ESXi 5.0 host dropping off network

Sorry if this has been answered before, I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to this.

I've got a SunFire x4450 server that I'm setting up with several VMs for a class to be taught in the upcoming semester.  I've had no real issues setting things up, and it all seems to work swimmingly, until I disconnect from ESXi.  After around 10-15 minutes, I lose all network access to the host.  I can't SSH in, I can't use the VSphere client to log in.  Pings are unresponsive.

I can go to the physical console and test the management network, and it will fail on the first IP, but will then respond with the other IP addresses, and subsequent tests show all IPs as responsive, and I can log in again via SSH or VSphere Client.

Oddly enough, so long as I maintain a connection between the host, either through SSH or VSphere Client, it never becomes unresponsive.  Now, I also have a laptop that I used as a test run as well, and it had the same problem, which leads me to believe it's something to do with the network here, but I'm not entirely sure what I need to change to make things work properly.  I also don't have any access to make changes to the network configuration, so that's a no-go.

If anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them.  I'm probably just doing something stupid, but for the life of me I haven't been able to figure it out.

Thanks!
