Hello,
I was reading host failures cluster tolerates , in Admission control and I was able not able understand below concepts.
Difference between Used and available slots
Difference between Available slots and failover slots.
I have below Advanced Runtime info in my Test VMware cluster ,
Here it shows , I have 89 Total slots,
Available slots = 0
Failover slots = 83
As Available slots = 0 , does it mean I wont be able to poweron the VM anymore if one of the host is going down? Please explian.
thanks,
-Prashant Girennavar.
Dear tea
I have configured HA on my cluster, is there any way i can confirm my HA is working fine and it will take action if something goes wrong.

mr Vmware
how do I export decommissioned VM from one ESXi host to another host for backup?
my current host is using vsphere 5 essential.
can I export the VM to a NFS datastore for archive?
Dear All,
I'm wondering if using the nic teaming feature in Windows Server 2012 R2 inside a guest make sense with ESXi 5.5 hosts? Currently we have assigned one vxnet3 vnic to the Win2012 R2 guest. We are using nic teaming for the hosts.
Would adding one more nic to the guest improve the network performance for the guest?
Thanks,
Edy
Hi, all
Anyone know how to mount iLO virtual folder on ESXi5.5??
What's the command I should to do the mount?
Usually, in Linux or Windows, if you have clicked the virtual drivers on HP iLO web interface, you will see the auto mounted folder in the OS.
But, I don't know how it would be or how to have the same functionality in ESXi host. Anyone can help?
Thanks.
Hi,
over the last two weeks we have had a number of windows 2008R2 servers freeze. the servers respond to a ping but the application seems to fail. RDC to the servers also fails. when you connect to the console the seems to respond to a ctrl & del command but as soon as you do this the screen just hangs at the grey login screen.
we are running esx 5.5U2. just wondering if anyome else has got this issue?
Thanks
Does it make a big difference if a server has 4cpus or 2 cpus? I will end up using 2 more proc licenses for 4cpus hosts but are there any other advantahes or disadvantages going with 2 cpus vs 4?
I'm new to this game and to this community so forgive me if I've missed some points of etiquette. (I'll probably be going to VMware support with this in a couple of days)
So I have ESXi running on my Mac Mini. Nice. I get the https:// "Welcome page" and I can browse the unused datacenter. So I upgraded to Fusion 7 Pro to manage it and upload VMs from my Mac - but no luck with the uploading at all.
First attempt it complained about the "Hardware version", I had updated it to 11.
So I tried another still just on v10, and all I got was an indeterminate progress bar and then "Server close connection after 0 response bytes read" (see screenshot attached)
Have I missed an obvious step, or is there a problem with this Mini. (It has been on the shelf for ages with a note about the SSD in it not booting OSX properly, which is why I thought it would be a good candidate to trial install ESXi)
Cheers for any help/pointers for a noob
Dear all,
I am unable to install ESXi5.1 or ESXi 5.5 in my Dell 1950 servers through CD rom, interestingly the same ISO image when mapped through virtual media gets installed in Dell R 610 servers without any problem. I burnt the ISO image in new CD also and that's also of no use. Checksum is also fine, and I used external CD rom also, though its getting detected, I am unable to install the ESXI, having difficult time to deal with this, kindly help me.
Hi all.
I have 3 Dell R810 servers with QLE220 HBAs.
The problem with the HBAs is that the ESXi 5.1 cannot recognize them.
The first thing you'll answer is that those HBAs are not officially on the HCL, and I'm aware of that.
However my servers are only 2 years old and I'm guessing I'm not the only one with the problem.
Dell says that they oficially support ESXi 5.1 on this type of server ,and yes, in my install i have used the dell customized CD/DVD.
However there are no drivers for those HBAs on that CD/DVD.
I have looked all over in the forii and discussion groups all over the Internets, and thus far I have found the following links mildly helpful:
http://communities.vmware.com/thread/328090
http://communities.vmware.com/thread/168414
and this is where I downloaded the driver bundle for ESi 5.x from Qlogic:
I installed it using Update Manager and it installed allright, however there was no mention of the driver for my HBAs.
I then cruised the Internets for a different solution. And found the following solution:
which applies to ESXi 5.0 and even though it seems like a hack, it did make sense.
However in the process I seem to have hit an obtacle in that when trying to run the
tar -xvf scsi-qla.tgz (i.e. scsi_qla.v00)
I get a :
tar: invalid tar magic
error message.
I sense that the solution lies somewhere in this direction, however I'm baffled by this error.
I understand that VMware may have implemented a driver signing option in 5.1 to prevent tampering or rooting, however I must stress that
Please don't tell me go sort it out with Dell or the guys that sold you the servers.
Thanks in advance.
Hi All,
We are planning to add another switch to our current core switch and make it into a stack to address the issue of redundancy.
We plan on having 7 ESXi 5.5 hosts each connected to either stack member (4 physical connections 2x2)
Should we set up LACP on the ESXi hosts and create a LAG for each host on the physical switches or is there a better method.
Regards
Hi Guys,
I have installed a ESXI 5.5.0 on an Dell server, and then create a Windows Server 2008 virtual server in it. It is working well for the last 4 months. But Suddenly, the virtual server stopped working, so I have restarted the both the ESXI and virtual server, and then it is working again. Then I try to find the cause, but there is no any logs in the windows OS since 2014-11-14 14:36:53, I assume that the problem is caused by the VM, otherwise the Windows OS must have logs. Please find the VM logs when the problem happened below. I have googled these errors, but totally have no clue which is the real reason. So is there anyone having similar problem before, and know how to prevent it happening again?

We had an issue a while back that was addressed in this thread (Re: EMC XtremIO Gen2 array, vSphere 5.5, and Windows Server 2012 R2 EFI), but we seem to be experiencing a mild recurrence of it, in spite of the workaround being in place (Disk.DiskMaxIOSize = 4096). As before, our guests are Windows Server 2012 R2 with EFI as the firmware, our hosts are Dell PowerEdge R820's w/ QLogic 8262 CNAs, and our storage is XtremIO on 2.4.0 code.
What we've seen is that when we reboot EFI-based VMs (one by one via the vSphere Client or from within in the guest during automated Microsoft patch windows), the VM shuts down, remains "Powered On", but never boots again. The following syslog events from one VM stand out from the incident last night. I don't know how to interpret them, so they may not shed any light.

Maybe it isn't EFI related, but those are the only VMs that evidence this issue, and only on our XtremIO array. Other non-EFI VMs on XtremIO (re)booted fine, and all VMs, both EFI and BIOS, on our HP 3PAR array (re)booted without any issues.
I'll create a case in parallel, but wanted to drop these logs out here in case the community has seen anything similar. Thanks!

What happens when a virtual machine whose VMware tools version has been updated to the latest version is moved to a host with an older version VMware tools version? This could happen if the virtual machine exists in a cluster with DRS.
I got a 2008vm that has 40gb thin. The OS has size 40gb but its only using 20gb.
In windows, I shrinked it to 30gb.
then i tried to adjust the size under edit settings to 30gb but it will not let me change it
how do I adjust the thin disk size from 40gb to 30gb?
Hello everyone!
Let me introduce myself. I'm Roberto from Italy.
I regularly work on esxi, but on the blade servers. Now, I would like to install an esxi lab at home (version 5.5u2), so, I thought to share with you my doubt.
Which would you choose between these two (old) workstations? HP Z400 or Dell T3500?
Both has Xeon L5630 CPU and 24GB Ram, but HP has Intel integrated network card, instead, Dell has Broadcom BCM5761 integrated network card.
Thanks in advance
