ESXi 5 and the traditional run-level(s) used by most unix-like systems

Hi. Typical unix (like) envs generally set an initdefault state in /etc/inittab (along with labels for "other" run levels).

The ESXi 5 inittab file?

So, question(s): There is a "maintenance mode" run level/state for ESXi 5. Does it equate to the maintenance (single-user) mode for traditional unix systems? Maintnance mode can be entered via the vSphere Client after shutting down the VMs. Since it doesn't appear to be handled explicitly in inittab, what file/mechanism handles this?

Thx.
