Can I protect/move VMkernel Adapter behind VM-based UTM (Unified Threat Management)
Can I protect/move VMkernel Adapter behind VM-based UTM (Unified Threat Management)
For example:
dSwitch A (port group: WAN) with uplink
dSwitch B (port group: LAN + Mgmt) NO uplink
Make the VM-based UTM has 2 vNICs (LAN and WAN)
and let other VMs in dSwitch B (LAN),
and make the VMkernel move into port group Mgmt in dSwitch B,
Question:
- I assume this would protect the VMkernel interface behind the UTM?
- What to do If I want to protect all various part of ESXi 5.5 behind VM-based UTM which running in the same host?
Thank you very much,
ESXi 5.5 - Removing Snapshot 99% - Now VM is invalid
Every 2s: ls -luth | grep -E "delta|flat|sesparse" |
-rw------- | 1 root | root | 404.0K Aug 11 18:03 CAGE-GESRV04 (Exchange)-000001-delta.vmdk |
-rw------- | 1 root | root | 24.0K Aug 11 18:03 CAGE-GESRV04 (Exchange)_1-000001-delta.vmdk |
-rw------- | 1 root | root | 164.0K Aug 11 18:03 CAGE-GESRV04.gage.com (Exchange)-000001-delta.vmdk |
-rw------- | 1 root | root | 200.0G Aug 11 18:02 CAGE-GESRV04 (Exchange)-flat.vmdk |
-rw------- | 1 root | root | 10.0G Aug 11 18:02 CAGE-GESRV04 (Exchange)_1-flat.vmdk |
-rw------- | 1 root | root | 80.0G Aug 11 18:02 CAGE-GESRV04.gage.com (Exchange)-flat.vmdk |
Multiple ESXI 5.5 Host intermitant lock ups
Hi,
First question posted on VMware communities so here goes
We have the below issue in our environment. This happens at 2 different
sites with similar setups. However we have 10 hosts at one site where this does
not happen. The only difference is FibreChannel.
HOSTS
10 HP BLADE Hosts at Site A connected to HP 3PAR 7200 via HP ISCSI
Switches. Latest ESXI 5.5 OS with the latest HP SPP firmware 2017. interment
lockups
8 HP BLADE Hosts at Site B connected to HP 3PAR 7200 via HP
ISCSI Switches. Latest ESXI 5.5 OS with the latest HP SPP firmware 2017.
interment lockups
10 HP BLADE Hosts at Site A connected to HP 3PAR 7200 via FC. Latest
ESXI 5.5 OS with the latest HP SPP firmware 2017. (No issues with these hosts)
PROBLEM
Problem happens at both sites at least once a week sometimes 2 times a week.
We will either spot the Host shows disconnected in the vcenter or we will
receive calls advising various systems are failing. At which point we determine
all the virtual servers hosting the systems are on the same host and a console
connection to the VM's cannot be made. If you open a console it either errors
or just stays at black screen. SSH is not enabled SECURITY ! so we ILO to the
hosts and try to login.
We are usually able to type the login credentials but that's it, its a
miracle if you can get to the menus and if you can the host will eventually
stop responding. You can view the scrolling log ALT F1. By this point we have
only ever once recovered to point we can migrate vms and shut the host down
cleanly. This happened when we had 4 hosts 2 at each site go not responding. We
were able to get to some of the vm’s so we started to shut them down. As we
were shutting down the last 2 everything came back to life. The ESXI hosts at
the ILO screen were showing HOSTD Errors on various CPU’s.
Every other time we have had this issue we have been unable to remote to the
VMs and shut them down. Leaving us with having to button the host (Power it
off). HA kicks in and powers the VM’s up on other hosts just fine but there are
obviously in clean reboots.
This has been happening for a while and a call was logged with VMWARE and HP
etc. the fault Is intermittent and happens at all different times, has affected
all hosts and the majority of VM’s.
There is never an easy fix and we always have to button the host. The only
thing I have found in the logs is regarding LUN Latency.
FIXES –
Tried rebooting the hosts periodically – No joy happened a day after the reboot.
HP VMWARE suggested upgrading VMware 5.1 (Which we were running at the time)
We upgraded both vCenters, all ESXI hosts to the latest vCenter and esxi
version, and patched etc, we also upgraded the blades to the latest 2017 SPP. The issue happened a day later
HP VMWARE – Found something in one of the ESXI logs relating to the SD card.
We were asked about the size of the SD cards (4GB) and HP advised they were not
part of the standard spec. (Even though HP supplied the blades). HP advised to
upgrade to 8GB cards. We installed 8GB SD cards in all the hosts (18 of them).
The process was – Backup Config using power cli. Install SD card, install ESXI,
Restore config, patch. That was one week
ago, and we had a host failure on Saturday.
HP 3PAR TEAM – Could not find any issues with the storage system at either
site. In any of the logs.
Tried using a HARD ISCSI Initiator – Same issue.
We have 10 other host that have the same ESXI and HP SPP etc but use Fibre
Channel and have never had an issue like this. They were installed at a similar
time.
I am posting here to see if anyone else has come across this issue. It is my
feeling that this is a storage / iscsi issue but HP VMware have not confirmed
this.
Keep seeing these in the logs. just before it is powered off.

