Can you use thin provision deployment if size on disk for thick provision exceeds datastore?

I'm well aware of the issue regarding thin provisioning and oversubscription, but what about the following hypothetical scenario:

- I want to deploy a VMware image, with a thin provision footprint of 20GB

- If I were to deploy this same VMware image using thick provision, it'd be 1 TB

- The datastore I want to use has a capacity of 500 GB

I can't seem to find this so far in ESXi 5.0's documentation.  I'm assuming a user could do the above and set alarms to trigger when the datastore capacity was being reached?  If this is the case, where in the documentation can I find this?
