How do I Recover a RDM on one of two VMs sharing an iSCSI LUN`? The RDM option is greyed out...

I've got a pair of VMs, running Oracle RAC.  These RAC nodes had been configured to share the same device using RDM in physical compatability mode.  We had an issue with storage and needed to storage vMotion from one vmfs file storage to another.  One node was successfully migrated with the RDM file intact.  On migrating the second, we selected convert to VMDK option, which broke our RAC cluster.

I'm trying to recover that original RDM mapping on the second failed node, but find that the RDM option is greyed out.  How do I do this?  I've looked at KB 1017704, which indicates "There are no available LUNs to be presented to an ESX/ESXi host. They may have already been committed to storing VMFS, or have already been mapped to other virtual machines as RDMs. "   How do I share that LUN again?

Your assistance would be appreciated.

backup virtual machine settings only

I'm using ESXi 5.5 and have a Windows 2012 Essentials server VM.  I'm using ShadowProtect to backup the Windows server, but would also like to backup the 'hardware' settings from ESXi...in case of a physical server failure/fire/etc.  I already have the server VM backed-up (ShadowProtect), but how can I make a backup of the hardware settings configured with ESXi (Memory, CPUs, Video Card, VMCI device, NIC configuration, etc.)? Is this possible within ESXi?...without paying for additional software such as Veeam?

Thanks for any help/direction!

ESXi 5.1 64 Logical processor not shows in windows 2008 R2 VM

Dear All,

We upgraded ESXi 5.0 to 5.1 for CPU allocating problem. Now in VM (windows 2008 R2) set to 4 socket and 16 core for 64 vCPU. We have hardware of 4 socket CPU and 4 core each and HT enabled, so that total 64 logical processors are there. But after above setting check in Windows 2008 R2 server, in task manager there is only 32 CPU usage history. Can anybody help how to configure / set in WIndows 2008 R2 shows 64 CPU usage history.

I want to change the default comunication ports 80 and 443 on my Esxi host.

I have tried:

vifs --server <hostname> --username <username> --get /host/proxy.xml<local_directory_path>/proxy.xml

But the host generates a 404 file proxy.xml not found error.

I'm running Version ESXi-5.1.0-799733-standard.

What am I missing? Has this functionality changed?

Virtual Machine Clone: @&!*@*@(msg.fileio.generic)Error

Hi,

We have a C# script cloning all our virtual machines to a backup store using PowerCLI (for .NET). We are using the latest 5.1 release of the PowerCLI client.

Setup: vCenter 5.1, one ESXi 5.1 node and one ESXi 4.1 node.

Guest machines are running a range of Windows 2003, Windows 2008 R2, Windows 2012, FreeBSD and Ubuntu.

When the script is making a clone, the process will run to 99% and then return the following error.

The error is also visible in the vSphere client "recent tasks" window.

A general system error occurred: @&!*@*@(msg.fileio.generic)Error

Any idea what this means?

Best regards,

Christopher de Haas

Reproducable PSOD on 5.1U1 and 5.5 with Windows 8.1 and Server 2012 R2 and E1000E NIC

Hello everybody,

I figured the last two weeks a strange, reproducable issue with following constellation:

Hardware (tested with both Servers)

HP ProLiant ML110G7, SmartArray P410, 1GB FBWC, RAID5, 32GB HP ECC RAM

HP ProLiant ML310e Gen8, SmartArray P222, 512MB FBWC, RAID1, 16GB HP ECC SmartMemory RAM

Hypervisor (tested vice-versa on both Servers)

ESXi 5.1U1 HP Custom Image VMware-ESXi-5.1.0-Update1-1065491-HP-5.50.26.iso

ESXi 5.5 HP Custom Image VMware-ESXi-5.5.0-1331820-HP-5.70.38-Sep2013.iso

When I install a Windows 8.1 or Server 2012 R2 (NOT Windows 8.0 or Server 2012 w/o R2) with the suggested NIC E1000E, and I have a little bit "heavy" Network-Traffic from/to Windows 2012 or Windows 2012R2 Servers, an PSOD occurs with "pf exception 14 in world 107417".

