Before I shutdown a wwin2012 vm for template cloning, do I need to sysprep it before shutting it down or if I use customization template, I can regenerate a new sid which does the same. Do i need to do both or jus the cutomization spec is fine?
Hi, Excuse my lack of understanding. I am still very confused over best method to setup my Virtual Server an type of Disk Provisioning. I have read a lot but most "read me's" see to be based on larger "Enterprise" setups etc. There doesn't seem to be much on "Best Practices" for small business (Single Servers).
OS: SBS2011
Hardware: ML350G6 with 3X300GB SAS 10K drives (Raid 10)
Total available Disk Space: 600GB
Proposed Backup Location: ReadyNas Ultra2 with 1GB
I was thinking of
C:\100GB for OS, D:\100GB for Apps (Exchange) and E:\100Gb for Users Data
Should I be creating "One Single" Virtual Disk of 300GB and then Partioning within SBS2011
OR
Create "Multiple" Virtual Disks for each (C D & E)
ALSO. When I create the new VM what is to Best type of Provisioning to apply, Thin Thick etc?
Suggestions would be very welcome.
We're building ESXi 5.0 U2 hosts, and upon disabling maintenance mode, the HA agent is installed, and a firewall rule called 'vprobeserver' is created on some hosts. Google can't explain where this rule is coming from. It's causing issued with host profiles, as the rule doesn't appear on all the hosts. Any thoughts?
Hi,
I needed to change the IP address and VLAN of my ESXi host so I've used the DCUI to restore a standard switch.
Once back in vCenter I quickly migrated the vmk0 interface back onto my vDS but vmk1 (vMotion) isn't so simple.
Although the vmk1 interface still exists with the configuration (I can see this from the command line) I don't know if there's a command to add an existing vmk interface back onto a distributed switch.
It takes me 30 seconds to remove and re-create this from scratch but it's nicer and less error prone if someone could share the correct command to add this back.
Thanks

After applying ESXi500-201305401-BG on some IBM x3650 M2 & M3, ESXi 5.0 didn't boot anymore.
It seems the boot mode was automatically switched to UEFI mode.
IBM tip H197457 documents a fix.
Anyone else seen this ?
Shouldn't this be mentioned in the patch KB ?
Dear All,
My vCenter is having 4.1 installed, and I am using vSphere SDK 5.1, will VM creation will work or I need to down grade vSphere SDK 4.1 perl version.

Hello all,
I've got an apparently common problem but unfortunately the common solutions don't seem to apply. I have a VM that I migrated from ESXi 4 to 5.1 a year ago and have been using without a problem. Recently it has become necessary to increase the primary drive size from the original 60gb but the size options are greyed out. I have checked and there are no snapshot files nor are there any <0000>.vmdk files in the VM directory in the datastore. I even created a new snapshot then used the "Delete All" button to make sure all snapshots are gone but the size options are still greyed out. I tried upgrading the virtual hardware so in the VM Properties I see the version is vmx-09 which I understand is the most current version. The disk is a thick provisioned lazy zeroed drive which I thought might be part of the problem so I added a new thin provisioned disk and I can't increase the size of that one either. It seems to be limited to this virtual machine though as I have other VM's present on this server that I can increase the drive size with no problems although I haven't upgraded the virtual hardware for those so they're still at version 7 (I'm not sure if that matters).
So I'm absolutely positive there are no snapshots or snapshot files, I've upgraded the hardware to the latest available, and I'm pretty sure the disk type doesn't matter since it seems to apply to thick and thin provisioned disks. I'm out of ideas. Any help would be much appreciated!

Tim
Dear All,
I need to deploy VM from template, but i could not find any tool provided with vSphere SDK in Perl. If you have a script which does this task please share with me, any pointer will also help ...

