vMotion for VMs running Microsoft clustering services.

$

Hi,

I would like to know if vMotion support for VMs clustered using Microsoft clustering services(MCS) is supported?

I recently came across a link below which talks about enabling support VMs using passthru RDMs(mainly for MCS clusters across ESXi hosts).

vSphere 5.5, RDMs and Microsoft Clustering | CormacHogan.com

I tried the same on VMs using passthru RDMs running on ESXi 5.5 and i still get the error saying that "vmotion is not supported with the SCSI bus sharing mode is physical".

Can someone please confirm if this restriction(as mentioned in link above) is removed in ESXi 5.5?

10gbe and Issues

I am having alot of issues with new hardware we got

I got new DL980s with 10gbe cards (550SFP), I have them running the latest driver and firmware,

Here is the issue i am having, I have a VDS setup with LACP, enabled with route and IP hash teaming.

My current cluster QA has old hosts with 5.1. They have copper 1gb for VMotion running x.x.44.61 IP, it can ping the new 980s VMotion nics on the 10gbe host A x.x.44.37 and Host B x.x.44.39.

But the new hosts cannot ping any vmotion IPs on other hosts even the x.x.44.61., there are many more in the cluster but this is just simplify the issue. this is some how related to 10gbe and the way network is setup

So can ping

x.x.44.61 --> x.x.44.37, x.x.44.39

but cannot

x.x.44.37 --> x.x.44.39

x.x.44.37 --> x.x.44.61

x.x.44.39 --> x.x.44.37

x.x.44.39 --> x.x.44.61

I ran a dump and all i see is that the new 980s cant resolve ARP requests, they keep asking for who owns 37 or 39 or 61, which the switch has the information. The network guys showed me the switch information and the arp table and they have the mac for 37/39/61.

I am starting to lose my mind. the 980s are running 5.1, they are all HP VSphere Installs. I cant think of all the information right now but ask questions so i can clarify. The switches are nexus switch and 6509 behind them. the Vmotion network is plain layer 2 vlan.

Can't start vCenter - SQL errors in logs

$

We seem to be suffering from an excessively large SQL database causing the issues detailed here - VMware KB: Purging old data from the database used by VMware vCenter Server 4.x and 5.x

I'm seeing the same errors described in this kb in my application logs and I can't start the vSphere client. I don't have the SQL Management Studio installed so I'm guessing that I should install the management studio on vCenter and follow these instructions. I just want to confirm whether or not this can be done without installing the management studio.

TIA!

What can I try

Gwetting a list of all the VMs and the used space

I apologize for my very basic question.

I need to produce a file (better if an Excel file) with the list of all the VMs in a simple vSphere 5.x infrastructure including 2 VMare ESXi 5.x servers and the disk space used (not allocated, just used) by each VM.

The simplest way looks to list the VMs from the vSphere client and export the list as an .xls file.

It looks simple, but when I look at the file I see either a lot of VMs missing and/or a lot of values missing for many VMs (just blank cells).

Is it a problem related to my vSphere client?

I attempted to create a PowerCli script using the "Get-VM | select-object Name" command, but my limited skill don't let me extract the used space value.

Can anybody please provide a PowerCli sample I can just copy and use?

Is there any other way to get the information I need?

Creating a separate vdisk for paging purpose

$

Dear Experts,

In physical servers sometimes we do create custom paging file to a separate partition on a hard disk if running low on virtual memory.

I would like to know if this also makes sense to do same by creating a separate vdisk in virtual machine OR not advisable OR best to let it be managed by Windows 2008 R2 server.

Any ideas on this ?

Kind Regards,

Can't connect to new ESXi 5.5 host with vSphere Client using Server 2008 R2

We recently updated to ESXi 5.5.   As of a week ago we cannot login into the Host using vsphere Client.  I have search for a solution but all appear to fix a problem with Server 2003 / Internet Explorer 8.0.

The error I receive is:

vSphere Client could not connect to "x.x.x.x".

An unknown connection error occurred. (The server could not interpret the client's request. (The remote server returned an error: (503) Server Unavailable.))

I tried to log into the host with Vsphere client from 2 different machines. Important:  I only have problems logging into 1 of  2 ESXi 5.5 hosts.

I am a newbie-----Thanks for any help.

Can't add storage

Hi All,

I'm trying to add 16TB odd of disk space into ESXi 5.5 on a Dell R720.  I can see the size and storage fine but it keeps either prompting me to use "Free space" which give me 224GB or when I select the other option I get an error message.

