ESXi NIC Auto-Negotiation

$

I have been using ESXi with Sophos UTM (home) for a firewall at home, but I keep hitting a snag with the network configuration. The LAN interface is an Intel EXPI9301CTBLK and has 1000Mb capabilities however, if I use the auto-negotiate setting it only runs at 100Mb and when I force it to use 1000Mb Full Duplex the LAN connection is lost. Switch is 1000Mb and if I live boot Mint it will run full speed. Has anyone else encountered this issue? Is there a specific driver I need to use? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks,

40GB Infiniband for backend SAN to ESXi 5.1 Blades

$

0

Hi all,

I'm writing today to discuss my proposed SAN and network design for an upcoming project.  I'm looking for any suggestions and info in regards to this design.  The key technologies that I hope to incorperatate are:

Mellanox 40GB Infiniband (ConnectX2/3 Infiniscale IV/SwitchX 2)

Windows Storage Spaces

Windows Scale-Out File Server Cluster

RDMA

The SAN is going to be a 3 node Scale-Out File Server using Windows Server 2012 Storage Spaces with a DataOn DNS-1640D JBOD appliance.  Below is a link to the general setup.  SSDs will be used for the disks.

http://www.dataonstorage.com/images/PDF/Solutions/DLS/DataON_Microsoft_Server_2012_Storage_Space_HA_Cluster_Shared_Storage_TechEd2012.pdf

We will be using LSI 9207-8e HBAs to attach to the DNS-1640D.  We are looking to use a 40GB RDMA solution to create the 3 node Scale-Out File Server Cluster.  From there we would need to connect the SAN Cluster to our Blade Servers using a 40GB Switch.  We are currently using Supermicro TwinBlades model SBI-7227R-T2.  Currently Sumermicro offers a 40GB 4x QDR switch for the blade enclosure model SBM-IBS-Q3616M.  It is based on the InfiniScale IV silicon.  The blades can use their Mezzanine cards model AOC-IBH-XQD based on the ConnectX-2 silicon.  The plan is to connect the Supermico blade enclosure switch to larger 40GB Mellanox switch to sit between the SAN and Blades.

The SAN Cluster will be all physical systems with no virtualization while our Blades all run VMware ESXi 5.1 with Windows Server 2012 VMs.  I am not sure if  RDMA can be achieved between physical to virtual environments such as our SAN Cluster to Blades.  I also don't know much about 40GB stuff in VMware.  I know that VMware is working on a Paravirtual RDMA based solution but I don't think it is available yet.  I believe you can use the Pass-Thu method to a VM or SR-IOV to assign functions to VM, but I don't know much about implementing either of these and Pass-Thu would not be an option for our environment.

We have been thinking of the SX6018 model switch form Mellanox to siit between the SAN and Blades.  As for the SAN adapters we were thinking of the MCX314A-BCBT or the MCX354A-FCBT.  I'm also not sure if these adapters and switch will work correctly with the Supermicro products as they are based on ConnectX-2 and InfiniScale IV instead of ConnectX3 and SwitchX-2 silicon.

If anyone has had any experience with Mellanox on VMware and or RDMA I would like to hear what they learned and what worked or didn't.  Any general suggestions and information that anyone has to share about my design or ideas would be great.  Also the SAN is not going to be used to store the VMs or VMDKs, it's just for other data that the VM guest OS's will access.

Thanks!

Chris

Which components are needed for an infiniband network for esxi 5.1?

$

I want to know, what components I need to build an esxi enviroment with infiniband components.

When two esxi 5.1 hosts are connect to a infinband switch (mellonoc or intel qlogic) , how is th infinband connect to an cisco switch or other Switch vendor. This means the ethernet switch most have uplinks for infiniband and for 10 or 40 Gigabit to the core switch (cisco), so that the workstaion can communicate to the servers. Allthough this means the switch which is connect to infiniband and ethernet translate the the protocols infiniband to ethernet and vice versa?

.

Is it possible to use infiniband over two location about 40 KM away?

Commands to run during vib installation

i am building a vib package. I have a requirement that apart from putting my files in the VMware Host, I need to check the configuration of the host and put some information in a config file. For that, during vib install, internally I need to run some "vmkfstools" command. How to do that? Is there any way to put some post installation commands/ script.sh to be run in the vib file?