Hi friends
I have a requirement of installing RHEL6 Guest OS on a RHEL6 Guest of ESXi5 Host. Is it possible to install or do you need to tweak something or the ESXi5 simply does not support it? I tried installing like that and it says that:
Error pooling connection 'qemu:///system': internal error Cannot find suitable emulator for x86_64.
It is possible in VMware workstation. there is an option in VM settings that: Virtualiza Inter VT-x/EPT or AMD-V/RVI
but i could not find it in ESXi5.
Any suggestion is highly grateful.
thanks
ESXI version is 5.0,the storage is EMC's CX-480.
A virtual machine to map a raw device partition, the virtual function can not be cloned or snapshot?
Thanks !
Trying to power on certain VMs (imported from Workstation) after this upgrade gives the following error:
An error was received from the ESX host while powering on VM Example VM.
Failed to start the virtual machine.
Module DevicePowerOn power on failed.
Could not set up "macAddress" for ethernet0.
Invalid MAC address specified.
00:0C:29:nn:nn:nn is not an allowed static Ethernet address. It conflicts with VMware reserved MACs.
(I've replaced the specific address with NNs.)
How do I override this? It is not possible to change the MAC address of the VM.
I have several Windiows Server 2008 R2 guests.
What is the best way to dimension and place the Windows page file?
For physical Windows Servers many people suggest to allocate a fixed size page file whose size is 1,5 times the RAM: does it make sense for hosted VMs as well?
Is there any best practice or guideline to refere to?

Hi everyone,
Hope you are all doing great! Hope you can help. I did some researches but I am still confused.
Currently, I just installed the freeware 5ESXi on a Dell server. One the VM Host, I installed 2 Windows 2008R vm servers with VM Tools installed, which one of them would be the domain controller. I would like to ask:
1.) How to configure the time setting for the Windows vm server? Right now, the "Syncronize guest time withhost" is unchecked (which is default).
2.) On the VM Host - Configuration - Time Configuration... what settings should I configure? Right now I checked to "Enable" the NTP client. In OPTIONS, which options should I pick (Start automatically... Start and stop with host.... Start and stop Manually...etc)?
3.) Related to #2, should I add the NTP source in the Options?
I am very concerned about the time on the vm server domain controller.... and hope you would help on this....
Thank you very much in advance on this.

we are having some issue in monitoring esxi 5 using Dell essential according to the article below there is a known issue but the workaround mention below only works at one time (it works few minutes after I restart the wsman then it will not be monitor again; and when I try to restart again it will not works at all)
is there someone experience these? please help.
Greetings! We would like to upgrade our finance server 2K3 to 2K8.
But that upgrade requires an upgrade from FRS to DFS.
Since this can cause issues we'd like to test it first on our new server in two VMs.
Our new server has ESXi 5 installed on it.
The 2K3 is on VMW4.
My question involves creating an image of the 2K3 in VMW4 and deploying that to an ESXi 5 VM.
Ultimately our new 2K8 finance server will reside on VMw5.
I guess an image is the way to go? If so any thoughts on what image software to use and the process or pitfalls.
I bought the "Mastering VMWare vSphere 5" but there is absolutely nothing about creating an image of a server in one VM and deploying it to another.
Thanks in advance
If I spin up a few local Exchange (2003,2007,2010) Mailbox servers on an ESXi5 host via vCenter can I add LUNs directly to the VM's using RDM? If so is it officially supported by VMware? Thanks
Hello everyone.
I currently have two Exchange servers, both with NIC's that sit on the same IP range. ("abc")
I need to add secondary NIC's to each server, but the IP's need to sit on a different VLAN than the existing boxes.("xyz") (Redundancy is the goal here.)
How do I present the "new" VLAN ("xyz") to our vSphere ESXi 5.0 environment so that it's an option when adding a standard switch, instead of only "None (0)" or "All (4095)?"
Thanks for the time.

Hi All,
I'm looking for a way to control or monitor the amount of zombie VMDKs that show up on our datastores. Currently, I manually check for them using RVTools about once a month and usually find about 30. It's a bit of a time consuming process double or triple checking that each one is actually unused then renaming (to be safe) then deleting from the datastore.
I'm assuming they exists due to some sort of bug in either svMotion (SRDS is enabled) or Veeam B&R which is used nightly on about 75VMs using hot add.
Is there a better way to monitor and manage zombie VMDKs? Or better yet, a way to prevent them from being created?
Kyle.
