vCenter for ESXi 5.0

Hi. Not sure if this is the correct place for this question, but...

vCenter Server: Whether as a physical install or as a virtual install...

If vUM is installed on a separate (or even the same) pysical/virtual machine as vCenter, would updating vCenter Server cause it to reboot, unleashing chaos within the data lab?

I'm thinking that if it's a physical install (both vCS and vUM on the same machine), there wouldn't be any issue, but if both are virtualized on the same ESXi server, there could be?

What if they're both on different physical or virtual machines? Would this scenario change?

I'd just like to create a (more or less) bulltproof install in the lab so "if" updates do occur, it won't take out the managed infrastructure.

Thx in advance for any help.
