I am using vmware ESXi and creating a clone (right click-> clone). Want to access the cloning related information(cloning date, time) inside my Guest OS(parent) logs. How do I programatically fetch these details. Can I find it inside the .vmx or .vmsd or .vmdk file?

web client and esxi management

I currently have vsphere essentials and have three esx hosts.

I have just added a esxi sphere standard at a remote site and I'm using veeam to create replicas on this esxi.

The problem i have is that i cannot fully manage the replica VMs because they are version 10 which requires the web client. I don't have a second vcenter server. I cannot add the additional standard vsphere esxi to my existing vcenter server because essentials license only allows 3 essentials licenced esxi.

Is there a way to manage the host directly using the web client? or does someone have another work round?

Maximum 10Gb and 1Gb Ports supported in ESXi 5 update 1

Hi,

In the configuration maximums guide for ESXi 5, it states that when combining 10Gb and 1Gb ports, is 6 x 10Gb and 4 x 1Gb ports.

My question is, what is the maximum 1 Gb ports you can have if you are running only 4 x 10Gb and not 6. Is there another combination limit or is it only an issue when you hit 6 x 10Gb?

Thanks,

EMC Clariion CX3 not supported in 5.1, but will it work?

Hi all.  We are preparing to move to ESXI 5.1 from 4.1U2 in the next few weeks.  We have an old EMC Clariion CX3-20c that I've been using as a test box for some time.  It is not our primary array (those are Equallogics) and is only used for testing and other completely non-critical uses.

The HCL for 5.1 shows that nothing in the CX3 family is supported.  My questions are, will it still work and if so, are there any tweaks required?  I'm okay with it being unsupported since it serves such a non critical role, so long as I can get it connected.  I'm just trying to squeeze some more life out this older array.

We are connecting via software iscsi initiators, no fiber channel stuff.

Thanks!

vSphere Web Client for Mac with Non-US Keyboard

Hey!

At first, here's my Setup:

VMWare vSphere Web Client: Version 5.5.0 Build 1441077

Client-Integration-Plug-In: Client Support-Version 5.5.0 Build 1279455

Browser: Chrome Version 32.0.1700.77

Flash Player: MAC 12,0,0,41

When I connect to a VM Console on my Mac, using the vSphere Web Client with a German System and a German Keyboard, the Key-Mappings seem to be US. I'm very enthusiastic about using the VMWare vSphere Web Client on my Mac but as I often need Symbols and Characters like Ä,Ü,Ö,ß I have to wait for a fix.

In the following Post the User MikeH_KGH is describing the same Problems on a Swedish system. (Page 4)

ESXi 5.0.0U1 (821926) Windows Server 2012 Guest Installation Hangs

$

Installation of Windows Server 2012 RTM Datacenter Core failed on ESXi 5.0.0U1 (821926) until I resolved a contradiction in the VMware documentation. In the VMware Compatibility Guide for this configuration, the VMXNET3 NIC is said to be supported, but based on trial and error, it is not. The E1000E NIC does work properly.

With the VMXNET3 NIC, the symptoms are that Windows Server 2012 Setup completes the file copying phase and reboots. It goes through "Getting Devices Ready" and then hangs indefinitely on a black splash screen with the spinning wheel of white dots (WDOD?) and the caption "Getting Ready".

The compatibility guide refers to three KB articles, including KB 2006859: Windows 8 / Windows Server 2012 Operating System does not boot or install on ESXi or ESX, KB 2021887: Windows 8 Release Preview and Windows Server 2012 Release Candidate fail when starting for the first time after the installation, and one other. The first of these states near the bottom that the VMXNET3 NIC does not work, contradicting the compatibility guide. The second article refers to the need for EFI virtual firmware, which I found to be true, and the need for a VMX setting vmGenCounter.enable = False, which I found not to be necessary.

I have not yet tested ESXi 5.1 due to its current incompatibilty with VMware View. Hopefully this experience will save others some time and effort meanwhile.

Mount a datastore with empty label

$

I've been trying to get this solved for over a week now, googled most any article and post out there...

Here is what I have (I'm not an admin or vmware guy, so please bare with me if I use wrong terminology):

Before the issue occurred: ESXi 5.1 host with datastore1 and datastore2. The host is located on the same physical device (dev1) where datastore1 is located.

