Hello everyone,
I am a network engineer and have used vmware workstation since the GSX days but not a lot of hands on with ESX(i). I just started a new job and now I have to manage a ESXi 5.0 install that I did not set up and of course the person that set it up is not longer with the company. So I have some dumb questions to ask that can maybe get me pointed in the right direction. My environment has only one host server running ESXi 5.0 update 1 on a DELL server. The admin that set it up created a guest OS running Win2k8R2 and installed vCenter into that VM. So my vCenter server is a VM on the only host that I have. My questions...Is it OK to do that? Do other people do that? Can I use Update Manager to update a Host (The only host I have) from a Guest on that Host? Or am I screwed?
Second question. This department has like no cash and is not backing up this machine. I know of all the great third party backup apps out there that work great but cost a bunch of cash (I know because I've worked for them in the past). I know that in the ESX 3.5 and 4.0 days there was VCB that people would use to back up their VMDKs. Is there there still VCB in ESXi5.0? If not did something replace it? Any documentation or tip or tricks anyone could point me to about that?
Thank you. Any help or pointing me in the proper direction would be great. I'm sure I'm not the only one that has gone down this road. My problem is that my questions are so simple that I cannot find answers to them searching on my own.
Thanks!
