Configure RHEL cluster using openfiler

Hi anyone tried setting up RHEL cluster in VMWARE using openfiler?

I am wondering if this would solve the RHEL fencing limitation where by 2 RHEL Guest OS is presented a LUN via ISCSI using another VM with Openfiler configured as ISCSI san.

Thanks for any info

Unable to install Server 2012 R2 on VMWare 5.5.0 Update 2

Hi,

I am trying to install Windows Server 2012 R2 onto my vmware 5.5.0 server however I am just getting 'Windows failed to start' Insert CD and repair your computer.

File: \windows\system32\drivers\pdc.sys

status: 0xc0000098

Info the operating system couldn't be loaded because a critical system driver is missing or contains errors.

VMware is installed on a HP DL380 G5

VMK_NO_MEMORY Error on startup.

Hi,

I've setup a Ubuntu virtual machine on a vSphere server with

  • 1GB RAM
  • 1 CPU
  • 250GB hard disk

However, when I try to start up the VM I get a "Could not start VMX: msg.vmk.status.VMK_NO_MEMORY" error.

This is the error stack: Heap globalCartel-1 already at its maximum size of 7869288. Cannot expand. Could not start VMX: msg.vmk.status.VMK_NO_MEMORY.

However the server has 32GB of RAM with only 12GB actually in use.

On another ESXI server I've done exactly the same (with the server being identical to the one with the error) and it's working fine.

I'd appreciate any help!

ESXi 5.5 & Mellanox IB Dual Port Card card showing just a sinlge vmnic

Hi guys

I just got two Mellanox cards from eBay to use those as 10GbE adapters.

However there are two things I don't get.

1. One card shows up as expected with two ports / vmnics. OK the namig of one vmnic is a bit off but at least it's working. Also the card shows some regular MAC addresses.

2. The other card pops up with just a single vmnic and a weird MAC (this is probably normal in the IB world?)

However I would like to find out why one card only shows up with a single port, any ideas? I have seen some similar screenshots floating around but no fix.

Some tips would be really appreciated!

Hi All,

I have a RHEL 6.5 server running as guest in ESX 5.5

The server went out of space on .vmdk file

Guest RHEL Server details

Disk 1 : 2 TB

Disk 2 : 2 TB

Disk 3 : 2 TB

Using the above disks the Filesystem(FS) is created of size 5TB

The Filesystem had 3.9TB of free space and it complaint that it went out of space

All the disks assigned to this servers are Thick Provisioned

I checked the Snapshot manager and there we no snapshots also I browsed the datastore and found there are no snapshots file.

I cannot do a Storage vMotion as I do not have additional datastore.

Can you please help me in understanding what could be the issue.

Hi all,

i been to several blogs on how to enable the EVC on the ESX Host, but the web client interface is very frustrating.

Under the ESX Host, Manage -> Settings I'm suppose to see the Configuration option but it's not there. I only can see the Configuration settings under Summary.

Can someone please let me know how to get to it ?

virtual machine as nfs (ISO) server for host esxi server

$

Hello Everyone,

I decided to post an observation i made during a non standard ESXI setup (couldn't find anything about it so i am making a post).

This is not a fault or a question more of a discussion.

The circumstance below are due to the limitation of having only one server in a remote site.

What i noticed and i am pretty sure this is not supported or recommended, is that when you have a virtual machine on an esxi host that presents (as a datastore) a NFS full of ISO to VMWare (the esxi host) the machine hosting the NFS cannot use the ISO.

What i mean by the above is if you try and mount an ISO from the NFS datastore on the virtual machine hosting them it will lock up. Now if you try and mount it on any other Virtual machine it's fine no problem.

The bellow diagram show our setup.

I assume it has something to do with the reconfiguration of the virtual machine when you mount the ISO, maybe a microsecond downtime for it to mount and due to this downtime the ISO presented becomes unavailable and in turn locks up the mount, it's worth noting when i say it locks up the entire virtual machine locks up. Eventually vmware does pop up a message and ask if i should cancel the mount as it noticed that it's causing problems. Maybe someone with better understating than me can explain why this behavior occurs.

