ESXi Datastore Extent ID Changed - Old Offline

$

Hi,

Our server had an issue with the RAID controller which resulted in the array being reported as foreign. We imported the array again and started up as normal.

However, we have now noticed that the ID of the array has changed, which means its being reported as offline for the datastore!

What we have
datastore1      -      VMWare installed, and servers D: drive. Single array.

datastore2     -       Servers boot. Two array extents. secondary is appearing as offline!

So what i need to do is update the datastore to point to the new array ID instead of the old one.

Any ideas how i can do this?

Many thanks,

Dan

EDIT: This is the error in the log:

An attached device

naa.6782bcb0504a9f001d833b2f0591b424:1 may

be offline. The file system [datastore2, 5277cbbf-

b61fcc93-7027-842b2b07db68] is now in a

degraded state. While the datastore is still

available, parts of data that reside on the extent

that went offline might be inaccessible.

error.

EDIT2: If i try to increase the storage capacity again, i get this error:

Call "HostDatastoreSystem.ExtendVmfsDatastore" for object "ha-datastoresystem" on ESXi failed.

Operation failed, diagnostics report: Unable to add extent to filesystem : Extent naa.6782bcb0504a9f00ff00003c03df4687:1 is already a part of the volume.

The datastore capacity is 2.35TB, which would include the 545GB RAID array and the 1.8TB RAID array. but only part is showing up.

Help using a NVIDIA Quadro M5000 with ESXi 5.1

Hi,

I`ve readed a lot of material about that since yesterday.

My scenario is the following:

  • Server: HP ProLiant ML350 Gen9
  • Graphic card:NVIDIA Quadro M5000
  • vSphere version:5.1.0 build 2323236

Downloaded this driver from NVIDIA download center:

  • NVD.NVIDIA_bootbank_NVIDIA-VMware_304.76-1OEM.510.0.0.802205-999851.zip

And installed this way:

  • Enter maintenance mode
  • Uncompressed the zip file and uploaded the vib file to the ESXi host.
  • Accessed the server using SSH and ran this command: esxcli software vib install -v /vmfs/volumes/L20/NVIDIA-VMware-304.76-1OEM.510.0.0.802205.x86_64.vib

Then I configured the xorg service to start with the host and rebooted it.

Created a new VM using Windows Server 2012 R2 x64 media and configured it to use 3D support (128MB).

When I try to install the NVIDIA driver on Windows, it tolds me that no compatible hardware was found.

So I started troubleshooting and ran this commands on a SSH session:

SSH.png

When I go to the passthrough configuration, it shows Unkown VGA compatible controller:

Passthrough.png

On the iLO, it shows the correct model of the graphic card:

iLO.png

Can it be an ESXi version problem?

If I upgrade to ESXi 5.5 after installing the ESXi 5.1 NVIDIA driver, it will continue working?

I've started reading this document: http://www.vmware.com/content/dam/digitalmarketing/vmware/en/pdf/techpaper/vmware-horizon-view-graphics-acceleration-dep…

And the VT-d is enabled on BIOS.

Any help will be appreciated =]

Windows Server 2012 R2 Treating VMDKs as External Media in vSphere 5.1 U3

$

I have a few Server 2012 Standard R2 VMs, one happens to be a SQL Server with a total of 4 VMDKs, C:X:Y:Z volumes in the OS. My DBA called me to say all but the C: drive was giving her Access Denied after about a month of being in service. I logged on as Local Admin/Domain Admin and I got the same thing. I could not even access the security of the volumes. Logged on as Local Admin I could, and everything looked fine. I could UNC to these volumes admin shares with no issue. After some research I find that since server 2012, it has treated VMDKs as external storage. There was an issue with Hyper-V also, but Microsoft fixed those. If you go to your task bar and use your external media tool, you will see your drives there as external media to eject if possible.

In 2012 R2 there is a new security policy, that was not configured, but it seems to have acted anyway.. For removable media after so much I/O it locks the drives. There were a few work arounds for this, including disabling the audit policy, which again was not configured. And then this Vmware KB about adding a line to the VM advanced options to disable Plug-N-Play hot swap.

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1012225

Neither fix worked in unlocking the locked drives.

I wound up as local admin adding authenticated users to the security permissions and that unlocked them for logged in and system account uesrs after that. But I don't know if this will lock up again for that fix after so much I/O again.

I have opened a ticket with Microsoft, and so far applied all the patches/hot fixes they advised, and then they suggested changing the SAS Controller from LSI to Parallel which borked the server by locking the C: drive and not allowing windows to boot or autorepair.

These are the Microsoft updates I have applied that they asked with no luck.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2883200

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/20885.hyper-v-update-list-for-windows-server-2012-r2.aspx

Anyone else having this issue? I think this is a huge problem that windows server 2012 & R2 is seeing  vmdks as external media attached. Especially with these type of audit policies being added in.

And maybe I hit it sooner since I have a SQL server with databases running on these drives.

Any help would be appreciated.

Here is another link describing the issue at hand, although this is more of a share issue, but related.

IP HASH and Ether Channels

$

Afternoon guys , I require some help with a client we inherited .