I've recreated the RAID 5 volume twice but can't get this working.

Any advice?

TIA

GUI: how to run the same command on multiple VMs at once ?

Hi,

let's assume we have several operations to do on several VMs (e.g. like Upgrade Virtual Hardware, vmtools install  - but it could be anything else of course ...).

I would like to avoid clicking on each VM (especially when we have hundreds on different clusters).  Is it possible to select somehow

(they are not next to each other) and carry out on particular operation on all selected at once ?

NIC physical connection detected but no DHCP

I'll forgive you folks a bit of newbie baiting here because this is a homebrew first effort setup and I'm using unsupported hardware.

I have installed ESXi 5.5 but the issue is that I have fallen at the next hurdle because I am unable to achieve network connectivity. In the management console the NIC says that it is connected, but it ends up with a self-assigned IP address. If I manually assign an IP address, I am unable to ping other devices on the network.

The system is installed on a Shuttle SZ87R6. I used this guide to get the driver for the Realtek 8111E NIC working - before doing that, the installation would not complete.

The DHCP server is a Netgear CG3700B cable modem/router which has no trouble providing IPs to other devices.

What's the next step to figuring out what's wrong?

[update] forgot to specify, I CAN ping localhost/127.0.0.1

Hi,

THANK YOU SO MUCH IN ADVANCE .......

Really poor network throughput between VM's.

$

I have been racking my brain over this for the better part of two weeks.  I seem to be getting really poor throughput between my Windows 2008 R2 VMs. I have read over several articles mentioning various tweaks to the VMXNET3 driver and the tcp stack. ( Disabling Autotune, Disable TSO, RSS, so on and so forth.)  I run a customized 2008 R2 image for the norm. However I decided some testing was in order. I grabbed me a eval copy of 2008 R2 from M$ and deployed me some machines. Both physical and virtual. Lemme run down my environment.

Physical Boxes:

Cisco UCS B200 x2 ( Sit in the same Chassis)

Vanilla install of 2008 R2

2 10GB Cisco VIC interfaces

2 300GB 15k SAS in Raid1

Throughput tests

Test file: 10GB junk file created with fsutil.

Between 2 physical B200's

Iperf test

Ran several tests with Parallel streams. Consistent 10GB Summerized throughput. ip

iperf -c xx.xx.xx.xx -P 10 -i 1 -p 5001 -w 9000.0K -f m -t 10

SMBv2 transfer

Virtuals

ESXi 5.5

2 vCPU

4GB Ram

Updated vmxnet3

Same file size 10GB created with fsutils

Between 2 VM;s.

IPERF (same as above )

A huge difference in transfer rates. The VMXnet3 adapter has been "optimized" based on what Vmware claims is the best settings with Windows 2008 R2.

On the physical side, both servers are deployed from the same service profile so the settings are identical.

Really beating my head against the wall on this one. Can anyone maybe provide a little insight or a new direction to go down?

ESXi 5.5 Changes in USB controller support?

$

Trying to upgrade my home lab to 5.5 to test out some of the new features before getting it rolling at work and I've run into a problem with installing it.

I have a pair of hosts running 5.1 installed to a USB key with an internal SSD for use as a host cache disk (prob to be swapped to vCache if i can ever get 5.5 to install).

5.1 and 5.0 before it recognised the USB key and installed to it with no problems, 5.5 however does not see the USB key at all. In fact as far as I can tell half way through the boot (at the yellow top half point) it seems to turn the USB subsystem off entirely as the usb keyboard plugged in turns off at this point. It does however continue booting off the USB cdrom drive

My best guess is that the UEFI boot is keeping the usb controllers in legacy mode and presenting them to the boot evironment, then ESXi starts the drivers for the USB controllers attempts to take them over from the UEFI bios and shuts them down/fails to load/who knows.

Wondering if anyone else has seen this and has a workaround?

My systems are:

ASUS P8H61-I R2.0 motherboard

i3-3220 cpu

USB key plugged into usb2 ports NOT the usb3 ports

Load Based Teaming utilizing FCoE

Hi everyone,

We are getting ready to install two Qlogic CNA's into our hosts and I really want to move away from IP Hash and move towards LBT because I like what it brings to the table. My one concern is that LBT isn't FCoE aware. So when LBT is looking to see which uplink is saturated, it is not getting the full picture. What can I do in my setup to address these concerns? Does LBT work well even while being oblivious to FCoE?
