is still showing blank and SSO still does not work.

Has anyone else found this with 2012 R2?

Multiple View 5.2 Connection Servers

I'm setting up new 5.2 View servers, with 5.1 when I setup connection servers they automatically showed up for each other so when I went to the connection servers tab under view configuration I could see both connection servers. However in my new 5.2 environment after I installed the second connection server it did not start communicating with the first connection server. So at this point they are two completely separate connection servers. I'm wondering if I did something wrong or if 5.2 is just different than 5.1.

Moving VM to Stand Alone Host - 5.1

Hello everyone:

I need to move a few guests out of a Host/iSCSI cluster to a stand alone host and the methods we've tried take about an hour per guest (60GB VM). Is that normal? What is the best way to do this? We've tried to do a cold migration then do a Storage vMotion as well as shutting it down and copying the VM folder down through the vSphere client and it take a significant amount of time.

Thanks in advance,

M

About role and permission on vsphere 5.1

Hi guys,

i have a vcenter 5.1 and a ESX farm 5.1 with about 10 host.

I need to automate the vm provisioning also to other group that doesnt have a administrative privilage on ESX using template.

So i need that this group during the vm provisionig can modify e vm configuration (more ram or cpu) but don't want that this group con chang ethe configuration after create the vm (for example after some day)

The question is:

can i set a permission/configuration ad-hoc for permit to modify cap/ram on vm only during provisiong step ?

Thanks in advance.

Upgraded from ESX 5.1 to 5.5, now I cant connect to it.

Building a new server!

Hello,

I'm in the process of building a new server and am looking to use the free VMware ESXi 5.1 (as it is what is supported for this server model). I already have a server picked out (as I have a type of credit with Lenovo to buy a box at a  highly discounted rate).

Here are the specs:

Lenovo ThinkServer RD630 2579 - Xeon E5-2640 2.5 GHz

Intel Xeon E5-2640 / 2.5 GHz processor

Two total processors as above.

Lenovo memory - 8 GB - DIMM 240-pin - DDR3 x8 = 64GB

Lenovo hard drive - 2 TB - SATA-600 x6 = 12TB at RAID10 config

Intel Gigabit ET Dual Port Server Adapter - network adapter

My plan for this machine is to virtualize 5+ physical aging servers using the vm converter then bring them into this new machine.

So I'm wondering what sort of limitations will I run into, what I can expect, etc? This is for a SMB.

I've done this before but on a much smaller scale....

Any input or information will help!

Thanks!

Boot to USB stick or SD card?

Which is better to boot from/run off of, a USB stick or a SD card?

Windows Server 2012 guests and EFI firmware

Hi,

When creating a Windows Server 2012 guest in vSphere 5.1 (using hardware version 9), vCenter would automatically set the guest to use EFI firmware.  This was the default and I left it that way.

Now in vSphere 5.5 when creating a Windows Server 2012 guest (using hardware version 9 or 10) the default has reverted back to using BIOS.

Is there a reason for this change?  I can't find it documented anywhere.  I am not sure whether I should manually choose EFI so that all my Windows Server 2012 guests are consistent or whether VMware changed the default back to BIOS because there are problems using EFI.

Is there an explanation for why VMware made this change?

Cheers,

David

Install VMware ESXi 5.5.0 issue on HP ProLiant DL380p Gen8

Hello

Are there any experts who have experience on installing ESXi 5.5.0 on HP ProLiant DL380p Gen8 Server?

We got the stuck at loading lsi_mr3.v00, the installation process cannot be continue...

We are using the bootable USB to install it. seems not the USB issue as we've tried several USBs and got the same issue.

We have also applied the HP_Service_Pack_for_Proliant_2013.09.0-0_744345-001_spp_2013.09.0-SPP2013090.2013_0830.30.iso to update the server fireware but still failed as before.

We are using both the VMware-ESXi-5.5.0-1331820-HP-5.71.3-Sep2013.iso and VMware-EXSIVMvisor-Installer-5.5.0-1331820.x86_64.iso to make the bootable USB, both have the same issue

Could you please help us with that?

ESXi 5 partitions

Hi,

I am wondering whether someone may answer my question. How to determine where is ESXi 5 operating system installed. How do we search for ESXi partitions.

Sometimes we boot ESXi from USB and that is easy find but on some servers there are two datastores and how do i see ESXi partitions. This is most important when updating to a new version.