We know if you want to use IP hashing , you should have Ether-Channel configured Up steam , with LACP as an optional bit of intelligence .

The large infrastructure we inherited has both IP hash , and Route based on Originating port set op portgroups

One vDS , two Uplinks per IBM FLEX ESXI host with roughly 50% of port groups on IP and the rest on Port ID

How is it even working ?

As my Network guys confirmed we don't have Ether Chanel set up ?

Port ID requires that only old school trunking is done

IP hash requires Ether Channel

So how do they both co exist on shared uplinks , shared BLADE IO modules , TOR and Core Switch ?

I need to upgrade to vSphere 6 , so basically and I trying to come up with the best config there

For now , I think making sure there are no Ether Channels , and using LBT is the best way forward

Getting  to vSphere 6 however is the challenge . I will need to move VDS to VSS to move esxi hosts to VC6 .

Breaking the existing Teaming might be a problem with this vSphere 5.1 Mixed mode ( IP and Port hash )

Any insights please ?

How to block a specific port?

$

Hi, I'd like to know if there is any way to define firewall rules to block a specific port on my VMware ESXi 5 in order to prevent the request to go to Windows SO installed on my virtual machine.

My scenary is that:

I have a game that consists on 3 separated systems:

- Account Server

- Game Server

- Npc Server

The Npc Server connects to GameServer using a specific Port. If I don't disable that port to external access, other people can also connect their Npc Server to my GameServer.

Thanks.

ESXi 5.5 on Proliant ML350P G8 not shutting down

$

Hi, I'm having a problem with an ESXi 5.5 installation on a HP Proliant ML350P G8. I've setup the Host via Vsphere to shut down every VM gracefully (guest shutdown) with a shutdown delay of 60.  I tried, then by using putty, to launch the shutdown.sh command. I've noticed the VMs on Vsphere starting to shutdown. I guess there were all of them offline when the host disconnected  my vsphere and putty session.

I thought it was finally going to power itself off  but instead, the Proliant was still running and did not shut itself off, I had to do it manually when about 13 minutes were passed since launching the shutdown command from putty.

What could be causing this issue? Why the server it's not shutting itself completely?

This is crucial because I was trying to measure the time it takes to completely shut itself off so that we can buy an adequate UPS.

Thanks everyone fo the help.

Lost connectivity to device naa.xxxxxxxxx

Recently we unmounted many devices on multiple hosts by following proper procedure

Clean all the data in datastore --> unmount datastore --> detach the lun from devices tab --> unmap from storage

Though we followed the above process of detaching the lun, when our storage team unmapped the lun, still it generated events in vcenter as "Lost connectivity to device naa.xxx" which eventually triggered multiple incidents.

And these alerts are triggered once for each path to the device not a recursive alerts. Is it an expected one ? or did we miss anything here ?

Please help!!

IBM Vcenter S 8886 datastore not detected by Blades , ESXI 5.5

HI ALL,

Hope everybody fine here and doing well .

We have one real issue with IBM Vcenter S 8886  Hardware . The issue started with multiple  hard drivers failures in IBM chassis and then those faulty drivers were replaced with new hard drivers .

As IBM system spec ,it configured as RAID 10 with two storage. Each storage have 5# HDD part of the RAID  and 1# as spare one . The system automatically started RAID rebuilding tasks after installing the replacement  HDDs. This task was completed with no error after check the volumes & HDD status from system .

At  this point , the blades were power off . Then after power them up, we got the the following error message ,

blade error_1.png

Then, we reinstalled  the EXSI 5.5  hypervisor softwere in all blades and after completing the installation , we got following message  ,

after_reinstall_blade error.jpg

we got to clear this error message after accessing the blade ( host ) via Vsphare  client .

Then , we found the datastores not detected by blades and only  storage adapters were available  as below screenshots ,

1.png

2.png

we tried to add the again the storage adapter as datastores  however  it only give us one option to format the storage adapter before add as datastore  as below screenshots .

3.png

we required to maintain the existing data of those storage adapters and we can not format it since we dont have backup of it .

The big question is how to restore the existing datastores without format it ?

Thanks & Regards

Snapshot scheduler

$

Good morning,

I'm managing ESXI 5.0.0 through VSphere Client 5.0.0 but it looks like there is no way to schedule something (I need to schedule snapshots), am I right?

So, I wonder if I can schedule snapshots through ESXI shell.

I'm able to login (ssh) as root.

First question: is it correct to use "root" to schedule tasks? Should I login with "vpxuser" instead? Or another user?

Second question: is it possibile to schedule snapshots through the shell? Assuming I will use crontab, which commands should I use?

Thanks in advance

Should I renew my VMware 5 support contract?

I got an email saying my support contract has expired for the VMware 5 Essentials Kit I purchased some years ago. My view here is that there is no further development that I can see with 5.5 latest build valid for more than a year now. And for support - heck the community is the best place to get that anyway. Can anyone think of a reason for me to part with the $ 171.60 they want for the next three years. I realize it is a small amount per year but am I not just throwing good money at nothing?
