All,
I've got a Windows 2008 SP2 64bit VM with SQL 2005 SP1 that I'm going to upgrade from 2 virtual CPU/12GB RAM to 4 virtual CPU/20GB RAM. Because of the change in hardware, I would like to backup the server before I do it.
Is the snapshot feature a good backup method for this? In the past i would create a clone of the server, but is the snapshot more efficient for this? My concern is when you update core hardware in a Windows machine, sometimes the server doesn't survive the upgrade. I NEED to be able to restore this server in case Windows has issues after the upgrade. This is absolutely critiical. Is the snapshot feature good for this?
Environment:
(4) Dell host servers (2 quad-core Intel, 32GB RAM)
ESXi 5.0, vCenter, all hosts in one cluster
virtual machines have updated VMtools and upgraded hardware. (they were upgraded from vi 3.5)
Thanks