Hi ,

I have 6 esxi 5.0 in one cluster. I created one data store on one of the host and then did rescan for vmfs volumes on other hosts in cluster.

but some how that data store is not visible to other hosts in cluster.

because of this reasonr i cant do vmotion of vms running on this host.

Please share your thoughts.

Hi,

I'm trying to install ESXi 5.1

burned the install image to CD and turned on

but after preparation, all I saw was the screen below.

enabled virtualization support in BIOS setting,

my CPU has VT-x to support ESXi (i remember installation guide haven't said abou VT-d)

I attach details of my system below.

I hope to find the reason helping me out.

Thanks.

Poor iSCSI performance when writing 32k+ size blocks

Hi all VM expert

I have a question that haunted me for long time in my home lab

I have setup two ESXi 5 box , version 5.0.0.914586, 1 installed with nexenta on a VM with RDM, the other just run typical windows VMs

Disks Performance is great when running VM on this nexenta box as shown in the following benchmark

nexentaBoxResult.jpg

However, on the second ESXi box tried to run the same test via iscsi, the result is terrible as shown below

runfromiSCSI.JPG

If you look at 16K blocks, it is still acceptable as it writes around 40MB/s,

However, it dramatically drops to 1215kb when trying to write 32K block?

Does anyone know why? Or tell me how to troubleshoot this issue

I suspect it is related to networking and attempted to several tricks to enhance performance

1) Setup LACP on my NetGear GS-108T 8 port switch,

2 Reconfigured my psp, using round robin settings

esxcli storage nmp psp roundrobin deviceconfig set --type="bytes" -B 10485760 -d naa.600144f09bfb06000000512447bc0002

Both didn't help

My network settings as follow:

iscsi_vnic.JPG

Multipathing settings

mutlipathing.JPG

Network statistics when running 32k block size test

Chart_result.JPG

It would be great if anyone could shed some light on this issue

Currently it takes like 45+ mintues to install windows 2008 R2, which is way too slow

Thanks

Kris

List of compatible motherboards? (desktop?)

All-

I was curious if there was a list somewhere of compatible motherboards.  I google search only came up with information on ESXi 4.

I'm currently using a dell poweredge 2950 but the cost of upgrading the RAM just 16GB is the same as me just building a desktop machine with 64GB of RAM.  Mainly using it for testing VMs etc....

Anyone have a link? Or does this not exist?

Thanks in advance!

Dell MD3220 and ALUA

Hi All,

We have new Dell MD3220, we're connecting via SAS with vSphere 5.1.  The firmware on the MD3220 is 07.84.44.60.

ESXi 5.1 should use the VMW_SATP_ALUA with this storage device, but I have checked and it is set as VMW_SATP_LSI.

I don't understand what is going on.  Can anybody tell me how I get this working correctly, or why it's set this way?

I upgraded to the latest vCenter and esxi5 update and now I cannot set automatic virtual machine startup and shutdown within the configuration in VC. The option is disabled and greyed out. I checked my cluster and all 3 host within the vcenter are greyed out. I can however logon the host directly and the option is enabled and not greyed out.  how can I fix this issue? it is not the permission issue as I logon with the highest permission in vCenter.

PSOD on Dell R515 BIOS 2.0.2 - ESXi 5.0 Updatetd

Hi,

today i had a Purple Screen on a new Dell R515 with the latest BIOS (2.0.2).

We bought 2 of these machines in 2012 with BIOS 1.10.0 and had no problems.

Yesterday i installed 2 additional R515 with BIOS 2.0.2 (installed in factory) and one of the two crashed last night.

Are there BIOS settings which i should disable?

Like DMA Virtualization ?

C1E ?

Power Settings to High Performance in BIOS instead of OS-Control?

On one of the new machines i try to downgrade the BIOS an firmware to the versions of the first 2 machines and will test it.

SQL Server 2012 and NUMA - Practical implications

$

Hi,

I've been reading up on SQL Server and NUMA, with ESXi 5.1 in mind. I've read that I should be using the same NUMA architecture on hosts - does this mean in practice I should be using the same type, speed, etc of RAM on my hosts? I'm trying to find out if my HP servers have the same NUMA architecture, but so far I haven't been able to find much information on it.