What happened: I looked like the device with the host and datastore1 started failing and the host wouldn't boot up anymore. I have pulled the dev1 out of the server, added a new dev3, installed new host onto dev3 and created another datastore on it datastoreESXi. I also managed to fix the dev1 and it is working again.

What I have now: three devices in the server - dev3 (host and datastoreESXi), dev2 (datastore2) and dev1 (that contains the datastore1 partition)

I can only see the following datastores

  • datastore2
  • datastoreESXi

The datastore1 is not recognized by the host.

When I try to add storage using vSphere Client, it wants to reformat it (there is no VMFS Label for the partition).

When I run "esxcfg-volume -l", I get nothing... I'm thinking due to the missing label again...

"partedUtil getptbl" for the disk shows it formatted as "vmfs" and have the VMFS datastore GUID - AA31E02A400F11DB9590000C2911D1B8

"ls /dev/disks/" returns the partitions of dev1 listed...

Any advice as far as how do I get the datastore1 partition to get a label so it'd be recognized as a datastore and I could mount it?

(I have no idea why the label disappeared...)

Thanks!

HELP How much additional space does ESXI 5.0 snapshot consolidation require?

$

I have the capacity of 400 GB that is used by a host for 390 GB, so I have 10 GB free space left.

The system tells me to consolidate. Do I have enough free space for a consolidation?

Data center migration with same IP address scheme in 2 physical locations

$

We are consolidating multiple regional data centers into a single data center (Hosted vSphere).  The requirements are that the new data center keeps the same IP addressing schema as they used to have. At the same time they can't decide how they will cut over to the new data center (Cold Cut or gradual migration) In my opinion they need to decide which method they will use as this will alter the Network design at every level..

Please don't ask me why the decision makers are insisting on this I have already fought a political battle about how outrageously stupid this request is and how the Network is not a magical unicorn that can sparkle away all the massive flaws of this approach.

Their justifications is that they don’t want to have to change any Hard coded IP addresses in the Applications but they are not even sure if there are any hard coded IP's in the first place. They rely on an external vendor to manage this for them and any time you ask them for anything they charge an extortionate amount of money even to look into anything.

So my question is.. Have any of you come across this kind of lunacy and do you have any advice or knowledge about how to approach this migration?

I can't see how both the current IP addressing/DNS scheme can live at 2 physical locations at once without massive L3 issues.

After searching high and low I want to avoid NAT since we don’t know if the applications can live with that. I think possible "Stretching the VLAN" may be a good option that way we can gradually migrate the VM's across and we will not be forced to do a cold cut without any testing over a weekend

All thoughts welcome !

Enabling audio (sound and mic) for a windows Server 2008 R2 guest on an ESXi 5.0 host

I need to enable audio (either utoput sound and input microphone) on a Windows Server 2008 R2 guest hosted by an ESXi 5.0 host and accessed via RDP.

I have a Windows 7 guest migrated from VMware Workstation with audio working fine (microphone input not yet tested) but in the VM settings I see an "HD audio" device I can't add to the Windows Server 2008 R2 guest because I don't see it in the list of available HW components.

Can anybody please tell me how can I configure either my Windiows server 2008 R2 guest and the VM?

These things were installed when the computer started to present the issues i and about to describe.

So here is the basic issue

Real computers a other Vm's  cant connect / ping the Problem VM randomly.

Packets drop for about 15 seconds randomly (can be a frequent as 10 - 15 mins and sometime can stretch beyond 30 mins.

this screen shot is pinging troublesome VM 192.168.168.10

and perfect VM 192.168.15.124

Both Vms are on same host, storage, v switch.

Strange issue now is that if i have RDP session to it and ping 192.168.15.125 the rdp session drops out off course ( so dose console from Vcentre looks frozen) but once it reccenct the packets that were pinging don seem to have dropped any!  either to other VM or router at the site .... So odd.

Phyiscal Computers pinging the troublesome VM fail but while i can ping that i can ping other Vm's with no issues.

The VM is losing about 1% of packet over 50,000 pings some times less the 1%

OK what have I tried so far.