Now i know there are other ways of doing this like putting the images directly on the datastore but our situation requires that ISO s are synced on regular bases so we use DFS to sync from main site and NFS(usually located on different server) to present to ESXI servers.

Unable to access newly setup vCenter 5.5 using client

Hi all,

I have just finish setting up the vCenter successfully but i'm unable to access it via the client with the error message below.

Error: You do not have permission to login the server: VC Hostname

The accounts I have try are the domain admin, service account for the vCenter and my account. All these account have administrator access to the vCenter server itself.

I also add these accounts using Web Client to Administration -> SSO -> User and Groups -> Groups -> Administrator.

So far I'm only able to access the web client using vsphere administrator. Anywhere else I may miss out ?

How do I manually load a network card driver?

hi all

My old quad NIC card is visible to the kernel as

Digital Equipment Corporation DECchip 21142/43 (rev 41) Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company 10/100Base-TX (PCI) [A5506B]

This is not directly supported by the kernel but I managed to add the drivers as shown below

How can I manually load the drivers to see what is going on. ESXi is not seeing the card yet, the kernel interface is not there yet

thanks

PF

I manage to upload the drivers and now I can see them like this

Apparently the driver was not loaded when the server was rebooted

Is there anything that I can do to manually load the driver to see if it sees the NIC ?

Yes - that's what I said - this has gone far enough and its time the user community took a stand to let VMware know how horrible the web client is, it is tantamount to my worst user interface experience in 20 years of IT.

Attention VMware - this is really simple - all the money you wasted developing this could have been spent in other areas.  you are forcing GARBAGE on your customer base, and for that you will eventually crash and burn, its only a matter of time.  Hasn't the thousands upon thousands of posts about this sunk in yet??  Hello?

Purpose of this post is simple and obvious...  please refrain from your A** kissing pitch about cloud this and that... don't need to hear it.    and I could care less about managing a complex infrastructure from an android or ipad, its ridiculous to expect someone to squeeze the mountains of information that needs to be at your finger tips quickly to efficiently manage a VMware infrastructure on a tiny screen...

If I wasn't totally pissed off with having to use this client I wouldn't have posted this VENTING..

ESXi 5.5 quality is bad

When we was on ESXi 5.1 last year, everything was fine, it's pretty stable.

Then we upgraded to ESXi 5.5 at the  end of the year, now we got looooooot of problem. All are different scope.

It points to driver, VMware tools or something else. It's related to ESXi host, or guest OS. I'm still working with VMware on these problems. (Check my blog you will see two  problem of new version)

I'm considering roll back to ESXi 5.1.

This is just a personally comment: Stay in ESXi 5.1 if you are using HP blade system or Cisco UCS.

Someone told me same but I didn't take it seriously. Now I pay for it.

I have purchased VMWARE ESXI 5.0 and VSphere Server 5.0. ESXI is hosted on the server with 32 GB RAM. Using VSphere Client, how many VMs can I host and Run simultaneously on ESXI. I want to create VMs with 32 GB RAM. Does this affect performance ? Physical RAM of the server on which ESXi is hosted is 32 GB.

Move VM from one host to another with shared storage

Hi,

I have a question about how to move a vm from an ESX 4 host to an ESXi 5 host.  These hosts have access to the same shared storage but the ESX 4 host is outside the network and the ESXi 5 host is inside the network so vMotion isn't an option.  They are in different clusters.  I know there must be an easy way to move this vm but for the life of me I can't seem to find it.  I would assume that i delete the vm from the external cluster but how do I get the vm into the internal cluster?

Thanks in advance..

aligning vmdks

I realize VMware converter v5 and forward will handle the alignment of VMDKs.   However, converter is dog slow.

My question is  - will a storage vmotion operation whereby the disk format is changed provide this alignment?   or perhaps svmotion in general?

thanks in advance.