I'm thinking of just buying identical hardware to ensure I get it right.

Thanks

ESXi 5.1 PXE install problems -- system reboots

Despite the apparent ease described in official docs regarding ESXi 5.1 PXE installation (and indeed, the actual ease with which v4.1 was setup), I have not managed to successfully boot the ESXi v5.1 installer via PXE.  Using the "-c boot.cfg" paramenter with mboot.c32 refused to boot at all for me, but I was able to load the kernel and modules by listing them explicitly in the PXE config file.

I use pxelinux on CentOS 5.9, pxelinux.cfg/default has an entry like this:

A booting system loads the modules correctly, as expected.  But as soon as it has finished loading the last module, the system immediately reboots.  Any amount of fiddling I have tried has failed to yield any change.  There is nothing obvious to suggest what the problem might be, no errors appear onscreen

I used the files from VMware-VMvisor-Installer-5.1.0-799733.x86_64.iso

Any similar results from others?  Any tips from anyone who did get this working?  Any random thoughts to narrow down a cause?

Multipathing issue using multiple subnets and Nimble arrays

$

0

We have a requirement to use multiple subnets for multipathing because we also use XenServer. This is the first time we setup multipathing like this and may be missing a step.

Our host use two physical nics for iscsi traffic connected to 2 switches stacked. We typically bind a kernel port to each vmnic for multipathing. This time I have setup each pnic on its own vswitch and binded to a kernel port with iscsi enabled. The array has 5 nics and I set two ports on one subnet and 3 on the other. The Nimble has a "discovery" ip that is virtual which is what we use for dynamic discovery. The switches are setup with their vlans respectively with routing disabled. I can vmkping all ip’s with no problem.

When I rescan the adapter or refresh the storage I only see 3 paths. When I look at the network config on the iscsi software adaptor, it shows the path status as “Not Used” for the vmk port in question.

ESxi 5.1 Setup with vcenter 5.1 Enterprise
ISCSI MPIO and Round Robing enabled on both ESXi servers verifed and tested according to Vmware best practices and using the same subnet.
And for network design.

Here comes the question/issues.

Nr 1.

SSD in the above environment does not work, the white paper says that you should have about 512 GB for 8 GB of RAM in the nas but the manual in DSM says 16 GB I have verifed with support that it is wrong in the DSM help file and it should be 8 GB, that answer took 7 days to get.
Using SSD with above environment will actually slow down your trafic, Synology can not confirm if SSD is working or not, today they are turned off in my system.
My SSD disks are whitelisted for the NAS
Question has anyone here in this forum verified that they have functional SSD disks with cache with above configuration or that SSD disks for with ISCSI data and datastores using vmfs5.

Nr 2.

MPIO and Round Robin with ISCSI with four dedicated card connected to the NAS that has four dedicated cards.
This is the correct way to setup for ISCSI trafic, you should not use link aggregation as support suggested because you will loose both MPIO and RR functions.

I see very bad speeds here, every datastream initiated should start on each card and and therotically give you speeds up to 125 MB per card times four.
This does not happen at all, max speed is always 125 MB even if other datastreams are started for the ESXi system.
Has anyone here verifed MPIO and RR with ISCSI and seen the correct speedsm any suggestions are welcome, Synology points me to the wiki which is wrong and useless for my above configuration for the moment.
Can anyone verify that MPIO actually works with Synology and can see lan speeds that should be at least around 300 too 400 MB for this kind of trafic.

Nr 3.

VAAI support and thin Provisioning of disks.
DSM 4.2 forces you to use Thin Provisoned disks to be able to use VAAI support, in my case I have to turn this off per Lun the reason for this is when doing backups of Thinproviosen disk in the Nas it will increase the backup time with 80 procent due to the fact it has to inflate and deflate the disk, so this function almost doubles backup time.
This has been verified withh both Veeam and Vmprotect8

Can anyone verify better speeds with VAAI turned on Synology, I know that formatting volumes will work instead for an hour it took 2 minutes, but I can not verify anything more.

PS..

I have tried Jumbo Frames.

Any way thanks for reading this.

If you have any suggestions that would create faster ISCSi operations and MPIO thoughput plz add the information here, or any tweaks.

Sincerely Cabaj