Can anyone give me some tips i am very stuck i would consider my skills in VMWARE moderate and that's why I guess I am find this issue so tricky

If the VM is less has  activity /use  it can result in longer gaps between drop outs. but they never stop.

vCLI on Linux - resxtop, vifp

$

hello,

just installed vCLI (source: VMware-vSphere-CLI-5.5.0-2043780.x86_64.tar.gz) on an ubuntu 12.04.5 -64bit host and a few questions came up.

before executing the vmware-install.pl i did: apt-get install lib32z1 build-essential gcc uuid uuid-dev perl libssl-dev perl-doc liburi-perl libxml-libxml-perl libcrypt-ssleay-perl libarchive-zip-perl libsoap-lite-perl libdata-dump-perl libclass-methodmaker-perl

1) where are the executeables for vifp-commands? do i need to install anything additional?

2) if i try to start resxtop with "resxtop --server=esxi01.mydomain.com" the following message appears:

/usr/lib/vmware-vcli/bin/resxtop: error while loading shared libraries: libncurses.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Many thanks for any advice.

VMware Vsphere ESXI 5.5 update 2 Free anymore?

$

I downloaded VSphere 5.5 (VMware-VMvisor-Installer-201501001-2403361.x86_64.iso)  I was under the assumption that this version is free but, I cannot find on the download page where the license key is at? I have downloaded the free 5.1 version before and I can download version 6 with a license key however, I have already deployed version 5.5

Is Vmware not giving that version out for free anymore? Will the version 6 license key work?

Thanks,

Raw mapped disk - system freeze when disk fails

$
0
0

I have a question about raw mapped disks into a VM

I have a whitebox with 4x 3TB connected to the motherboard SATA (AHCI) raw mapped into a VM where a NAS software (OpenMediaVault/ubuntu) uses them to create a raid5 volume.

For reference but not relevant to this post: there's also an external Adaptec controller which runs an HW Raid1 where ESXi and the VMs are installed

So the raid5 works fins and it's even fast but... in the last few years I did experience some disk failure. I was very surprised with the outcome

as I was expecting the disk to be automatically excluded from the raid5 and the VM to carry on with a degraded volume. This was not the case, had about 3 disk failing in

the 3 years and they all behaved the same way: The VM freezes up to the point that a host reboot is needed! And sometime the ESXi will not boot up until

the disk is removed/replaced. Specifically the ESXi boot procedure stops while loading the AHCI drivers.

I'm very confused by this behaviour. I appreciate this might not be a conventional scenario but I would have never though a data disk failure

could affect the whole host. Since I'm working remotely and I'm not able to easily spot which disk is now affecting the system, I had to disable the SATA from the BIOS

to allow ESXi to fully boot and allow the other VMs to load.

Some people might argue: why did you raw map instead of creating datastores, assigning to the VM and building a raid5 on top? I suppose at that time

I was interested in the SMART reading from within the VM which btw have turned very useful and still using them periodically.

So to recap I am in a position where my setup is resilient (no data loss) but affected with a system freeze when HW failure occurs which really annoys me.

Is there anything I should consider, even something simple I'm completely missing out here that could improve my setup preventing the host freeze in failure scenario?

Can changing the BIOS setting from AHCI to SATA (native) have an effect here?

Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated!

Remember this is a "cheap" whitebox, that's why the motherboard SATA controllers are used (Tyan S8212).

Thanks!

Deploy OVA issue at setup neworks step

$

Hello,

I am trying to make it possible for a coworker to be be able to deploy an ova on a specific ESXi host, and have run into an issue.

I first looked up the minimum required permissions to deploy an ova from VMware documentation. I configured per the docs creating a role, and then

assigning it to the ESXi host and the specified folder. When the user attempted to deploy an ova he is stopped at the Setup Networks step with the

following message.

"The source OVF uses networks but the destination host does not have any networks configured"

There are 5 networks on the host including the default. I have full admin to datacenter and when I do the deploy I have no issue. So with a pressing need to have

this user be able to deploy ova's at this time I decided to grant them full admin on the one ESXi host only, and to the folder. They still run into the same issue at

the Setup Networks step. What piece of the puzzle am I missing?

VCenter & ESXi 5.1

Thank you
