Acceleration Kit from Essentials Plus -- What exactly do I get?

$

I have read all the marketing material on the vmware.com site regarding Acceleration Kits to extend to a 4th host from Essentials Plus.

To go from VMWare Essentials Plus to the VMWare Standard Acceleration Kit costs about $14,000 ($10k for license, $3900 for Production Support). My understanding is that this gives me 6 processor licenses, which is the same as I have with Essentials Plus.

Am I understanding correctly that the $14,000 doesn't actually give me any additional capacity, but rather it just now allows me to be able to then buy additional CPU licenses? Or am I reading that wrong and it actually gives me 6 ADDITIONAL CPU licenses, for a total of 12?

I feel like I must be missing something here...can anyone clarify?

Thanks,

Jason

Hello, Good Morning all !!

I'have vSphere Client 5.5 and i can't create local group in "Local users and groups" tab. When i can create a group show me an error and i can't create it. This is the error that i have :

Call "HostLocalAccountManager.CreateGroup" for object "ha-localacctmgr" on ESXi "IP" failed.

I'm logged at root.

I have seen in other forums that in latest version is impossible to create groups due to only is possible at Web Client that comes integrated with vCenter.

In older versions is possible but when i can login into vSphere Client 5.0 for example, i must update version and i can't use 5.0 version.

How can you help me ?

Thanks and greetings

PD: sorry for my poor english

ESXi 5.5 and FreeBSD 9.2 guest: vmware tools running (not installed)

Hi,

after I upgraded ESXi from 5.1 to 5.5, for FreeBSD 9.2 virtual machines I see vmware tools as running (not installed) in vSphere Client connected directly to hypervisor (no vCenter). I patched to 1474528 hoping it would fix it, but the problem still remains. Any ideas how to fix this?

ESXi 5.5 USB devices Intel Mainboard

Hi,

I have a number of servers with Intel S2600GZ mainboards all loaded with ESXi 5.5. Some servers the USB devices work OK (keyboard, mouse, usb drives etc) but others no devices are listed.

I have seen some threads that say to enable EHCI hand off but these bios's do not have that option. I have tried all sorts of BIOS settings on the servers that do no work to get the USB devices to list in ESXi but nothing works.

lsusb on one that works returns keyboard and mouse etc, the same command on the others and nothing at all is listed

These servers all have the exact same bios revision and were all installed from the same install DVD!

What can I check in ESXi on the working servers to compare with the servers that do no work?

We did not experience this issue with 5.1 only 5.5

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Atheros AR8171 / QCA8171 NIC driver ?

Hi everyone,

So i have a ASRock B85M-ITX mobo with this NIC but I've been unable to make the alx driver work on ESXi 5.x

The ioremap call fails and if I just try without remapping the driver loading fails as well

I was wondering if anyone had had luck with this ?

My kernel driver development skills are limited and i don't know why there should be such a problem with the VMKernel ?

I compared my source with sky2 (working vmkdriver) and alx (working linux kernel 3.13) and the source code up to the ioremap call.

They are very similar so i don't see why the error is here...

Anyone there experienced with this kind of dev ?

Anyone with a working driver ?

Any helps appreciated.

Pierre

PS 1 : i know it's not on the HCL but hey, this is a community question not a suport request ;-)

PS 2 : adding a NIC is not an option (albeit the favourite reply here) as i have a single PCIe port which is used by a 8x SATA card

ESXi Dump Collector in a VM

I looked everywhere but could find a clear answer. I have a two part question.

What happens when the Dump Collector is installed on a Guest VM and the Host that has that VM gets PSOD?

When we setup Dump Collector does it only save the dump files to remote location that we specify or does it also save a copy to local drive(given it has space)?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

New to ESXi 5.1 - errors in VSphere client on Windows 7. Please help!

Good Afternoon everyone,

In an attempt to introduce myself to VMware virtualisation I have recently installed ESXi 5.1 on an HP N40L microserver with 8GB RAM however have run into problems when creating my first VM. I am uisng the vSphere client downloaded onto my Windows 7 64 bit laptop from the link found in the page when pointing my browser to the hosts IP address. I have tried numerous fixes outlined in the KB’s and other sites to no avail. I would greatly appreciate all and any assistance.

I can create a new VM but get the error “An internal error occurred in the vSphere Client. Details: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation.” when I click on the new VM in the inventory in the left column. I can power on the newly created VM but if I right click the VM to open console I get the following error: “An internal error occurred in the vSphere Client. Details: The requested name is valid, but no data of the requested type was found”. If I press close I then immediately get the dialogue “An internal error occurred in the vSphere Client. Details: Object reference not set to an instance of an object”.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled .net framework 4, uninstalled and reinstalled the vSphere client several times, rebooted machine in between. I have also set the Data Execution Prevention to always off as suggested by some users (bcdedit.exe from CLI) but nothing is working for me. My machine is healthy, no malware, Windows is all up to date and using Microsoft Security Essentials for antivirus. I don’t know what else to try and currently this is the only client machine I have access to.