For example if I have two local datastores no boot from USB how do i determine where ESXi is installed

lsi 9211-8i it, pci passthrough won't let vm boot when set with boot firmware efi?

i've got an ibm m1115 flashed to the lsi 9211-8i it firmware

running esxi 5.1u1

i've setup pci passthrough on two controllers, the above mentioned and an older lsi 3081e-r which has been flashed to it mode

one thing to note is that the lsi 9211-8i uses mpt2sas drivers whereas the 3081e-r uses mptsas drivers in esxi

it appears whilst the 3081e-r controller will passthrough to a vm fine when set with boot firmware to be efi

the 9211-8i doesn't let me start the vm at all, i can't even force it to the efi setup

that being said if i passthrough the 9211-8i to a vm which has the boot firmware set to bios it functions as it should

has anyone come across this problem before? unfortunately the vm's require efi so going moving to a bios option is not an option

some additional specs of the whitebox if it matters:

asus p8z77-v pro

i7 2600

lsi 9211-8i in ir mode(used to run raid1 ssd's for the datastore)

lsi 9211-8i in it mode

lsi 3081e-r in it mode

clean install of esxi 5.1u1

update;

dug around the events a bit looks like it returns an error when i add the pci passthrough:

Warning message from localhost.localdomain: No operating system was found. If you have an operating system installation disc, you can insert the disc into the system's CD-ROM drive and restart the virtual machine.

only seems to give that error on select vm's, tested it on one setup for windows and it doesn't spit an error but still doesn't start

remove the controller and it boots straight into the os

Changing vmotion IP address on running system

Hi -

What steps are needed to migrate our VMkernel IP addresses to a new network? This is for a running cluster.

Switches are not vSwitches (distributed). I have 3 ESXi 5.5 hosts.

Primarily I am concerned about impact on running services etc.

Thanks.

Multiple host disconnects with "failed to crossdup fd xxx" errors in vmkernel.log

I lost two hosts in my ESXi 5.0 enterprise cluster a few days ago, and found the solution to a related issue in this thread here: https://communities.vmware.com/thread/464597

However, now another host in that same cluster has the same problem - making two blades and one physical server, all in the same cluster, all on ESXi 5.0 running the standard VMWare build that have gone down within a matter of a few days.

vmkernel.log on each of the offending hosts is full of this:

Once that happens, the host cannot be reconnected to the cluster until I make the vpxa.cfg edits in the thread I linked above. Obviously this not an acceptable solution, because the host is down until I am around to make the edits, restart the services and reconnect the host.

Why is this happening, and how can I further troubleshoot it?

ESXi 5.5 HCL for Supermicro server

Hi Everyone,

I am planning on buying a Supermicro server to run ESXi 5.5 on:

1027R-WRF

http://www.supermicro.com/products/system/1U/1027/SYS-1027R-WRF.cfm

However on the HCL it does not show ESXi 5.5 compatibility yet for this server. Is it because ESXi 5.5 is too new? It shows ESXi compatibility for ALL other versions.

Similarly, there are some Supermicro servers that ONLY show compatibility with ESXi 5.5. Like the

SYS-1027R-WRFT+

Supermicro | Products | SuperServers | 1U | 1027R-WRFT+

AND

SYS-6017R-TDF

Supermicro | Products | SuperServers | 1U | 6017R-TDF

But the difference between these servers (ESXi 5.5 and ESXi 5.1 servers) is almost negligible. Any advice?

Also how stable has everyone seen ESXi 5.5 be? I am planning on running 2xE5-2690v2 Processors so I want to use the ESXi 5.5 release so I am not limited to how many vCPUs I can allocate to my VMs. But reliability to me is also a concern since this release is so new. What would you recommend?

Thanks

Virtualizing a Software Firewall fails to connect to Public Nic Card

Hello:

We are working on virtualizing our software FIREWALL for DR purposes. I am having a huge problem!

The ESXI 5.0 Server has 2 NIC cards. One NIC card cable runs from the Ethernet port of the Verizon ONT to the ESXI server. The other Ethernet cable runs from the ESXI server to the internal network via a switch (private). This setup is similar to the unvirtualized setup.

The problem we are having is the virtualized firewall cannot ping outside the internal network even though a public ip is assigned in the software firewall setup. I can ping any live address on the internal network. I noticed the light on the Verizon ONT is not "On" when the cable is connected to the Esxi Box. I also noticed only the Private Network Card and it's IP appears when I run the command:  esxcli network ip interface ipv4 get.

So the software firewall does not see the network card. The esxi server does not see the network card via: esxcli network ip interface ipv4 get

I'm open for suggestions. What are the recommended steps from this point on?