The case is still being investigated by VMware.
What is required on ESXi 5.5 CLI to run scripts
I want to run a script to to check for hardware failure, but when I create the script using vi and I type #chmod +x script.sh, and #./script.sh I receive "./script.sh: not found."
My guess ESXi 5.5 is not fully bash shell, therefore all Linux commands will not run. What program do I need to install so I can run scripts on ESXi CLI?
Thank you for your time.
ESXI 5.0 host not detecting USB Keyboard and Mouse
Keyboard and mouse works for BIOS during POST without any issue. But as soon as VMware loads the light on keyboard gets turned off and nothing works. Mouse also stops responding.
Host can be accessed remotely and there are no other errors/other issues. Any help is appreciated as I cant find any online resources for same. Thanks.
IP HASH and Ether Channels
Afternoon guys , I require some help with a client we inherited .
We know if you want to use IP hashing , you should have Ether-Channel configured Up steam , with LACP as an optional bit of intelligence .
The large infrastructure we inherited has both IP hash , and Route based on Originating port set op portgroups
One vDS , two Uplinks per IBM FLEX ESXI host with roughly 50% of port groups on IP and the rest on Port ID
How is it even working ?
As my Network guys confirmed we don't have Ether Chanel set up ?
Port ID requires that only old school trunking is done
IP hash requires Ether Channel
So how do they both co exist on shared uplinks , shared BLADE IO modules , TOR and Core Switch ?
I need to upgrade to vSphere 6 , so basically and I trying to come up with the best config there
For now , I think making sure there are no Ether Channels , and using LBT is the best way forward
Getting to vSphere 6 however is the challenge . I will need to move VDS to VSS to move esxi hosts to VC6 .
Breaking the existing Teaming might be a problem with this vSphere 5.1 Mixed mode ( IP and Port hash )
Any insights please ?
How to block a specific port?
Hi, I'd like to know if there is any way to define firewall rules to block a specific port on my VMware ESXi 5 in order to prevent the request to go to Windows SO installed on my virtual machine.
My scenary is that:
I have a game that consists on 3 separated systems:
- Account Server
- Game Server
- Npc Server
The Npc Server connects to GameServer using a specific Port. If I don't disable that port to external access, other people can also connect their Npc Server to my GameServer.
Thanks.
ESXi 5.5 on Proliant ML350P G8 not shutting down
Hi, I'm having a problem with an ESXi 5.5 installation on a HP Proliant ML350P G8. I've setup the Host via Vsphere to shut down every VM gracefully (guest shutdown) with a shutdown delay of 60. I tried, then by using putty, to launch the shutdown.sh command. I've noticed the VMs on Vsphere starting to shutdown. I guess there were all of them offline when the host disconnected my vsphere and putty session.
I thought it was finally going to power itself off but instead, the Proliant was still running and did not shut itself off, I had to do it manually when about 13 minutes were passed since launching the shutdown command from putty.
What could be causing this issue? Why the server it's not shutting itself completely?
This is crucial because I was trying to measure the time it takes to completely shut itself off so that we can buy an adequate UPS.
Thanks everyone fo the help.

Lost connectivity to device naa.xxxxxxxxx
Recently we unmounted many devices on multiple hosts by following proper procedure
Clean all the data in datastore --> unmount datastore --> detach the lun from devices tab --> unmap from storage
Though we followed the above process of detaching the lun, when our storage team unmapped the lun, still it generated events in vcenter as "Lost connectivity to device naa.xxx" which eventually triggered multiple incidents.
And these alerts are triggered once for each path to the device not a recursive alerts. Is it an expected one ? or did we miss anything here ?
Please help!!

IBM Vcenter S 8886 datastore not detected by Blades , ESXI 5.5
HI ALL,
Hope everybody fine here and doing well .
We have one real issue with IBM Vcenter S 8886 Hardware . The issue started with multiple hard drivers failures in IBM chassis and then those faulty drivers were replaced with new hard drivers .
As IBM system spec ,it configured as RAID 10 with two storage. Each storage have 5# HDD part of the RAID and 1# as spare one . The system automatically started RAID rebuilding tasks after installing the replacement HDDs. This task was completed with no error after check the volumes & HDD status from system .
At this point , the blades were power off . Then after power them up, we got the the following error message ,
Then, we reinstalled the EXSI 5.5 hypervisor softwere in all blades and after completing the installation , we got following message ,
we got to clear this error message after accessing the blade ( host ) via Vsphare client .
Then , we found the datastores not detected by blades and only storage adapters were available as below screenshots ,
we tried to add the again the storage adapter as datastores however it only give us one option to format the storage adapter before add as datastore as below screenshots .
we required to maintain the existing data of those storage adapters and we can not format it since we dont have backup of it .
The big question is how to restore the existing datastores without format it ?
Thanks & Regards

Should I renew my VMware 5 support contract?
I got an email saying my support contract has expired for the VMware 5 Essentials Kit I purchased some years ago. My view here is that there is no further development that I can see with 5.5 latest build valid for more than a year now. And for support - heck the community is the best place to get that anyway. Can anyone think of a reason for me to part with the $ 171.60 they want for the next three years. I realize it is a small amount per year but am I not just throwing good money at nothing?
VMware ESX/ESXi , vmware vsphere client and with Microsoft Credential Guard / Device Guard technology

I want to ask , are the VMware ESX/ESXi , vmware vsphere client compatibility with Microsoft Credential Guard / Device Guard technology
I know that VMware workstation are not compatibility with this technology but what about ESX/ESXi , vmware vsphere client
Kindly , your support and help..
Snapshot scheduler
Good morning,
I'm managing ESXI 5.0.0 through VSphere Client 5.0.0 but it looks like there is no way to schedule something (I need to schedule snapshots), am I right?
So, I wonder if I can schedule snapshots through ESXI shell.
I'm able to login (ssh) as root.
First question: is it correct to use "root" to schedule tasks? Should I login with "vpxuser" instead? Or another user?
Second question: is it possibile to schedule snapshots through the shell? Assuming I will use crontab, which commands should I use?
Thanks in advance