Please can someone advise what my next steps are? I thank you in advance. I have attached the logs generated by vSphere if you would like to take a look.

Unable to start a Vm with more than 1 CPU socket added

I have set up a few ESXi 5.5 boxes with the free license in the past few weeks, they have all been without issue until now. All 4 servers have the exact same hardware

Environment:

Dell Poweredge T620

2 Intel E5-2630 CPU's

40GB DDR3 ECC RAM

ESXi is installed on 2x 146GB 15K SAS Drives RAID-1

Datastore for VM's are 8x 600GB 10K SAS Drives RAID-10

Guest OS is Server2012r2 on all VM's

The 3 previous ESXi installs were done with Dell's customized ESXi 5.5 with no issue.

The 4th is where I am having issues. I have used the Following ESXi installs just in case there is a bug somewhere

ESXi 5.5 from VMware

ESXi 5.5 Customized by Dell

ESXi 5.5 U1 From VMware

No matter which verison of the ESXi I use I cannot get a VM to start with more than 1 CPU socket added to it. The VM doesn't even start the VMWare BIOS. I have tried the EFI Bios as well with no luck. The error message I get in the events is "VMware ESX unrecoverable error: (vcpu-X) vcpu-X:VM-entry failed; VMCS Valid (error code 8)". The vcpu-X is always a different one. I have attached the log file that gets created. If I give the VM only 1 CPU It starts just fine. I am at a loss as to what the issue could be.

Is this possible?

ESXi Lost access to volume

Hello Gurus,

Offlate i noticed an event log entry in vSphere client twice in short span of less than a day related to local storage as follows:

Lost access to volume

4f4c8bc0-4d13eab8-c8fc-5cf3fc09c3fa (vms-1)

due to connectivity issues. Recovery attempt is in

progress and outcome will be reported shortly.

info

and immediately

Successfully restored access to volume 4f4c8bc0-

connectivity issues.

The event details itself recommends "Ask VMware" link leads to VMware KB: Host Connectivity Degraded

and

this VMware KB: Host Connectivity Restored

As per the KB VMware is referring to SAN LUN, but in our case its the local storage, kindly shed some info as to why the local storage would lost its connectivity.

Note: all the local disk are on RAID-10.

thanks

How does HA cluster Host behave when one Host fails that holds a MSCS CIB (MS Cluster on one Host)

$

Hello everyone,

i got a quite simple question hoping to get the answer here in the vmware community, before i start testing to get an concrete answer.

My Situation:

I am running a vSphere 5.1 U2 ESXi 2 Host HA Cluster in my vCenter Datacenter where more HA Clusters reside.

This 2 Host ESXi Cluster i have especially provided for Microsoft failover clustering VMs.

Some of my MSCS run as CAB (with RDM) and one as CIB (with vmdk). Further i have DRS affinity and non affinity rules defined.

Now my questions:

Depending on the MSCS as Cluster in a Box (CIB) Scenario i got two VMs on one ESXi Host.

What happens if this ESXi Host fails, which ist hosting the CIB VMs? (Remember i got a second ESXi Host!).

If the ESXi Host1 fails, the MSCS CIB VMs will also fail, this is clear, but will the CIB VMs start on the second remaining ESXi Host2 automaticly or not?

I hope someone can easily answer this question for me, i can only suppose it is so and would be happy if anyone can confirm.

THX in advance

nicole

Hello!!

I am testing vMotion using a single evaluation license of ESXi 55.  I have an ESXi01 host and adding a second host ESXi02 using the same license.  WHen adding the host, I receive the following error.

Datastore 'Local-esxi01 conflicts with an existing datastore in the datacenter that has the same

URL (ds:///vmfs/volumes/20394203842098340sf0), but is backed by different physical storage

Question:  DO I need an another evaluation and the reinstall the ESXi02 hosts and

then add it to the datastore?

Thanks

How to Add a second ESXi02 host to an existing NFS datastore used by ESXi01?

I am trying to setup vMotion between ESXi01 and ESXi02 in a nested VMWare 55 running in VMWare workstation 9.  Everything works great so far.  I want to have ESXi02 share the NFS datastore that ESXi01 is using.

Hi Folks,

I'm working to get the VMware iSCSI software initiator to transmit IOs larger than 128KB.  I've tried increasing the MaxRecvDataSegment, FirstBurstLength and MaxBurstLength values for the software initiator ... with no success.  Is there a way to increase the max IO size?

Thanks,

Two nics after migrating VM to new host

$

after migrating a vm to a new host, with a different Vswitch, I have two nics now.

one is the old 20-net and now the new 20net.

if I remove the nic from the devices tab it still shows the old 20-net under the summary page.

I was thinking of removing the hardware nic and then migrating back to the old host and restart the process but this time remove the original nic prior to remigration again.

migrating from 4 to esxi 5.1: VMtools + virtual HW update?

I migrated to ESXi 4.1 to ESXi 5.1 U2, but I need to know if it's requirements to update both VMware tools and virtual hardware for every virtual machines.

What advantages I can get from hw update ?

I think that vmware tools update can improve memory management by host and performance... but virtual hardare update !?!?