Unfortunally, I didn't made a dump or Print-Screen of the issue, but I can write you what I've done (or make a little bit of load and then wait until it crashes again...)

Example 1

Network-Installation of "Windows 8.1 Pro" or "Windows Server 2012 R2" from an Windows Deployment Service wich resides on Server 2012.

WDS Server is VM on same ESXi Host like the new VM. WDS boots, made Domain-Login for selecting the Images, started Copying --> PSOD.

Reproducable only with 8.1 or 2012 R2 with E1000E NIC

Example 2

Network-Installation of "Windows 8.1 Pro" or "Windows Server 2012 R2" from an Windows Deployment Service, resides on Server 2012.

WDS Server is VM on different ESXi Host like the new VM. WDS boots, made Domain-Login for the Images, Started Copying --> ALL OK.

Then installed on Host 2 (2 x Server 2012 R2 and 1 x Windows 8.1 Pro) everything for a Domain (AD, DNS, WDS, WSUS) and when I first want to download the Windows-Update from the new Windows 8.1 Machine --> PSOD again.

Example 3

Network-Installation of "Windows 8.1 Pro" or "Windows Server 2012 R2" from an Windows Deployment Service, resides on Server 2012 (VM).

WDS Server is VM on ESXi Host, WDS Installation on Physical PC, not VM.

WDS boots, made Domain-Login for the Images, Started Copying --> ALL OK, no PSD at all.

After discussing this issue with a collegue he said that he has similar Problems with bigger DL380 and Server 2012 R2 (wich were unavaiable a couple of pings) and he told me that he loaded VMXNET3 Driver.

I've done this too and until now, no new PSOD was here.

But the silly thing is that VMXNET3 is unable to install via WDS, so therefore I have to install my Test-Machines the "old" way with mounting ISOs.

My question to you - had anybody else this issue or am I maybe the only one?

TIA - Josip.

Failed to register the device pciPassthru0 for 11:0.0 due to unavailable hardware or software support

Hello =)

I have an huge problem with my ESXi 5.5 Host (HP Image) on a ProLiant DL385p.

I'm unable to passthrough our PCI device (HP H221 Host Bus Adapter) to my VM guest.

Error is: Failed to register the device pciPassthru0 for 11:0.0 due to unavailable hardware or software support

I installed the actual driver for this device via SSH but problem is still remaining. Any ideas how to fix this, or is this working as intended?

Currently a Tape Drive is connected to the HBA. I know its not a clean solution, but it should work, I guess.

What can I try to solve this problem?

Thanks in advance.

Move vCenter SQL Express database to stand alone SQL

Hello, I have found several articles on moving from sql express to Sql full but I have a few questions. Some of the articles I came across are: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1028601 Now, one question I have is, the article mentions restoring the vcenter DB but how about the RAS db(Single Sign-on) and the update manager DB, do they all need to move over to the new Remote server as well following the same directions? I'm pretty sure they do but I was wondering if any special steps or order of restoration is important. Thank You

Disk indexing - Drive only or subfiles and folders

$

I was reading a couple template creation guides on Server and Desktop windows OS.  Some say to only disable indexing on the drive only and some others say to disabling indexing on both the drive, subfiles and folders.  If I plan to install apps onto the root drive (C:\) should I disable indexing only on the drive or the subfiles and folders as well?

Can Virtual Center and Update Manager databases be renamed?

I have my Virtual Center and Update Manager databases stored on a SQL 2008 R2 server, below is a screenshot. I had server virtualization going long before desktop virtualization and would like to align my naming scheme now. I would like to:

  • Rename vcenter to vc1
  • Rename update manager to vc1_update_manager

Can this be done? These two databases are associated with my virtualized server. The VC2 ones are associated with VMware View but I do not need to rename them. We are running ESXi 5.1 Update 2

RAID 10 Upgrade - Parity Check In Progress Warning

Hi,

I upgraded a Dell PowerEdge R510 (PERC 6/i RAID Controller) internal Datastore to RAID 10 (8x2TB SAS) this past Sunday and VMware's Health Status is still showing "Parity Check In Progress - Assert" Warning. Additionally, it appears all the drives LED status (synchronized blinking) indicate the same results. Any clues if there's a problem or how long this should take? It been in this state for 3 days now.

Dell R900, ESXi 5, RAID10 - Parity check in progress?

Hi Guys,

I'm just in the process of setting up  the above and created a fresh RAID10 array on the server consisting of 4x 2TB hard disks. However, when I view the server health status I get yellow triangles next to each of the disks saying:

Disk Drive Bay 1 Drive x: Parity check in progress - Assert (Warning)

I didn't think that RAID10 stored parity?

The drive performance does seem somewhat low though as I'm only getting 50mb/s transfer in a VM (win 2k8, copy of 3gb file to same disk) which is about half of what I was getting for one of the hard disks not raid'ed on a direct win2k8 install!

Copy a Virtual from One ESXi 5 Server to Another

I have a couple of virtuals running on an ESXi 5 server. The hard drives may be failing on this server. Thus I want to copy the virtuals another ESXi server.

It seems to me that the Standalone Converter *moves* virtuals, right? I'd like to copy the virtuals if I can. That gives me an extra copy to go back to "just in case."

The standalone converter is pretty slow. Someone told me that the fact that is uses HTTPS may be the reason.

What the simplest quickest way to copy one virtual from one server to another without causing any problems for servers or workstations that are domain members? I don't want to confuse my domain controller by having a member server or computer change its GUID (I think).

Thanks much.

cannot use template in vSphere client 5.1

We have mixed version of exsi hosts, some is verion4.1 some is 5.1 with different update numbers. I created a template --Windows Server 2008 R2 but I cannot deploy it. Always get compatibility error. Does a template not work with different version of hosts cross datastores?

Passthrough Nvidia graphics card to VM

Hi all,

I'm trying to passthrough a NVidia Geforce GT 610 to a Win7 VM but end up with the Device Manager showing error Code 43:

vm_gt610_passthrough_error43.jpg

What I've done/tried so far:

  • Installed VMware Tools
  • Installed recent NVidia drivers
  • Reduced memory from 4 to 2 gigs
  • Set pciPassthru0.msiEnabled = "FALSE" and pciPassthru1.msiEnabled = "FALSE"
  • Set pciHole.start = "2048"
  • Re-installed Operating System (Windows 7, 64 bit) while PCI passthrough being enabled
  • Upgraded VM hardware version to 9

The only hint that might indicate an issue is in vmware.log:

2014-02-01T13:29:35.220Z| vcpu-0| I120: PCIPassthru: Attempted to program PCI cacheline size 32 not a power of 2 factor of original physical 64 for device 06:00.0

2014-02-01T13:29:35.220Z| vcpu-0| I120: PCIPassthru: Attempted to program PCI cacheline size 32 not a power of 2 factor of original physical 64 for device 06:00.1

I was able to passthrough two other PCIe cards to two other VMs (one DVB-S2 card to a Linux VDR VM, one ISDN card to a Hylafax server VM). Both VMs run for about one year without issues so system hardware should be okay.

My hardware is an Intel S2600IP based server system running ESXi 5.1 Update 2.

Anybody having ideas or hints on how to continue troubleshooting?

Best regards,

Stephan

Hi,

How i can determine my cluster is FULL. ( 80% or 90% host utilisation is enough ?  how many percent  I should consider  as borderline and any VMware recommendation ?)

As i know i have to count a slot sizes.

Is there any other way to determine my cluster is FULL.

Is there any freeware tool available for it which can count it ?

Thanks in advance
